There is no universal answer. How long a speed camera ticket takes to arrive depends on the country, the state or province, and the specific camera program that recorded the vehicle. Published rules in different places set different clocks: some require a citation to be mailed within a fixed number of business days, some start the clock only after the registered owner is identified, and some describe a general expectation of contact rather than a legal deadline. In the examples below, the time between the violation and the first letter ranges from about two weeks to roughly two months, and the first letter is not always the penalty itself.
A camera flash, or even a flash you are fairly sure was caught on a speed camera, does not by itself mean a citation will follow. Many programs review the images and recorded data before deciding whether to issue anything.
Why no single timeline applies
Speed cameras are run under local, state or provincial, and in some countries national law, and each program sets its own procedure for identifying the vehicle, reviewing the evidence and notifying the owner or driver. A deadline that governs a municipal camera in one city may have no bearing on a work-zone camera on a state highway a few miles away. The timeline you care about is therefore the one written for the exact program that photographed your vehicle, not a general national figure.
Three factors shape nearly every timeline:
- The trigger date. Some rules count from the date of the alleged violation. Others count from the date the registered owner is identified or the owner’s address is confirmed, which can push the mailing date later.
- The type of first document. A first letter may be a citation, a notice that a prosecution is being considered, or a request asking the owner to identify who was driving.
- The kind of deadline stated. A statute may set a legal maximum for mailing. A police or agency page may describe only what people can usually expect.
Published timelines by jurisdiction
The examples below come from official government and agency sources. They illustrate how the rules differ; they are not a forecast for any other location.

| Jurisdiction and program | What the official source states | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom (speeding enforcement) | Government guidance says that within 14 days of a car being caught speeding, the registered keeper will be sent a Notice of Intended Prosecution and a Section 172 notice. The Section 172 notice must be returned within 28 days. | The 14-day letter is an initial notice. A fixed penalty or court letter can follow only after the driver responds, so the 14 days does not measure when the matter ends. |
| Oregon (qualifying speed-camera citations under ORS 810.437) | The citation must be mailed within 10 business days of the alleged violation. The registered owner has 30 days from delivery to respond. | This applies to qualifying citations under that statute. It should not be assumed to cover every photo or automated enforcement program in the state. |
| Connecticut, work-zone speed cameras | A citation is mailed within 30 days of the violation or 30 days after the registered owner is identified, whichever is later. Out-of-state vehicles are handled within 30 days after owner identification. | Owner identification can extend the period, so the mailing date may fall well after the event. |
| Connecticut, municipal automated enforcement | Mailing is due no later than 30 days after the owner’s address is confirmed. A citation is invalid unless it is mailed within 60 days after the alleged violation. | This is a separate program with its own rules. Its 60-day outer limit should not be merged with the work-zone rule. |
| Norway (automatic speed enforcement) | The police state that processing times may vary, but the owner or driver can generally expect to be contacted within three weeks of the incident. The owner may receive a notification letter, while a fixed penalty goes to the identified driver. | This is a general expectation, not a statutory guarantee. |
United Kingdom: the first letter is not the final penalty
UK Government guidance on speeding penalties states: “Within 14 days of your car being caught speeding you’ll be sent a:” and then lists a Notice of Intended Prosecution and a Section 172 notice. The Section 172 notice asks the registered keeper to say who was driving. Only after that response can the process move toward a fixed penalty or a court letter. Readers who receive the 14-day letter should therefore expect a request for information first, not a penalty.
Connecticut: two different clocks
Connecticut publishes separate FAQs for its two camera programs, and they use different triggers. The Department of Transportation’s work-zone FAQ states: “A citation will be mailed to the registered owner of a vehicle photographed by speed safety cameras within 30 days of committing the violation or 30 days after the registered owner of the vehicle is identified, whichever is later.” Because the later date controls, a notice can arrive well after the drive itself. The municipal program FAQ instead ties the deadline to the confirmed address and sets an outer limit of 60 days from the violation, after which the citation is invalid.

Norway: an expectation, not a promise
The Norwegian Police, describing its automatic speed enforcement, say: “Processing times may vary, but the owner or driver of the vehicle can generally expect to be contacted within three weeks of the incident.” That wording gives a typical window, but it does not create a legal right to a letter within three weeks, and delays do happen.
A flash is not the same as a citation
A flash may be the start of a review, not the start of a penalty. Some programs check the captured image, the recorded speed and the vehicle details before anything is mailed. If the reviewer rejects the event, nothing further may happen. For that reason, the absence of a letter a few days after a flash is not, on its own, evidence that you were cleared, and the arrival of a letter weeks later is not unusual where the law allows it.

How to work out your own deadline
- Identify the exact location where the camera recorded the vehicle, and whether the camera belongs to a city or county, a state or provincial work-zone program, or a national system.
- Find the official notice or the statute or FAQ for that exact program. Use the agency or police website that issued the camera program, not a general travel or summary page.
- Check what triggers the clock: the violation date, the owner’s identification, or confirmation of the owner’s address.
- Read the first document closely. Note whether it is a citation, a notice of intended prosecution, or a request to identify the driver.
- Find the response deadline printed on that document and count from the date the document says it applies, not from the date you think the event occurred.
The time the agency took to mail a letter and the time you have to respond are separate periods. A late-arriving letter can still carry a short response window, so do not wait for the next document before acting on the deadline shown.

Limits of these figures
- The UK, Oregon, Connecticut and Norway examples are drawn from the rules each government or agency has published. They are not a global average, and no single average for delivery time can be calculated from them.
- The Oregon rule applies to qualifying citations under ORS 810.437. Other camera programs in the state may operate under different provisions.
- Older federal guidance on automated enforcement describes that notice delivery varies between jurisdictions. Its examples are historical, so it is useful background but not a current deadline.
- This is general information, not a determination of any individual’s legal position. If you are facing a specific notice, the issuing agency or a qualified local adviser can confirm how the rules apply to your case.
