The likeliest context was an expanding crossover lineup that included the Corolla Cross and RAV4, but Toyota’s public announcements do not establish a specific reason or show that poor sales caused the decision. Toyota later brought the C-HR name back to the U.S. as an electric vehicle.
When did Toyota discontinue the C-HR in the U.S.?
The original C-HR’s final U.S. model year was 2022. MotorTrend reported at the time that Toyota would end C-HR sales in the United States and Canada after that model year, making it a five-model-year run in the U.S. MotorTrend’s contemporaneous report relayed Toyota’s announcement; no named company spokesperson was identified in the available report.

Toyota’s newsroom archive lists a 2022 C-HR entry and, later, 2026 and 2027 entries. The 2022 entry marks the end of the original run, not the permanent retirement of the name. Toyota’s C-HR newsroom archive tracks those model-year announcements.
Why did Toyota end the original C-HR?
The strongest explanation supported by the available announcements is lineup context: Toyota’s range of crossovers was growing, with the Corolla Cross and RAV4 positioned as alternatives to consider. That makes an overlap in the entry-crossover lineup a plausible strategic factor, but it is not a confirmed explanation from Toyota.
The Corolla Cross broadened Toyota’s entry-SUV range
In June 2022, Toyota announced a Corolla Cross Hybrid for the 2023 model year, expanding the choices available alongside the gasoline Corolla Cross. The company said the Corolla Cross would be assembled in Huntsville, Alabama, alongside its gasoline counterpart. Toyota’s Corolla Cross Hybrid announcement documents the product expansion, not a direct replacement decision for the C-HR.
The RAV4 was another lineup alternative
MotorTrend’s contemporaneous coverage discussed the Corolla Cross and RAV4 in the context of the C-HR’s departure. Toyota’s later sales release said the RAV4 had been the best-selling U.S. SUV for seven consecutive years and that Corolla Cross had its best-ever year in 2023. Those are useful signs of the models’ later market positions, but they were reported after the C-HR decision and do not prove what Toyota considered when it made it. Was the C-HR discontinued because it sold poorly?
The available public sources do not establish that. They do not provide an official explanation tying the decision to C-HR sales, profitability, cannibalization, or another specific business measure. Without evidence connecting one of those factors to Toyota’s decision, it would be misleading to state that poor sales were the cause.

Is the Toyota C-HR still discontinued?
Not as a name in Toyota’s current U.S. lineup. Toyota lists 2027 C-HR SE and XSE trims as battery-electric vehicles, a different powertrain and offering from the original gasoline C-HR. Toyota’s current U.S. C-HR listing shows the newer model. In short, the original gasoline C-HR ended after 2022; the C-HR name later returned as an EV.
