The Dodge Durango has three generations: 1998–2003, 2004–2009 and 2011–2026. There was no 2010 model year. The first two Durangos were truck-derived SUVs; the third-generation Durango returned for 2011 with a redesign and a more road-oriented layout. The latest model year covered by the cited current lineup information is 2026.
Dodge Durango generations at a glance
| Generation | Model years | What distinguishes it |
|---|---|---|
| First | 1998–2003 | Based on the Dodge Dakota, this truck-derived SUV was designed to accommodate a third row. |
| Second | 2004–2009 | A larger successor, with exterior and equipment revisions for 2007. |
| Third | 2011–2026* | Returned after a one-model-year gap, redesigned inside and out, and built around a different, more road-oriented layout. |
*The 2026 endpoint reflects the latest model-year lineup information cited here; it does not imply that the third generation ended in 2026.
First generation: 1998–2003
The first Durango was based on the Dodge Dakota and brought truck-derived construction to a three-row SUV. Dodge México’s history says the design made room for a third row. The generation ran for six model years, from 1998 through 2003.
Second generation: 2004–2009
The second-generation Durango was larger than its predecessor. Dodge México’s 2020 history describes it as seven inches longer, two inches wider and three inches taller. Those are manufacturer-published comparisons between the generations, not dimensions that apply to every trim or configuration.

Dodge’s account also identifies 2007 as a year for exterior revisions and equipment changes. The generation ended with the 2009 model year.
Third generation: 2011 onward
Dodge’s history dates the redesigned Durango’s return to 2011, describing it as completely redesigned inside and out. Stellantis product information specifies that it was introduced in 2010 for the 2011 model year. The distinction matters: there is no 2010 Durango model year.

The third generation changed the vehicle’s underlying character. Stellantis product information describes a longitudinal front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, with full-time all-wheel drive available. Dodge’s official catalog describes Durangos across their history as both body-on-frame and unibody, so construction should be checked by model year rather than assumed from the Durango name alone.
What is current for the 2026 model year?
Stellantis’ May 29, 2025 announcement lists the 2026 lineup as the Durango GT, HEMI-powered R/T and SRT Hellcat. It also names the R/T Blacktop Redline package, Tow N Go as a standalone option and refreshed R/T wheel choices. These are 2026-specific details, not a description of every third-generation model.

In that announcement, Stellantis lists 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque for the 2026 R/T, and 710 horsepower for the 2026 SRT Hellcat. It states that the 2026 R/T can tow up to 8,700 pounds when equipped with the available Tow N Go package. These are manufacturer figures tied to the named model year and configuration.
Dodge’s FAQ, crawled in October 2026, lists the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, 5.7-liter HEMI V8 and supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8 as currently available engine choices, while describing the 6.4-liter HEMI V8 as coming soon. That differs from the lineup emphasis in Stellantis’ 2025 announcement; consult the source and date for the specific availability claim rather than treating an engine list as fixed across the generation.

Choosing the right year for parts or accessories
A generation range is useful for understanding the vehicle’s history, but it does not establish that a part fits every vehicle in that range. Mopar’s catalog organizes Durango parts and accessories by model year. Select the exact year and check the trim and fitment details before ordering; verify with a year-specific brochure or specification sheet when a component’s compatibility is unclear.
