The 2023 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 is the more powerful, drag-focused final-edition Challenger—but “Hellcat” is a family of trims, not one fixed specification. On high-ethanol fuel, Dodge rated the Demon 170 at 1,025 hp and 945 lb-ft; on E10, it rated it at 900 hp and 810 lb-ft. For a clear comparison, use a specific Hellcat model: Dodge lists 797 hp for the 2023 Hellcat Redeye, while Super Stock and Jailbreak models were rated at 807 hp.
How the Demon 170 compares with the Hellcat family
The Demon 170 and Hellcat share the Challenger’s supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8 lineage, but the Demon 170 was engineered as a limited, drag-focused send-off. Its output varies with fuel ethanol content, and its factory equipment is oriented toward launching and quarter-mile performance. “Hellcat,” by contrast, covers multiple 2023 trims with different outputs.
| Model or trim | Published power and torque | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 Challenger SRT Demon 170 | 1,025 hp and 945 lb-ft on high-ethanol fuel; 900 hp and 810 lb-ft on E10 | Fuel-sensor-based output and factory drag-focused hardware |
| 2023 Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye | 797 hp; 707 lb-ft | High-output Hellcat variant |
| 2023 Challenger SRT Hellcat Super Stock | 807 hp; 707 lb-ft | Distinct high-output trim within the Hellcat family |
| 2023 Challenger SRT Hellcat Jailbreak | 807 hp; 707 lb-ft | Distinct high-output trim within the Hellcat family |
Dodge’s 2023 lineup figures for the Hellcat Redeye, Super Stock and Jailbreak are listed on its 2023 Challenger performance page. The Demon 170 figures and equipment come from Dodge’s 2023 Demon 170 announcement. These figures are manufacturer specifications, not results from an independent back-to-back test.
Why the Demon 170’s horsepower depends on fuel
Dodge rated the Demon 170 at 1,025 hp at 6,500 rpm and 945 lb-ft at 4,200 rpm when running high-ethanol fuel. On E10, Dodge lists 900 hp and 810 lb-ft. A fuel-content sensor determines the output setting, so the 1,025-hp headline is not a rating that applies regardless of what is in the tank.

The 2023 Hellcat Redeye’s 797-hp rating makes it the closest listed Hellcat-family comparison in the supplied Dodge specifications, but it still trails the Demon 170’s high-ethanol rating by 228 hp. Compared with the 900-hp E10 rating, the difference is 103 hp. Those are comparisons of published ratings, not guarantees of a particular car’s measured output.
What Dodge claims about acceleration
Dodge’s 2023 announcement gives the Demon 170 a claimed 0–60 mph time of 1.66 seconds and peak acceleration of 2.004 g. It also cites an NHRA-certified quarter-mile time of 8.91 seconds at 151.17 mph. These are Dodge-published performance claims; they should not be read as independent test results or as a direct comparison with a Hellcat tested under the same conditions.

Dodge’s SRT overview lists a 0–60 mph time of 3.25 seconds for the 807-hp Super Stock, another indication that Hellcat-family performance varies by trim. That figure is also a published manufacturer claim, not an independent comparison test. See Dodge’s SRT overview.
Drag-focused hardware that sets the Demon 170 apart
The Demon 170’s advantage is not only its peak rating. Dodge specifies hardware and calibration aimed at drag-strip launches:

- Staggered drag-radial setup: Dodge lists Mickey Thompson P315/50R17 ET Street R rear drag radials and 245/55R18 front tires, with body flares for the arrangement. The rear tire is a specific Demon 170 application; verify fitment and tire specifications for the exact vehicle before buying or substituting tires.
- TransBrake 2.0: a launch-focused feature included in Dodge’s Demon 170 equipment description.
- Launch assist and drag-mode suspension calibration: additional systems Dodge identifies for drag-strip use.
- Eight-speed automatic: the Demon 170 uses the TorqueFlite 8HP90 eight-speed automatic, according to Dodge.
Dodge described the staggered drag-radial arrangement as a first for a factory-production car. The combination underscores the Demon 170’s specialized purpose; it does not by itself establish how the car will perform on a particular track, surface or tire condition.
Which one makes more sense for your use?
Choose the Demon 170 if
- You want the highest-output, most drag-focused version of the final Challenger lineup.
- You value the factory launch hardware and staggered drag-radial setup, and your intended use suits that specialization.
- You understand that its top published output depends on high-ethanol fuel.
Consider a Hellcat if
- You are comparing a particular trim—such as Redeye, Super Stock or Jailbreak—rather than treating “Hellcat” as one specification.
- You do not need the Demon 170’s specific drag-strip equipment or its high-ethanol headline rating.
- You are shopping used and want to evaluate a specific car’s condition, equipment and price rather than rely on its original list price.
There is no single answer for every Hellcat: identify the model year and trim, then compare the exact car’s specifications and condition with the Demon 170.

Original price, production plan and current availability
When Dodge announced the Demon 170 in 2023, it gave a U.S. MSRP of $96,666 before destination and fees and planned production of up to 3,300 cars: 3,000 for the United States and 300 for Canada, subject to capacity. Those are launch-era terms and a production plan, not current used-market pricing or a verified final production total.
Dodge states that Challenger production ended on December 31, 2023, on its Challenger model page. That confirms the end of production, but does not establish current resale prices or availability.
