Sometimes—but mainly when those features make a repair more complex, not because they automatically add a large annual maintenance charge. Cameras, radar and other advanced driver-assistance-system (ADAS) hardware can add replacement and calibration costs after a collision or a windshield change. The available evidence does not establish a universal routine-maintenance premium for every budget SUV with premium-style equipment.
To compare two vehicles fairly, separate scheduled servicing from damage-related repair, identify where each sensor is mounted, and obtain a model- and location-specific estimate for calibration. A luxury-looking feature list is not, by itself, a maintenance-cost forecast.

Maintenance and repair are different budgets
“Maintain” can mean two very different ownership expenses. Scheduled maintenance is the work listed in the owner’s manual: oil and filter service where applicable, inspections, brake and tire wear checks, fluid service, and other time- or mileage-based items. Unscheduled repair is work caused by a collision, a broken windshield, a failed component, or a warning light. Premium-style technology affects those categories differently.
| Expense type | Typical examples | What the available evidence shows |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled maintenance | Fluids, filters, inspections, tires and brakes | No comparable model-by-model dataset proves that a budget SUV with luxury-style comfort or driver-assistance equipment has a universal annual premium. |
| Damage-related repair | Replacing a radar unit, camera, mirror or camera-equipped windshield; calibrating the system afterward | AAA documented substantial ADAS-related costs in selected 2023 collision and glass-replacement scenarios. |
| Unexpected electronic failure | A failed sensor, wiring fault or control module | Cost depends on the exact vehicle, failed part, diagnosis, software and repair provider; a general figure is not established. |
That distinction prevents a common mistake: treating a potential collision expense as if it were a recurring oil-change charge. A vehicle can have inexpensive scheduled service yet be costly to restore after a bumper or windshield is damaged.

Why ADAS can make a repair bill higher
Many features marketed as premium or “Mercedes-like”—automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assistance, blind-spot monitoring, surround-view cameras and automated parking—depend on hardware placed around the vehicle. A camera may sit behind the windshield; radar may be hidden in a bumper or grille; cameras can be integrated into side mirrors; and ultrasonic sensors can be set into the bumper cover.
Damage can affect more than the visible body panel
A minor-looking impact can damage or misalign a sensor even when the exterior panel appears repairable. Replacing the part is only one step. The shop may need to aim the sensor, perform a static or dynamic calibration, update software and verify that diagnostic trouble codes have cleared. A windshield replacement can similarly require camera recalibration because the camera’s position relative to the glass and road has changed.
Calibration requires specialist capability
Calibration may require a level, unobstructed area, targets or other equipment, trained technicians and current software. A body shop that can repair a bumper is not automatically equipped to calibrate every make and model. If calibration is omitted or performed incorrectly, the system can issue warnings, operate inaccurately or remain unavailable.

The added complexity is a reason to ask for a complete estimate, not a reason to disable the feature. AAA automotive engineering director Greg Brannon said in the organization’s December 14, 2023 study: “Consumers should know about the repair costs associated with these technologies. But they must also understand the importance of fixing them since improperly functioning systems could result in a deadly crash.”
What AAA measured in its 2023 study
AAA examined three model-year 2023 vehicles and selected repair scenarios. Its figures are study-era averages and ranges for those tested vehicles and conditions; they are not an annual charge and do not represent every SUV.
| Scenario or component | AAA figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| ADAS components in a minor front-collision repair | Average $1,540, or 13.2% of the average total repair | The share attributed to ADAS parts and related work in AAA’s tested scenario, not a typical yearly maintenance bill. |
| Windshield glass replacement attributable to ADAS components | Average $360, or 25.4% of total repair cost | Additional ADAS-related cost in AAA’s glass-replacement scenario; the windshield itself is not included in that percentage’s description. |
| Front radar sensor | $500–$1,300 | Typical additional component cost range listed by AAA, including specified labor/calibration over normal collision bodywork. |
| Front camera sensor | $600–$800 | Excludes replacement windshield cost. |
| Mirror-mounted camera | $740–$1,600 | Study-era range for the component and associated specified work. |
| Windshield camera sensor | $900–$1,200 | Applies when the camera sensor itself is involved, separate from the glass price. |
| Parking-assist ultrasonic sensors | $300–$1,000 | Range listed for the sensors and specified labor/calibration. |
These numbers show why two visually similar SUVs can produce different insurance or out-of-pocket repair estimates. They do not show that every vehicle equipped with these systems costs $1,540 more to maintain each year. The study covered three vehicles and particular repair events, and prices vary with parts availability, labor rates, vehicle trim and the calibration procedure.

What the owner evidence says about real-world repair difficulty
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reported on February 15, 2023, that most of the more than 3,000 owners it contacted had never needed a crash-avoidance feature repaired. Among the minority who had, however, resolution was not always straightforward. IIHS senior research scientist and survey designer Alexandra Mueller said: “Most of the more than 3,000 owners we contacted said they had never needed to have their crash avoidance features repaired, but for the minority of owners who did, the problems weren’t always resolved easily.”

The survey is useful for understanding repair experience, but it does not provide a guaranteed cost for a particular SUV. It also suggests a practical check before buying: find out which local facilities can diagnose and calibrate the systems on the exact model and trim. A lower-priced vehicle may still require a dealer or a specialized collision center for certain work.
Which premium-style features are and are not covered by the evidence
Features with a documented repair-cost pathway
- Forward-facing cameras behind the windshield.
- Front radar sensors in the grille or bumper.
- Blind-spot or surround-view cameras in mirrors and body panels.
- Ultrasonic parking sensors in bumpers.
- Any system that requires calibration after glass, bumper, mirror or suspension-related work.
These systems can add a distinct parts, diagnostic and calibration line to a collision or glass estimate.

Features for which a universal maintenance premium is not established
The cited evidence does not quantify routine costs for panoramic roofs, power seats, heated or ventilated seats, premium audio, larger infotainment screens, ambient lighting or air suspension across budget SUVs. Such equipment can be vehicle-specific: a failed motor, module, compressor or glass panel may be expensive, but no broad annual premium is established here. Check the exact warranty, service schedule, replacement-part pricing and local labor rate instead of assuming that a luxury-style feature has a predictable cost.
How to compare two budget SUVs before buying
- List the exact model year, trim and option package. “The same SUV” can use different cameras, radar units or windshield designs depending on trim. Save the equipment list and identify whether each system is standard or optional.
- Map each sensor to its location. Note windshield cameras, bumper radar, mirror cameras and parking sensors. A sensor in a vulnerable exterior location has a different damage risk from software-only equipment.
- Separate scheduled service from repair events. Compare the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule, included service and consumables independently from a hypothetical windshield or collision repair.
- Ask about calibration triggers. Ask a dealer or qualified collision and glass facility whether calibration is required after windshield replacement, bumper removal, mirror replacement, wheel alignment or suspension work.
- Request a written local estimate. Ask for parts, diagnosis, labor, calibration, software updates and any post-repair scan as separate lines. The AAA ranges are context, not a substitute for a quote on your vehicle.
- Check warranty and insurance treatment. Determine whether the basic warranty covers an electronic failure, what the glass or collision deductible would be, and whether your insurer requires a particular repair network.
- Compare total ownership cost. Add fuel, tires, scheduled maintenance, repairs, insurance, depreciation and financing rather than judging the feature list alone.
Questions to ask a dealer, glass shop or body shop
- Which ADAS sensors are fitted to this exact VIN and trim?
- Does this windshield contain a camera mount or special optical area?
- What calibration is required after replacement, and is it static, dynamic or both?
- Is calibration included in the quoted labor, or billed separately?
- Do you have the manufacturer-approved targets, alignment space and software subscription?
- Will you provide a diagnostic scan and a report showing that warnings and fault codes are cleared?
- Are aftermarket glass and replacement sensors approved for this system, and could they affect calibration or warranty coverage?
- How long might parts or calibration equipment delay the repair?
These questions expose costs that a basic “windshield replacement” or “bumper repair” price may omit.
Other factors that can dominate the bill
IIHS-HLDI’s August 11, 2026 analysis notes that repair costs are influenced by several factors, including vehicle size, increasingly sophisticated components and advanced powertrains. ADAS is therefore only one possible explanation for a price difference between SUVs. A larger vehicle may use more material and cost more to repair; hybrid or electric components can introduce their own training and safety requirements; and parts availability and local labor rates can outweigh a feature-level difference.

There is also a safety trade-off. Crash-avoidance systems can prevent some collisions or reduce their severity, potentially avoiding a repair altogether. The existence of a costly sensor does not mean the technology has a negative ownership value; it means the financial consequences are different when a damaged system must be restored.
Build a realistic ownership budget
AAA’s September 15, 2026 ownership-cost analysis modeled five years and 75,000 miles and emphasized that actual expenses vary by location, driving habits and operating conditions. Its broad new-vehicle ownership benchmark should not be treated as the maintenance cost of a particular budget SUV. Use it as a reminder to budget by category and by the conditions in which you drive.
For a personal estimate, create separate lines for:
- Scheduled maintenance required by the manufacturer.
- Normal wear items such as tires, brake components and wiper blades.
- Glass and collision deductibles.
- Potential ADAS calibration after covered work.
- Unscheduled mechanical and electrical repairs.
- Fuel or charging, insurance, registration and depreciation.
AAA’s preventive-maintenance guidance is straightforward: follow the manufacturer-recommended service schedule and check fluids and tire pressures regularly. Those routine actions remain necessary whether or not the SUV has premium-style electronics.
Bottom line for a budget-SUV buyer
Mercedes-like equipment does not automatically make a budget SUV expensive to maintain. The clearest added cost appears when ADAS hardware or camera-equipped glass is damaged and must be replaced, diagnosed and calibrated. AAA’s 2023 study found an average $1,540 ADAS contribution in a tested minor front-collision repair and an average $360 ADAS-related contribution in a tested windshield replacement, but those figures apply to selected model-year 2023 vehicles and scenarios—not to annual ownership in general.
Choose between SUVs by checking the exact trim’s service schedule, warranty, sensor locations, calibration requirements and local repair quotes. Treat routine maintenance and collision repair as separate decisions, and include the possibility that effective crash avoidance may prevent some repairs in the first place.
