Some junk yards make money, but the available U.S. benchmarks do not show that they typically make a lot of profit. BizBuySell reports average pre-tax net margins of 4% in 2020 and 6% in 2021 for junk and salvage yards. Those figures are dated benchmarks, not a current forecast, and revenue can be large while net profit remains a much smaller share.
What do junkyard profit figures show?
BizBuySell’s public U.S. junk and salvage yard benchmark reports the following averages for 2020 and 2021. Later-year figures on the page are obscured, so they cannot establish a current margin.
| Year | Average annual revenue | Average gross profit | Gross margin | Average pre-tax net profit | Net margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | $3,799,495 | $899,720 | 23.68% | $151,980 | 4.00% |
| 2021 | $3,588,479 | $861,953 | 24.02% | $215,309 | 6.00% |
These are BizBuySell’s published averages, not a census of every operating yard. Gross profit is before operating expenses; net profit is what remains after expenses, which is why the net margin is substantially lower than the gross margin. The figures show that substantial sales do not automatically translate into a large bottom line. BizBuySell’s benchmark page provides the reported figures.
How much does a junkyard owner make?
Sale listings offer a separate measure, not a direct answer about the typical owner’s take-home profit. For junk and salvage yards reported sold from 2021 through 2025, BizBuySell reports median revenue of $1,141,763 and median owner discretionary earnings of $251,000. Owner discretionary earnings is not the same as net profit, and the figures describe reported transactions rather than all yards in operation. They should not be treated as a universal margin or multiplied into a general earnings estimate. BizBuySell’s transaction data reports these medians.

How does a salvage yard make money?
A yard’s income can come from reusable parts and cores, scrap steel and other metals, and—in some self-service operations—an admission fee. It may buy vehicles from auctions, towing companies, the public, municipalities, insurers, or charitable organizations. After usable parts are removed or sold, the remaining vehicle can be sold to a scrap processor.
LKQ’s SEC filing describes its own self-service model: it removes batteries, fluids, refrigerants, catalytic converters, and hazardous materials before customers enter to pull parts, and generally holds vehicles for 30 to 120 days depending on capacity and demand. This is an example from a large operator, not a rule for independent yards. LKQ’s SEC filings describe its operations.

The business model affects costs as well as sales. Self-service can reduce the yard’s labor for removing parts, while full-service dismantling and sales require different labor and customer-service resources. In either case, results depend on the value recovered from each vehicle relative to what it costs to acquire, transport, process, store, and sell it.

- Vehicle supply and acquisition: Purchase price, availability, condition, and transport expense determine the cost and potential value of incoming inventory.
- Recovery and sales mix: Compare value from parts and cores with proceeds from metal and other scrap. A yard’s sales channels may include self-service, full-service dismantling, wholesale parts, and admission charges.
- Turnover and capacity: How quickly vehicles sell or are processed matters, as does whether the yard has room to store inventory without tying up too much capital.
- Operating expenses: Labor, equipment, insurance, utilities, taxes, and other overhead reduce the amount left after sales.
- Environmental and licensing obligations: Handling vehicles and hazardous materials carries requirements that vary by jurisdiction and can affect operating costs and practices.
Indiana’s Department of Environmental Management says competitive, profitable modern auto recycling requires more than crushing end-of-life vehicles: recyclers must recover market value while protecting the community from pollution. Its licensing and environmental guidance applies to Indiana; operators elsewhere should check requirements for their own state and locality. Indiana IDEM’s auto salvage recycling guidance explains the state’s approach.
