Yes—turn ordinary cruise control off when rain has left the road wet or slippery. Wet pavement reduces traction, and standing water can cause hydroplaning; keeping your foot ready to ease off the accelerator gives you a more immediate way to respond. Rain itself is not the only trigger: pay attention to the road, water, and visibility, and follow your vehicle’s manual for adaptive cruise control.
Why should you avoid cruise control on wet roads?
AAA advises drivers to avoid cruise control on slippery roads because traction can change quickly. If tires lose grip, you may need to reduce speed by lifting off the accelerator. AAA Exchange explains that this response “cannot be accomplished when cruise control is engaged,” and says driving without cruise control leaves the driver more options when responding to a potential loss of traction: AAA Exchange’s wet-weather driving tips.
Standing water raises the risk of hydroplaning, when a tire loses contact with the road over water. Speed, water depth, and tire condition all matter. AAA Exchange notes that even new tires can lose some road contact at speeds as low as 35 mph; treat that as a warning that good tires do not make it safe to maintain speed through water, not as a safe-speed threshold. AAA Exchange also reports that nearly 1.2 million traffic crashes each year involve wet pavement, though the page does not establish the underlying data year.
Should you use cruise control when driving in the rain?
For ordinary cruise control, switch it off when the pavement is wet or slippery. Choose a speed that fits the amount of water on the road and how far ahead you can see. Wet weather may require slowing down even when rain is light; standing water, slick pavement, or worsening visibility are clear reasons not to let cruise control hold your speed. AAA’s guidance is to avoid cruise control on slippery roads: AAA Automotive: Avoid Cruise Control On Slippery Roads.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration guidance says slick roads make it harder to control or stop a vehicle. Slow down and leave more following distance so you have extra room to react and stop: NHTSA: Driving in Severe Weather.
What should you do if rain makes driving unsafe?
- Reduce speed smoothly. Avoid sudden braking or steering, which can make it harder to maintain control on a slick surface.
- Leave more space. Increase the gap to the vehicle ahead to allow more room for a gradual stop.
- Do not drive into floodwater. Turn around rather than enter a flooded road. NHTSA advises drivers to turn around, not drown.
- Stop somewhere safe if visibility is too poor. If you cannot see well enough to drive safely, get off the road in a safe place and wait for conditions to improve. AAA Auto Club Group’s wet-weather guidance recommends waiting when visibility is too limited.
Does the advice change for adaptive cruise control?
Adaptive cruise control can respond to traffic ahead, unlike ordinary cruise control, which generally maintains a set speed. But that does not mean it is suitable for every wet-road situation. Systems and limitations differ by vehicle, so check the owner’s manual for your model and follow its restrictions.

For example, a Volvo owner manual document filed with NHTSA warns against using adaptive cruise control in demanding conditions that include slippery roads, substantial water or slush, heavy rain, and poor visibility. This is guidance for that vehicle, not a universal rule for every adaptive system: Volvo owner manual filed with NHTSA.

What should you check before driving in rain?
- Check that your tires are in suitable condition for the trip.
- Make sure your lights work so you can see and be seen.
- Check that the wipers clear the windshield; replace inserts that leave streaks. AAA Auto Club Group’s wet-weather guidance recommends checking wipers and replacing streaking inserts.
