A 2026 simulation of heavy-duty electric drayage trucks working at Georgia’s Port of Savannah found that lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) packs delivered more years of useful life than nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) packs. The same analysis found that changing how an NMC pack is charged, especially reducing the time it rests at a high state of charge, could increase its modeled life by more than a factor of two.
That is a modeled comparison, not a long-term field trial of thousands of trucks. Your result can change with route, annual mileage, climate, thermal management, charging schedule, pack design and the manufacturer’s definition of “end of life.”

What the truck-specific evidence actually shows
The most directly relevant comparison is “Daily operational impacts on battery degradation in heavy-duty electric drayage trucks,” by Ankur Shiledar, Joseph N. E. Lucero, Ruixiao Sun, Manfredi Villani, Vivek A. Sujan, Simona Onori and Giorgio Rizzoni. Published in eTransportation, volume 28, article 100567, in May 2026 (DOI 10.1016/j.etran.2026.100567), it models trucks operating around the Port of Savannah.
The researchers combined a detailed vehicle simulation with semi-empirical aging models calibrated against experimental data. The analysis includes both cycling aging (wear caused by charging and driving) and calendar aging (wear that occurs while the battery is sitting), plus seasonal conditions, daily operations, charging strategy and storage.

The study’s abstract states: “Our results demonstrate that LFP outperforms NMC in terms of years of useful life; however, by utilizing charging strategies that minimize the amount of time the battery spends resting at high levels of state-of-charge, the lifespan of the battery pack that uses NMC can nonetheless be increased by more than a factor of two.”
That wording matters. It establishes an LFP advantage in this modeled drayage case, but it does not provide a universal LFP-to-NMC ratio, an absolute number of years, or a guarantee for another truck, route or climate. The public record for the study does not include the underlying result tables needed to turn its conclusion into a fixed life expectancy.
Why chemistry is only part of battery life
High-state-of-charge parking
A truck that finishes a shift at a high state of charge and remains plugged in for hours can age differently from one that reaches the required charge shortly before departure. The Savannah model found that limiting this high-state-of-charge dwell substantially improved modeled NMC life. The improvement was greater than twofold in the study’s modeled conditions; it should not be interpreted as a promise that every NMC pack will match LFP after a charging change.

Battery wear depends on how much energy moves through the pack and how that energy is delivered. A drayage truck making repeated port trips has a different pattern of shallow stops, rapid charging and idle periods from a regional truck covering longer distances or a long-haul tractor. Annual utilization, route length, payload and the number of charging events all affect the comparison.
Calendar aging and storage
The study evaluates aging while the truck is operating and while it is parked. A fleet that leaves vehicles unused for weekends, seasonal shutdowns or long maintenance periods may see a different balance between calendar and cycling aging than a continuously utilized fleet. Storage state of charge and temperature therefore belong in a life estimate, not just miles driven.

Temperature control
Seasonal variation was part of the Savannah analysis. DAF describes liquid cooling and thermal stability for its own LFP products, but the available sources do not establish a universal climate ranking for complete LFP and NMC truck packs. Cooling hardware, control software, cell format and pack integration can matter as much as the chemistry label.
What “lasts longer” can mean
Fleet discussions often use “battery life” for several different measurements. Ask which one a quote or warranty actually addresses.

This is the measure in which LFP outperformed NMC in the Savannah model.
- Charging cycles: a count of charge throughput under a specified test definition. One cycle in a laboratory is not automatically one year, one route or one fixed number of miles.
- State of health (SOH): remaining capacity or another health metric compared with the pack when new. A stated SOH threshold must be read alongside the measurement method and operating conditions.
- Operational availability: whether the truck can still move and perform basic functions. A pack can remain operational while no longer delivering the range or payload performance required by a specific route.
- Contractual performance: what the manufacturer is obligated to provide under the warranty, including time, mileage, capacity or SOH thresholds and exclusions.
These definitions are not interchangeable. A truck may remain drivable after losing enough usable energy to require a route change, while a warranty may cover only a narrower threshold or period.
What current truck makers claim
Manufacturer disclosures illustrate why the exact product and warranty language matter. They are product claims, not controlled head-to-head tests of LFP and NMC in identical trucks.

DAF’s five-times statement also comes with an important qualification: its information sheet acknowledges that LFP cells do not provide the same capacity-to-weight ratio as some other technologies, although pack design can offset part of that difference. Do not convert a cycle claim directly into years, payload, range or cost without matching the test conditions to your operation.

How to read a battery warranty
Warranty duration alone is not enough. Before comparing two trucks, obtain the complete terms and record:
- the time limit and any mileage or energy-throughput limit;
- the minimum capacity or SOH threshold;
- whether the threshold applies to the complete pack, individual modules or usable energy;
- required maintenance, software updates, charging practices and approved service procedures;
- coverage for defects versus gradual capacity loss;
- temperature, storage and fast-charging exclusions;
- the remedy if the threshold is missed: repair, module replacement, pack replacement or another remedy.
Renault Trucks explains that efficiency decreases progressively as a battery ages and distinguishes keeping a battery operational from a contractual commitment that it will continue meeting the performance required for the vehicle’s application. That distinction is more useful than treating any “battery guarantee” as a promise of new-truck range for a fixed number of years. Renault’s page was published in 2020, so its wording should be treated as an explanation of the distinction, not as a current claim about being the only manufacturer to offer a particular guarantee.
Compare the truck, not just the chemistry
1. Match the duty cycle
Start with the actual route: port drayage, regional distribution and long-haul work have different energy throughput and dwell patterns. The Savannah result is most relevant to operations resembling that modeled drayage case. Ask the manufacturer to model your route with your payload, grades, traffic, weather and annual schedule.
2. Calculate required usable energy
Compare usable, not merely installed, capacity. DAF lists 210–525 kWh configurations in its 2026 announcement. Daimler Truck describes the eActros 600 as having 621 kWh installed and approximately 95% usable. These figures cannot be compared without accounting for the vehicle, reserve strategy, route assumptions and payload.
3. Map the charging and parking schedule
Document when each truck arrives, when charging starts, the target state of charge, departure time and weekend storage condition. If a truck will sit full overnight, ask whether charging controls can finish close to departure or hold a lower storage level. The modeled NMC result shows why this operational detail can materially alter life.

4. Check thermal management
Request the pack’s cooling method, operating temperature limits, charging-power limits at different temperatures and how the controls protect cells during repeated fast charging. DAF describes liquid cooling and thermal stability for its LFP packs, but a feature on one product is not a universal chemistry comparison.
5. Price the route at the warranty threshold
Estimate when reduced usable energy would force an extra charging stop, lower payload or route reassignment. Then compare that point with the warranty’s stated capacity or SOH threshold. A longer nominal warranty may not cover the performance loss that matters to your business.
6. Ask for end-of-life and service plans
Clarify whether the manufacturer supports module repair, pack replacement, refurbishment, second-life use and diagnostic reporting. A fleet’s financial exposure depends on the remedy and downtime as well as on the chemistry’s aging rate.

The Savannah study’s strongest operational lesson is not to leave a pack at a high state of charge longer than necessary. A fleet can turn that finding into procedures without assuming that every truck behaves identically:

- Set the vehicle’s departure time and let the charging system schedule completion near that time when the route allows.
- Use the lowest departure state of charge that safely covers the planned route, reserve and likely detours.
- Define a lower storage target for weekends or extended idle periods, following the truck maker’s written guidance.
- Record charging start and finish times, state of charge, energy delivered and battery temperature.
- Review the data by vehicle and route rather than applying one fleet-wide assumption.
- Have the manufacturer confirm that the selected schedule is compatible with the warranty.
These steps do not prove that an NMC truck will equal an LFP truck. They reduce one avoidable aging exposure identified by the truck-specific model.

What the evidence does not establish
No robust, named, multi-manufacturer in-service fleet study was identified that compares LFP and NMC truck packs under equivalent duty cycles and follows both to end of life. The available truck-specific result is a simulation calibrated to experimental data, not a longitudinal census of operating vehicles.
There is also no supported universal conversion from DAF’s “up to five times” cycle statement to truck years or miles. Cycle tests can use different depth of discharge, temperatures, charge rates, rest periods and end-of-life thresholds. Applying that ratio to a fleet forecast would mix unlike measurements.
Until comparable field data is available, treat chemistry as one input to a vehicle-level decision. A well-managed NMC pack may deliver a better business result than a poorly matched LFP pack if it provides the required payload, range, charging speed and warranty at lower operational risk.

A practical decision rule for fleets
Choose LFP when the specific truck meets the route’s payload and range requirements and its warranty, usable energy and charging plan provide the desired service life. Its advantage in the Savannah model is a meaningful reason to investigate it, especially for high-utilization operations with substantial charging and storage exposure.
Keep NMC in contention when its energy-to-weight or packaging characteristics better fit the route, then use charging controls to limit high-state-of-charge dwell. The 2026 model indicates that this intervention can increase modeled NMC life by more than a factor of two under its conditions.
For a purchase decision, require both suppliers to submit the same information: route simulation, usable capacity, expected SOH over time, charging assumptions, thermal limits, warranty threshold, exclusions and remedy. Compare those documents on one worksheet. The chemistry label should be the starting question, not the final answer.
