It tested whether changing men’s beliefs about relative penis size affected how desirable they said sports cars were. The result is about stated desire in an online experiment—not the bodies or buying habits of real drivers.
What the experiment tested
Richardson, Devlin, Hogan, and Thompson recruited 200 English-speaking men through Prolific for an online study presented as a task about remembering facts while shopping. Five participants were excluded for failing attention checks. The remaining participants were 18 to 74 years old, with a mean age of 28.4. The study received UCL ethics approval (UCL 3828/003). The research team’s project summary and the 2023 manuscript and supplementary materials describe the study.
In the key condition, participants were given false information that average erect penis size was either 18 cm or 10 cm. The researchers intended the 18 cm figure to make participants feel relatively smaller and the 10 cm figure to make them feel relatively larger. Participants then rated one of six sports cars for desirability. Their actual penis size was not measured, and the study did not track purchases or ownership.
What the researchers reported
Participants in the condition designed to make them feel relatively smaller gave higher sports-car ratings. The manuscript reports an overall maximum probability of effect (MPE) of 91%. MPE is the authors’ statistical summary; it is not the percentage of participants who wanted a car, nor a measure of how likely a real-world purchase would be.

The reported age pattern
For participants older than 30, the manuscript reports MPEs of 95–99% for a difference between the manipulated conditions. For participants aged through 29, the reported MPEs were below 90%, which the authors characterized as little evidence of an effect. These are age-group patterns in this experiment, not evidence that older sports-car owners have smaller penises.
Other luxury products
The researchers also tested other self-esteem manipulations alongside ratings of other luxury products. They report no evidence of an overall effect there (MPE 54%), with all age-specific MPEs below 85%. The sports-car result therefore should not be generalized to luxury consumption as a whole.

What the finding does—and does not—establish
- It supports a limited experimental claim: in this study, changing participants’ beliefs about relative penis size affected their stated desirability ratings for sports cars.
- It does not show an anatomy link: the researchers did not measure participants’ actual size or compare the anatomy of sports-car owners with other drivers.
- It does not establish buying behavior: rating a car as desirable is not the same as choosing, purchasing, or owning one.
- It does not diagnose an individual: no conclusion about a driver’s body can be drawn from the car they drive.
The authors summarized their experimental result this way: “We increased our male participants’ desire for sports cars when we made them feel they had a relatively small penis.” That statement refers to the manipulated belief and participants’ ratings—not measured anatomy or ownership.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the headline claim goes too far
The experiment offers a narrow piece of evidence about how one manipulated belief may influence stated desire in a particular online shopping task. It cannot substantiate the claim that sports-car owners have small penises. The study authors also identify open questions, including whether the effect extends to other highly prized products and whether similarly strong beliefs about intelligence or wealth would produce a comparable result.
