There is no single best spark plug for every Dodge Dakota. The right plug depends on the truck’s model year and engine, and some applications—especially the 4.7L V8—require checking more than one gap specification. Match the plug to your exact vehicle using an application catalog or service information before buying; the available fitment data does not show that any particular aftermarket plug delivers more power or better fuel economy.
How to choose the correct spark plugs for a Dodge Dakota
Start with the Dakota’s model year and engine, then verify the application in a manufacturer catalog or service specification. Confirm the plug part number and gap for that exact vehicle rather than relying on a listing for a different year or assuming that engines in the same family share a plug.
- Identify the vehicle: confirm its model year and engine. Use the VIN or vehicle documentation if you are unsure which engine it has.
- Look up the exact application: check an application catalog such as Chrysler/Mopar’s spark-plug applications catalog or NGK’s 2019 OE Applications catalog and Buyer’s Guide. Match the complete year-and-engine entry.
- Confirm the specification: check the service information for the exact plug type and gap, including any applicable updates. Do not treat a gap listed for another year or engine as universal.
- Verify before checkout: compare the selected part with the catalog entry for the specific Dakota, not just a broad engine-family description.
What the application catalogs establish
The Chrysler/Mopar catalog provides a clear example of why year and engine both matter. Its 2001 Dakota listing specifies different plugs across engine applications:
| 2001 Dakota engine | Plug listed in the Chrysler/Mopar catalog |
|---|---|
| 2.5L | RC12ECC |
| 3.9L | RC12LC4 |
| 4.7L | RC12MCC4 |
| 5.2L | RC12LC4 |
| 5.9L | RC12LC4 |
These are catalog entries for the 2001 model year only; they are not an interchange guide for other Dakotas. NGK’s 2019 catalogs also list Dakota applications across engine families including the 3.7L, 3.9L, and 4.7L, but a brand catalog still needs to be matched to the exact vehicle entry.

Check the specified gap—especially on the 4.7L
A service-manual listing for the covered 2003 Dakota 3.9L, 4.7L, and 5.9L applications gives a spark-plug gap of 1.01 mm (0.040 in.). That figure applies to the specified applications on that service page; it should not be used as a Dakota-wide setting.
The 2009 Dakota 4.7L service procedure specifically notes that two different plug gaps are used and instructs technicians to check and adjust them with a gap gauge. A 2010 guide reproduction also reports distinct upper- and lower-bank specifications. For those engines, verify the exact service specification for the vehicle rather than assuming every plug takes the same setting. The relevant service sources are Operation CHARM’s 2003 gap specification, Operation CHARM’s 2009 4.7L installation procedure, and the 2010 Dakota owner-guide reproduction.

Install plugs without damaging the threads or electrodes
The 2009 4.7L service procedure gives these handling precautions for its application:
- Check and adjust the gap with a gauging tool as specified; do not assume one setting applies to all plugs.
- Do not drop plugs into the wells, because impact can damage the electrodes.
- Start each plug by hand to reduce the risk of cross-threading.
- Do not clean the plugs; the procedure also warns against cleaning them with a motorized wire-wheel brush.
Follow the service procedure for the exact Dakota application, including any torque or replacement instructions not covered here.

Do performance plugs make a Dakota more powerful?
The available fitment and service information does not establish a horsepower, fuel-economy, or longevity advantage for a particular brand or for copper, platinum, or iridium plugs across Dakota applications. Choose a plug that is specified for the exact year and engine; consider construction or price only among options the vehicle’s application catalog permits. Do not treat performance claims as a substitute for verified fitment.
