Do Small Cars Really Have More Fun? What the Audi S3 Proves (and Doesn’t)

The Audi S3 makes a strong case for compact performance: quick acceleration, quattro all-wheel drive and a rear torque splitter. Here is what its tests prove—and what they do not—about whether small cars are more fun.

Yes, a small car can be exceptionally fun—but its size is only part of the recipe. The Audi S3 combines compact-sedan dimensions with strong turbocharged performance, standard all-wheel drive, a quick dual-clutch transmission and a rear torque splitter designed to influence cornering behavior. Those systems, not simply the car’s footprint, explain why the S3 feels so engaging.

The evidence supports a narrower conclusion than “small cars are always more fun.” Independent tests found the 2025 S3 quick and enjoyable, while Audi’s current U.S. model adds hardware and drive modes aimed at sharper responses. There is no controlled study establishing a universal size-versus-fun rule, so the S3 is best understood as a persuasive example rather than proof of a law.

What does “fun” mean in a small performance car?

Driving enjoyment usually comes from several sensations working together: immediate acceleration, predictable steering, a chassis that responds to weight transfer, traction when you accelerate out of a bend and controls that make the driver feel involved. A smaller body can help because it is easier to place on a narrow road, appears to change direction more readily and generally asks less space for the same maneuver. Those are tendencies, not guarantees.

A small car can still feel dull if its steering is vague, its transmission hesitates or its engine lacks flexibility. Conversely, a larger vehicle can be entertaining when its suspension, power delivery and driver controls are well judged. The useful question is therefore not whether short dimensions automatically create fun, but whether a particular car uses its size with the right mechanical ingredients.

Why the Audi S3 is a strong test case

The S3 is a compact luxury sedan with an intentionally athletic character. Car and Driver describes the 2025 model as a small sedan with a performance-oriented side, and Road & Track reports brisk power delivery and a differential that becomes especially noticeable in tighter turns. These are road-test impressions, not controlled evidence that compact cars are inherently more enjoyable.

Power that is easy to exploit

A performance car feels entertaining when its power is available often, not only at a racetrack speed. The S3’s turbocharged engine is tuned to provide strong midrange thrust, so a driver can feel a response when accelerating out of a corner or joining a highway. That broad usefulness is part of why Road & Track called the car “a hoot” while discussing its acceleration and midrange power. The phrase is the author’s opinion; the measurable results are listed separately below.

All-wheel drive that works with the driver

Quattro all-wheel drive is standard on the current U.S. S3, and the seven-speed S tronic transmission is standard as well. All-wheel drive can make a small, powerful sedan easier to use in wet or cold conditions, but the S3’s appeal is not limited to added traction. Audi says its torque splitter can distribute available power individually to the rear wheels. In a bend, that capability is intended to help the car rotate and put power down rather than simply push straight ahead.

A mode for a more aggressive character

Audi’s Dynamic Plus mode is intended to intensify the driving experience. A selectable mode cannot transform an unresponsive chassis into a great one, but it gives the driver a deliberate way to prioritize sharper behavior. Audi’s own description of the updated European car highlights “Increased output, a torque splitter, and other technology highlights” for performance and agile handling. That statement is manufacturer positioning, not an independent verdict.

2025 and 2026 S3 figures: keep the sources and markets separate

The numbers below describe different vehicles or tests. Manufacturer claims, independent measurements and regional specifications should not be blended into a single set of “S3” figures.

Vehicle or test Power Torque Acceleration Drivetrain/transmission Price or economy
2026 S3, United States (Audi USA listing) 328 hp 295 lb-ft 0–60 mph in 4.4 seconds (claimed) Quattro all-wheel drive; seven-speed S tronic standard Starting price $52,000
2025 S3, Car and Driver test Not stated in the cited test summary Not stated in the cited test summary 60 mph in 4.2 seconds (tested) Not stated in the cited test summary EPA: 23 mpg city, 31 mpg highway
2025 S3, Road & Track test vehicle Not stated in the cited test summary Not stated in the cited test summary Not stated in the cited test summary Not stated in the cited test summary Base price $49,995; as-tested $60,840; EPA 23/31/26 mpg city/highway/combined
2024 European S3 Sedan and Sportback (Audi MediaCenter release) 333 PS 420 Nm 0–100 km/h in 4.7 seconds European-market specification Price and U.S. EPA ratings not stated

The 2026 figures are Audi USA claims for the U.S. model. The 4.2-second result is Car and Driver’s measurement of a 2025 car, so it should not be presented as the official 2026 acceleration. Likewise, the European release uses PS, Nm and 0–100 km/h; those units and that market make direct substitution into the U.S. table inappropriate.

How the S3 turns compact size into cornering involvement

Placement and confidence

A compact sedan generally demands fewer corrections in a lane or a bend than a larger vehicle. That can make a winding road feel more manageable and lets the driver concentrate on line choice and throttle timing. The S3’s performance hardware gives that manageable footprint something to work with: power arrives quickly, and the all-wheel-drive system provides a consistent way to use it.

Torque split at the rear axle

The torque splitter is the distinctive hardware in the current S3’s handling story. Audi says it can direct available power separately to the rear wheels. Road & Track found the effect most noticeable in tighter turns, where an actively managed rear axle can help the car feel more willing to rotate than a conventional front-biased setup. The reviewer’s observation indicates where the system is felt; it does not quantify a universal handling advantage over every rival.

Performance that remains usable on public roads

Very high power can make a car difficult to enjoy legally or safely outside a track. The S3’s compact format and strong midrange mean a driver can experience its responses during ordinary on-ramps, roundabouts and linked corners without requiring extreme speeds. That accessibility is one reason the car fits the idea of “fun” better than a machine whose abilities only emerge at the limit.

What independent testing says about the driving experience

Car and Driver’s 2025 review measured a 4.2-second run to 60 mph and described the handling and powertrain positively. That is an instrumented result from one publication’s test conditions, not a promise that every car or driver will reproduce it.

Road & Track also reported brisk acceleration and highlighted the torque-splitting differential in tight turns. Its “a hoot” summary captures an editorial driving impression. Taken together, the reviews support the claim that the S3 is engaging. They do not isolate the contribution of body size from engine output, transmission calibration, tire choice or torque-vectoring hardware.

Does the S3 remain livable every day?

Fun loses value if a car is exhausting to commute in or cannot carry what its owner needs. The S3’s sedan body provides a conventional four-door layout, and the cited reviews treat it as an everyday luxury car with an athletic side rather than a single-purpose track special.

Fuel use

Car and Driver reports EPA ratings of 23 mpg city and 31 mpg highway for the 2025 model. Road & Track lists 23/31/26 mpg city/highway/combined for its tested vehicle. These are 2025 figures and should not be reassigned to the 2026 model without a current rating.

Cargo and cabin compromises

Car and Driver identifies limited trunk space as a drawback. That matters if the S3 is expected to handle bulky luggage, sports equipment or frequent airport runs. A compact performance sedan can be easier to place in traffic and parking spaces, but compact dimensions also limit cargo volume and rear-seat flexibility compared with larger vehicles.

Noise at speed

Car and Driver also notes road noise at higher speeds. Tire, pavement and chassis sound are part of the trade for a car tuned to feel responsive. Buyers who prioritize quiet long-distance cruising should include an extended highway drive in their evaluation rather than assuming the S3’s luxury badge guarantees isolation.

What the S3 does—and does not—prove about small cars

What it supports

  • A compact body can make a powerful car feel approachable and easy to position.
  • Strong midrange output and a quick transmission can create satisfying responses in ordinary driving.
  • Torque management at the rear axle can add rotation and traction in tighter corners.
  • All-wheel drive can broaden the range of weather and road conditions in which the car feels usable.

What it cannot establish

  • There is no controlled population study in the cited material showing that smaller cars are generally more fun.
  • The S3’s acceleration cannot be used as a substitute for a size-based comparison; its engine, drivetrain and chassis systems all contribute.
  • Positive reviews do not create a universal ranking against unnamed alternatives. No like-for-like rival test is established here.

In other words, “small cars have more fun” is a preference-led generalization. Some drivers value lightness, narrow dimensions and immediacy; others prefer the stability, space or quietness of a larger vehicle. The S3 makes the compact argument compelling by adding serious hardware, not by relying on size alone.

How to evaluate whether an S3 will be fun for you

  1. Separate the model year. If you are shopping in the United States, verify whether the vehicle is a 2025 or 2026 model before comparing acceleration, price or equipment.
  2. Check the market. European S3 specifications use different output units and performance claims from the U.S. listing. Do not compare PS directly with U.S. horsepower without accounting for the unit difference.
  3. Test the torque splitter where it matters. Include several tighter bends at safe, legal speeds and notice whether the car changes direction under power in a way you enjoy.
  4. Try every drive mode you would actually use. Dynamic Plus is intended to sharpen the experience, but the most aggressive setting may not suit commuting, wet roads or passengers.
  5. Drive a highway section. Listen for the road noise noted by Car and Driver and decide whether the trade is acceptable for your typical trips.
  6. Load your normal gear. The limited trunk identified in testing may be irrelevant to one owner and a deal-breaker to another. Measure with your own luggage, stroller or equipment rather than relying on a brochure impression.
  7. Budget beyond the base price. Audi USA lists a $52,000 starting price for the 2026 U.S. car, while Road & Track’s 2025 test vehicle reached $60,840 as tested. Options and equipment can materially change the amount paid.

The practical verdict: is the S3 more fun because it is small?

The Audi S3 demonstrates why compact performance cars can feel unusually entertaining. Its manageable size helps the driver place the car, while strong output, standard quattro, a seven-speed S tronic transmission and a rear torque splitter turn that compact package into something responsive. Independent testing supports the impression that it is quick and engaging, and the car remains usable enough for daily duties.

But the honest answer to “Do small cars have more fun?” is conditional. Small dimensions create an opportunity for involvement; they do not guarantee it. In the S3, the fun comes from the interaction of size with power delivery, transmission behavior, torque distribution and drive-mode calibration. Choose it if that blend—and the compromises in trunk space, highway noise and premium-car pricing—matches your priorities. Do not choose it on the word “small” alone.
