Choose the Challenger if you specifically want a used two-door coupe and are prepared to evaluate an individual car’s age, trim, mileage, service history, and condition. Choose the Charger if you want a current Dodge with a four-door option, a new-car buying path, or access to the latest gasoline and electric powertrains. There is no single winner: Dodge ended Challenger production on December 31, 2023, while the Charger has moved into a new generation with coupe and sedan body styles. That makes this less a same-year shootout than a choice between a discontinued used-car family and a continuing model line.
Charger vs. Challenger at a glance
| Question | Dodge Challenger | Dodge Charger |
|---|---|---|
| Can you buy one new? | No. Production ended December 31, 2023. Dodge says certified used inventory is limited. | Yes, depending on model year, market, trim, and dealer availability. Dodge’s February 5, 2026 release said the current lineup was open for orders. |
| Body style | Two-door coupe only | Current generation offers a two-door coupe and a four-door sedan |
| Powertrains | Older gasoline engines and trim combinations vary by model year | Current 3.0-liter twin-turbo SIXPACK gasoline models and an all-electric Daytona; older Charger years use different engines |
| Best starting point | Enthusiast who wants a specific used car, classic coupe proportions, or a discontinued high-performance trim | Buyer who needs easier rear-seat access, wants a warranty and new-car process, or is considering current gasoline or electric performance |
| Evidence available for comparison | No single generation-wide output, economy, reliability, or value figure applies | Current Dodge claims include 420, 550, and 670 horsepower configurations; figures are trim-specific |
The first decision: discontinued coupe or current model line?
Challenger buyers are shopping the used market
Dodge states that Challenger production ended on December 31, 2023. The company directs shoppers toward used certified inventory and warns that availability is limited. Every Challenger purchase is therefore a vehicle-specific transaction: the model year, engine, transmission, drivetrain, mileage, accident history, modifications, maintenance records, and present condition matter more than the badge alone.

A late-model Challenger with a documented service history can be a very different ownership proposition from an older, heavily modified example. Do not use a general Challenger reputation to approve a particular listing. Obtain the vehicle history, verify the VIN and equipment, arrange an independent inspection, and compare several cars with similar mileage and specifications.

Charger buyers can consider a new car or a used predecessor
“Charger” now covers several distinct eras. Older cars include gasoline V6 and V8 configurations, while the current generation introduces 3.0-liter twin-turbo SIXPACK engines and the electric Daytona. Dodge’s 2026 release described two- and four-door versions, but exact model-year availability varies by market and can change as ordering windows open or close.

A used 2023 Charger and a new electric Daytona may share a name but have entirely different fuel, charging, service, and insurance considerations.
Body style and everyday usability
Pick the Challenger for a traditional two-door coupe layout
The Challenger is a two-door coupe. Access to the rear seats requires folding a front seat, and frequent passengers will notice that compromise. The coupe format can still be the right answer if rear-seat use is occasional and the car’s proportions, seating position, and discontinued status are central to the appeal.
Because production has ended, body style is not something you can configure on a new order. You select from what exists in the used market, so inspect door alignment, weather seals, seat mechanisms, glass, and interior wear rather than assuming low mileage means perfect condition.

Pick a four-door Charger when passenger access matters
The current Charger is not limited to the traditional four-door interpretation. Dodge describes both a four-door sedan and a two-door coupe in the current generation. The sedan gives rear passengers their own doors and is the logical starting point for commuting, family use, or regular adult passengers.
The current two-door Charger preserves the coupe choice for buyers who prefer that shape but want a new-generation car. Do not assume that a four-door Charger is automatically roomier, more comfortable, or easier to load than every Challenger; exact rear-seat dimensions, cargo volume, and seat configurations were not established in the available material. Check the specific car in person.
Powertrains and performance: label the year and trim
Horsepower comparisons become misleading when they mix a 2023 high-output Charger with a current electric Daytona or an older Challenger. Always write down the model year, trim, engine, transmission, and drivetrain before comparing cars.

| Configuration | Published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 Charger SRT Redeye Jailbreak | 807 horsepower and 707 lb-ft of torque | Dodge’s figure for one high-output gasoline trim; it is not representative of every Charger |
| Current Charger SIXPACK R/T, standard output | 420 horsepower | Dodge-published current gasoline specification |
| Current Charger SIXPACK Scat Pack, high output | 550 horsepower | Dodge-published current gasoline specification |
| Current electric Charger Daytona Scat Pack | 670 horsepower | Dodge-published electric specification |
| Daytona Scat Pack acceleration | 0–60 mph in 3.3 seconds; quarter-mile in 11.5 seconds | Figures stated in Dodge’s 2027 Charger FAQ; conditions and independent verification are not supplied |
| Daytona Scat Pack range | More than 265 miles | Dodge’s 2027 FAQ wording; the excerpt does not identify an EPA certification basis, so verify the official rating for the exact vehicle |
Dodge’s 2023 Charger performance page also lists the supercharged 6.2-liter high-output Hellcat Redeye Jailbreak at 807 horsepower and 707 lb-ft. That number belongs to a particular discontinued-era trim, not to the current Charger lineup as a whole. Conversely, the 670-hp Daytona is an electric model and should not be compared with a gasoline car using horsepower alone.

Dodge’s February 5, 2026 release reported that MotorWeek selected the Charger for its 2026 Drivers’ Choice Best of Year and Best Sport Coupe awards. John Davis, MotorWeek’s creator and host, said in that release, “The Dodge Charger Daytona shows that being a BEV can actually enhance street-legal high performance, while still appealing to all the senses.” The statement and award provide context for the current Charger; they are not a same-condition Charger-versus-Challenger test.
Which car fits your use case?
Choose the Challenger when the coupe itself is the point
- You want a two-door muscle coupe and do not need easy rear-seat access.
- You are comfortable buying used and evaluating one vehicle at a time.
- You have a preferred engine or special trim that is no longer produced.
- You accept that condition, modifications, and service records can outweigh the model name.
Choose a four-door Charger for regular passengers
- Adults or children use the rear seats frequently.
- You want a sedan layout without giving up a current Dodge performance model.
- You prefer the new-car ordering, warranty, and dealer-support process.
- You need to compare a gasoline car and an electric car based on your driving and charging situation.
Choose the current two-door Charger for a new coupe
- You want coupe styling but do not want to shop exclusively among discontinued cars.
- You are willing to verify local availability and the exact model-year specification.
- You want current SIXPACK gasoline or Daytona electric technology rather than a legacy HEMI-era configuration.
How to buy a used Challenger without overpaying for the badge
- Set the use case and budget. Decide whether the car is daily transportation, a weekend performance car, or a collector-oriented purchase. Reserve money for inspection, tires, brakes, fluids, registration, insurance, and immediate repairs.
- Define the specification before searching. Record the acceptable model years, engine, transmission, drivetrain, trim, mileage range, colors, and must-have equipment. This prevents an unusually powerful trim from distracting you from an unsuitable history or condition.
- Collect documentation. Request the VIN, title status, maintenance invoices, recall completion information, number of keys, and details of any engine, exhaust, suspension, software, or cosmetic modifications.
- Check the car cold. A cold start can reveal battery weakness, unusual valvetrain noise, smoke, warning lights, or rough running that may be hidden after the seller warms the engine.
- Inspect structure and wear. Look for inconsistent panel gaps, paint texture, overspray, underbody damage, uneven tire wear, leaking fluids, worn seat bolsters, damaged door seals, and evidence of track or drag-strip use.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Use a qualified technician who can scan the vehicle, inspect brakes and suspension, check cooling and driveline components, and distinguish factory equipment from aftermarket parts.
- Drive it under varied conditions. Test cold operation, low-speed maneuvering, highway cruising, braking, steering, transmission behavior, climate control, cameras, displays, and driver-assistance features. Stop the deal if warning messages remain or the seller will not permit a proper inspection.
- Verify parts fitment before purchase. Dodge directs owners to genuine Mopar parts, local Dodge dealer service, and Direct Connection factory performance parts. Confirm the model year and trim before ordering anything; a part that fits one Challenger configuration may not fit another.
How to evaluate a current Charger
For a gasoline SIXPACK Charger
- Confirm whether the car is the 420-hp standard-output R/T or 550-hp high-output Scat Pack configuration.
- Ask the dealer for the complete equipment list, drivetrain details, warranty terms, delivery date, and region-specific pricing.
- Compare the vehicle with used Challengers using the same criteria: purchase price, mileage, condition, insurance quote, expected fuel use, and service history.
- Do not assume the new engine’s output, sound, or maintenance requirements match older HEMI-powered cars.
For an electric Daytona
- Verify the exact trim and the official range rating for that model year. Dodge’s 2027 FAQ says the Daytona Scat Pack has more than 265 miles of range, but the quoted material does not identify an EPA certification basis.
- Check whether home charging is practical, including electrical capacity, installation cost, parking access, and permission for rented or shared housing.
- Plan public charging around commute length, road trips, weather, payload, speed, and charger reliability rather than relying on the headline range.
- Ask how battery, high-voltage, tire, brake, and software service are handled by the selling dealer.
Ownership, support, and the costs you must calculate locally
The available manufacturer material does not establish a reliable winner for purchase price, fuel economy, cargo volume, rear-seat dimensions, long-term reliability, insurance, or total running cost. Horsepower and door count cannot answer those questions. Build a comparison for the exact two vehicles you are considering.

For a used Challenger, Dodge’s support path includes genuine Mopar parts, Dodge dealer service, and Direct Connection factory performance parts. These categories can help keep a discontinued car maintainable, but availability and fitment are not guaranteed for every configuration. For a current Charger, confirm which services your local dealer can perform on the gasoline or electric version you choose.

Dodge’s Spanish-language Challenger FAQ asks, “¿QUÉ VEHÍCULO DODGE ES EL MÁS PARECIDO AL DODGE CHALLENGER?” (“Which Dodge vehicle is most similar to the Dodge Challenger?”) Its answer points performance-oriented drivers toward the Charger. That is Dodge’s product-positioning guidance, not evidence from an independent comparison.
A practical decision framework
- Need a new car? Start with the current Charger. A Challenger can only be purchased used.
- Need frequent rear-seat access? Start with the four-door Charger, then verify the actual interior in person.
- Want a two-door coupe above all else? Compare used Challengers with the current two-door Charger, labeling every model year and powertrain.
- Want legacy supercharged V8 character? Search specific used Challenger or older Charger trims and prioritize inspection, records, and condition over headline output.
- Want current maximum published output? Compare the 550-hp gasoline Charger Scat Pack and 670-hp electric Daytona Scat Pack on drivetrain, charging or fueling, performance figures, and total ownership requirements—not horsepower alone.
- Still undecided? Drive one representative car from each category, obtain local insurance and energy estimates, and compare written offers or documented vehicle histories side by side.
Bottom line for 2026 shoppers
The Challenger is the choice for a buyer who wants that discontinued two-door coupe and is willing to find, inspect, and maintain a particular used example. The Charger is the more flexible starting point for new-car shoppers: it remains a current line, offers two- and four-door forms, and spans gasoline SIXPACK and electric Daytona powertrains. Treat “Charger” as a name used across multiple generations, and make every comparison with the exact year, trim, engine, drivetrain, mileage, and condition in view.
