No verified Tesla instruction or Cybertruck-specific procedure in the cited coverage tells owners to sand their truck’s exterior panels. The headline came from a November 27, 2023, pre-delivery article that drew on a DeLorean restoration expert’s comments about removing stains from a DeLorean—not advice for Cybertruck owners.
What “sand them down” referred to
“Them” means the Cybertruck’s exposed stainless-steel exterior panels. Futurism published the article on November 27, 2023, shortly before Tesla’s planned delivery event. Its wording raised a possibility; it did not document Cybertruck owners sanding their trucks or quote Tesla directing them to do so.
The sanding example concerned DeLoreans. Futurism cited DeLorean restoration expert Chris Nicholson, relaying his comments through the Wall Street Journal’s report. Nicholson said organic debris, such as bird feces, can leave stains on a DeLorean and that removing them may involve sanding away a top layer. That is restoration context for a different vehicle, not a Cybertruck maintenance procedure.
What the coverage established—and what it did not
Stainless steel brings a different exterior-care question
The Wall Street Journal report describes Tesla’s use of ultrahard stainless steel on the Cybertruck, noting that it does not need paint and resists dents. Its focus is the manufacturing difficulty of working with that material. It does not provide owner cleaning or sanding instructions.

Concerns and suggestions are not approved care guidance
Futurism discussed fingerprints and blemishes as concerns associated with stainless steel. It also mentioned a Reddit user’s suggestion of Bar Keepers Friend. That anecdote does not establish that the cleaner is compatible with Cybertruck panels, or that Tesla approves it.
The article also quoted a description attributed to a product called Cyber Shield: “Cyber Shield is a cutting-edge cleaner and protective solution that redefines the way you care for the exterior stainless surfaces of the Cybertruck.” Futurism said a Cybertruck Owners Club forum user had spotted the description and that it was unclear whether the spray would be available to owners. The quoted wording is not evidence of a verified Tesla announcement, current availability, or approval.

What Cybertruck owners should do before treating a stain
The cited articles do not establish current Tesla care instructions for sanding, Bar Keepers Friend, or Cyber Shield. Before using an abrasive or cleaner, consult current Tesla guidance for the vehicle and confirm that the specific product and method are compatible with its exterior finish. The DeLorean example is not a safe basis for trying to sand a Cybertruck panel.
