Introduced for the 1970 model year and offered again for 1971, it is best known for its C-shaped side stripes, Dude graphics and distinctive tailgate treatment. Secondary sources commonly estimate that Dodge sold or produced about 1,500–2,000 examples across the two years, but that is not a verified factory production count.
What was the Dodge D100 Dude?
The Dude was the D100 Sport Trim Package, an appearance-focused option applied to Dodge’s existing D100 pickup. The Dodge D Series reference places its release in August 1969, ahead of the 1970 model year, and says the package was available for the 1970 and 1971 model years. It did not define a new D Series generation. Dodge D Series reference
That distinction matters when assessing claims about the truck. The Dude’s identity came primarily from its graphics and exterior trim; the sources reviewed do not establish a unique engine or mechanical specification as part of the package.
How can you recognize a Dude?
Descriptions of the package identify a group of coordinated details rather than one conclusive badge. The most visible were black or white C-shaped decals along the body sides, ending in Dude lettering and a tilted cowboy-hat logo. The reference account also lists a Dodge Dude decal on the pickup box near the rear marker lamps, tail lamp bezel trim, and dog-dish hubcaps with trim rings. Dodge D Series reference Car and Driver

Check the tailgate
A reported clue is a flat tailgate carrying a Dodge decal, rather than the more familiar tailgate with embossed Dodge lettering. Dodgeforum and the Dodge D Series reference both describe this detail. It can help distinguish a truck that matches the package description, but it is not proof by itself that the truck left the factory as a Dude. Dodgeforum
Treat graphics as clues, not proof
Reproduction decals are available, so stripes and lettering can be added to a regular D100. The sources reviewed do not provide a complete authentication procedure or specify a single document that proves a particular truck’s original equipment. For a purchase or restoration, regard the graphics and trim as evidence to examine alongside the truck’s broader history and documentation—not as a standalone authenticity test. Dodgeforum

Which years was the Dude offered?
The reported run covers two model years: 1970 and 1971. The Dodge D Series reference says Dodge released the package in August 1969 and identifies those two model years as the only ones to receive it. The release date and model-year range are secondary-source accounts, rather than a factory document reproduced in the sources cited here. Dodge D Series reference
How rare is the Dodge D100 Dude?
The commonly repeated figure is roughly 1,500–2,000 trucks across the 1970 and 1971 model years. The Dodge D Series reference gives a range of 1,500 to 2,000; Dodgeforum says about 2,000 were sold; and Car and Driver describes the total as a couple of thousand. These are estimates from secondary automotive sources, not a confirmed factory tally or a year-by-year breakdown. Dodge D Series reference Dodgeforum Car and Driver

- 1/64 diecast replica manufactured by GreenLight Collectibles
- Diecast Metal Chassis, Rubber Tires and Select plastic components

- Measures approx. 3.25in L x 1.25in W x 1.25in H
- Adult Collectible, Recommended for ages 14+, intended for display only
That estimate supports calling the Dude uncommon, but it cannot establish how many survive today or how many were built in either individual model year. The sources cited here do not provide a primary Dodge production ledger or Dude-specific factory production record.
Was the Dude a performance package?
The available descriptions characterize the Dude as a styling package, not a special performance model. DodgeGarage discusses a 1970 D100 fitted with an optional 383 engine, but does not identify that truck as a Dude or say the engine was included in the Dude package. An optional engine on a D100 should not be presented as standard Dude equipment on that basis. DodgeGarage

- Tailgate: Is it the reported flat style with a Dodge decal, rather than embossed Dodge lettering?
- Provenance: Is there documentation or a credible ownership history supporting the claim? The cited sources do not establish a definitive authentication checklist.
- Mechanical claims: Is any claimed engine or equipment tied to the individual truck’s documentation, rather than assumed to be part of the Dude package?
