The WaterCar Panther is a purpose-built amphibious vehicle that drives on roads and propels itself through water with a dedicated jet drive. WaterCar launched it in 2013 after 14 years of development, but says Panther production has ended. Its Jeep-like looks can obscure how different it is from an ordinary vehicle adapted to float—and published specifications vary by build, so the records for a particular Panther matter more than a general spec sheet.
What is the WaterCar Panther?
The Panther was WaterCar’s first production amphibious vehicle: a vehicle designed from the outset for both road and marine use, rather than a conventional Jeep converted to float. WaterCar says it launched commercially in 2013 after 14 years of development. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s manufacturer record lists Watercar and Panther among WaterCar Inc.’s trade or brand names; that listing is not a production or safety rating.
WaterCar’s overview describes a chromoly-steel chassis, fiberglass hull and body, closed-cell flotation foam, hydraulic suspension, retractable wheels, a rear-mounted V6, a four-speed manual transmission and a dedicated jet drive. The combination of automotive and marine hardware is central to how the Panther operates.
WaterCar founder Dave March has described the challenge this way: “Anybody can build a car that floats. Getting it to plane and run with stability, efficiency, and reliability — that’s a whole different matter.”

How does the WaterCar Panther work?
On land, the original Panther’s engine sends power through a manual transmission to the rear wheels. For water travel, a transfer case redirects engine power to the dedicated jet drive. The wheels retract hydraulically after the vehicle enters the water.
WaterCar describes the transition as a sequence, not simply an automatic button press: the vehicle enters the water, the drivetrain configuration is changed for marine propulsion, and the wheels are raised. The controls and steps may differ between individual Panthers, particularly given the range of configurations. A prospective operator should learn the procedure for the exact vehicle and follow its documentation.

How fast does the WaterCar Panther go?
There is no single speed figure that applies to every Panther. WaterCar’s overview gives approximate launch-era figures of 80 mph on land and 44–45 mph on water for the original Panther, and says specifications vary. It also cites an approximately 3.7-liter Honda/Acura V6 producing about 305 hp and an approximate weight of 2,950 pounds. Treat these as representative figures, not guaranteed specifications for a particular vehicle.
A different WaterCar page describes a specifically listed 2018 Panther with a Chevrolet LS3 V8 rated at 430 hp and 425 lb-ft, four-wheel drive, an automatic transmission, and water speed up to 35 knots. That listing illustrates variation; its engine, transmission and speed figures should not be combined with the launch-era V6 figures as though they describe one build.

Can you still buy a WaterCar Panther?
WaterCar says Panther production has ended and identifies the WaterCar EV as its current vehicle. The EV is a separate model: WaterCar’s homepage lists claimed speeds of 35 mph on water and a land speed governed to 25 mph under Low-Speed Vehicle regulations. Those are EV figures, not Panther specifications.
WaterCar’s Panther page describes an individual 2018 vehicle listing. Listings and prices can change, and one example does not establish current market-wide availability or the value of other Panthers. Contact the seller or WaterCar to confirm whether a particular vehicle is still available, then verify its configuration and records before relying on any advertised specifications.

What should you check before buying a used WaterCar Panther?
Because a Panther combines road and marine systems, assess both. A specialist familiar with amphibious vehicles—or separate automotive and marine specialists where appropriate—can help evaluate systems that a routine road-car inspection may not cover.
- Engine and transmission: Confirm the installed engine, transmission type, condition, service history and whether the vehicle’s documentation matches its advertised configuration.
- Hull and body: Inspect the fiberglass hull and body for damage, repairs and signs of water intrusion.
- Jet drive: Have the marine propulsion system inspected and confirm its operation and maintenance history.
- Wheel retraction and hydraulics: Check the hydraulic system and verify that the wheels retract and deploy as intended.
- Flotation: Inspect the flotation system and its supporting documentation.
- Modifications and records: Review maintenance records, modifications, and available road and watercraft documents. Ask how any changes affect operation and service.
- Local requirements: Registration and operating rules depend on jurisdiction. Check with the relevant local motor-vehicle and watercraft authorities rather than assuming one set of rules applies everywhere.
What the Panther’s published history does—and does not—establish
WaterCar’s account supports the Panther’s 2013 commercial launch after 14 years of development, and its overview supplies representative launch-era specifications. The NHTSA manufacturer record shows an update date of 2024-03-01, but that is a record date, not evidence of Panther production or an endorsement of the vehicle.
