Subaru recommends replacing all four tires at the same time. Its 2025 Outback owner’s manual says the tires must match in key specifications and degree of wear; differences can risk serious drivetrain damage. The exact fitment rules depend on your Subaru’s year, model, and trim, so check its owner’s manual and driver-door tire placard before buying.
Why does Subaru recommend replacing all four tires?
Subaru’s 2025 Outback owner’s manual states: “For safe vehicle operation, SUBARU recommends replacing all four tires at the same time.” The same manual warns that mismatched tires can cause serious drivetrain damage and affect ride, handling, braking, and speedometer or odometer calibration. These are Subaru’s instructions for that vehicle; they should not be read as a universal rule for every all-wheel-drive car.

Subaru’s support guidance also recommends using the same tires originally fitted to the vehicle. If you choose a different brand, it strongly recommends matching the original size and style and consulting the owner’s manual. Subaru tire-maintenance guidance and the manual for your specific vehicle are the relevant starting points.

The 2025 Outback manual lists the following characteristics: size, speed symbol, load index, circumference, construction, manufacturer, brand and tread pattern, and degree of wear. It also says to follow the specifications on the vehicle’s tire placard. A tire that physically fits the wheel is not necessarily an appropriate match for the car.
#1 Best Overall
- Designed for use on passenger cars
- Backed by a 55,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life
- Specialized tread pattern provides solid handling and traction
- Optimized footprint promotes stability and reliable traction
- Circumferential grooves enhance wet handling and hydroplaning resistance by funneling water out of the tread
Find the placard on the driver’s door area and consult the owner’s manual for your exact year, model, and trim. Do not assume that another Subaru—or even another trim of the same model—uses the same specification. Subaru recommends using the original tire specification; its tire guidance advises consulting an authorized retailer if you are considering a change.
Can you replace just one or two tires?
Do not assume that a single new tire will work safely with three worn tires, or that replacing two is automatically acceptable. Subaru’s recommendation is to replace all four, and its matching criteria include both circumference and degree of wear. The official guidance cited here does not set a universal tread-depth difference or circumference tolerance for every Subaru.

If one tire is damaged, first have a tire professional determine whether it can be repaired safely. If replacement is necessary, ask a Subaru retailer or qualified tire professional to assess the remaining tires and confirm an appropriate option for your specific vehicle. They can measure the existing set and check it against the vehicle’s requirements. Do not rely on an assumed tread-depth cutoff or assume that shaving a replacement tire makes it suitable; the cited Subaru guidance does not establish those as universal solutions.
What should you do before buying replacement tires?
- Identify the exact vehicle. Note the model year, model, and trim; do not select tires from the Subaru name alone.
- Read the placard and owner’s manual. Confirm the required tire size and ratings, then check the manual’s tire-matching instructions.
- Ask for a fitment assessment. If you hope to replace fewer than four tires, have a Subaru retailer or qualified tire professional measure the existing tires and verify whether a suitable match is possible.
- Compare appropriate options only after confirming fitment. You can then weigh original-equipment specification, matching tread and circumference, tire type for your driving conditions, availability, and installed price.
What if the AWD warning light flashes?
An older, model-specific Subaru owner’s manual warns that the AWD warning light may flash if tires of different diameters are installed or if a tire is excessively underinflated. It also warns that continued driving with a flashing AWD light can lead to powertrain damage. Warning-light behavior and instructions can differ by model, so follow your own manual and have a flashing light investigated promptly rather than assuming the older manual applies to every Subaru.
