Do Crash-Test Ratings Change by Model Year or Trim? How to Check the Exact Vehicle

Crash ratings are tied to a specific year and vehicle configuration. Here is how NHTSA and IIHS handle carry-over results, trim equipment, redesigns and midyear VIN changes.

Yes. Crash-test ratings can change by model year, body style, powertrain, trim, equipment package, or even build date—but they can also be carried forward when the agency finds no safety-relevant change. A model name by itself is not enough to identify the result that applies to your vehicle. Check the exact model year and variant on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rating pages, then read the notes about equipment, carry-over coverage, and production dates.

Why a rating can change from one model year to the next

A crash rating reflects a particular vehicle configuration tested under a particular program and test version. Results may differ when the manufacturer changes the body structure, airbags, seat belts, sensors, crash-avoidance hardware, vehicle weight, or powertrain. A redesigned vehicle normally requires a fresh evaluation because the parts that manage crash energy or protect occupants may be different.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The testing program itself can also change. IIHS has added, revised, and discontinued tests over time. Two vehicles may both be described as having a “good” result while having been assessed under different procedures. Always record the test name, model year, and agency before deciding that two scores are equivalent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sometimes nothing relevant changes. IIHS says it reviews yearly vehicle changes and carries a previous rating forward when it finds no change likely to affect crash performance. A later model-year page therefore does not necessarily represent a newly crashed vehicle.

NHTSA and IIHS measure different things

Before comparing vehicles, identify which agency produced the result. Their programs overlap in purpose but do not use the same tests, labels, or comparison rules.

Agency What its program covers How to interpret a result
NHTSA 5-Star Safety Ratings Frontal crashworthiness, side crashworthiness, and rollover resistance; an Overall Vehicle Score combines the program’s measures. Compare the Overall Vehicle Score only with vehicles in the same class and within 250 pounds of the rated vehicle. NHTSA categorizes vehicles by type and curb weight, so a star count is not an unrestricted ranking across every vehicle.
IIHS ratings Crashworthiness plus crash avoidance and mitigation evaluations, including individual tests whose names and requirements have changed over time. Name the specific test and model year. An overall award or headline result is not a substitute for reading the underlying crashworthiness and crash-prevention scores.

NHTSA describes its program this way: Each year, NHTSA crash tests vehicles as part of our 5-Star Safety Ratings program. The agency also verifies advanced crash-avoidance technology systems. That statement describes the program, not a promise that every vehicle and trim receives a new physical crash test every year.

How NHTSA identifies the vehicle being rated

NHTSA’s rating workflow asks you to select a model year, make, model, and then the matching vehicle variant. The returned record is tied to that variant, not merely to the marketing name. Variants can differ by body style, engine or power source, drive configuration, curb weight, or standard equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the vehicle’s registration or window-sticker information to match the record. If the selector lists several versions with similar names, do not choose the first result and assume it covers all of them. Confirm the body style and powertrain, and check any notes attached to the rating.

When a later-year result is a carry-over

IIHS cannot test every model every year. It examines whether a new model year includes changes that could alter crash performance. If its review finds no relevant structural, airbag, or restraint change, the prior rating can be carried to the newer model year.

A carry-over is different from a new test. It means the agency considers the earlier evidence applicable under its rules; it does not mean a newly built vehicle was crashed again. Look for wording on the rating page indicating that the result was carried over, extended, or newly tested.

Carry-over coverage can stop when a redesign or safety-relevant running change occurs. A vehicle with the same badge may therefore show one result for an earlier design and a different result after a major update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why a trim name alone does not settle applicability

Trims matter when they bring a relevant difference in structure, restraint equipment, weight, lighting, or crash-avoidance hardware. A cosmetic package that leaves those elements unchanged may share the same crashworthiness result, while a version with different equipment may not.

NHTSA’s communications guidance says that when a rating is limited to a particular configuration—such as a specific power source or engine choice—the applicable equipment should be identified. Read the equipment description instead of treating a rating for one trim as universal.

IIHS awards can impose equipment requirements beyond the crashworthiness test itself. In its 2024 award announcement, IIHS required acceptable or good headlights across all trim levels for the relevant award. The award for a redesigned Forester excluded the Wilderness trim because that trim still used the prior model-year design. This is an example of the 2024 rules, not a permanent rule for every future award; verify the criteria for the award year you are reading.

Mid-model-year changes: the build date and VIN boundary

A manufacturer can change a vehicle after production has begun. If the change affects the rating, NHTSA says the revised result should identify the manufacturing date or VIN from which it applies. Two vehicles with the same model year and trim name can therefore fall on opposite sides of the rating boundary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When buying a used vehicle, record the build date from the driver’s-door label or obtain the VIN. If a rating note says the improvement applies to vehicles built on or after a stated date or beginning with a specified VIN, use that boundary—not the registration date or the date shown in an advertisement.

If you cannot establish where the vehicle falls, treat the applicability as unresolved and ask the manufacturer or dealer for documentation tied to the VIN. Do not assign the newer result solely because the vehicle is labeled with the newer model year.

Platform sharing, hybrids, and electric versions

Related models do not automatically share a rating. IIHS may extend a result to a platform-sharing vehicle when there are no major differences in structure, airbags, seat belts, or weight. The rating page’s coverage statement controls; a shared platform is not, by itself, proof of identical protection.

IIHS notes that a plug-in hybrid result may sometimes be extended from a gasoline variant. Fully electric variants must be tested separately. Battery mass, floor structure, restraint calibration, and weight distribution can change the crash response enough that the gasoline vehicle’s result cannot simply be assumed to apply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the exact powertrain and body style in both agencies’ records. If the page names only one version, do not broaden the claim to every related vehicle without an explicit extension statement.

A step-by-step way to check your vehicle

  1. Write down the identity. Record model year, make, model, body style, powertrain, trim, VIN, and build date if available. Include whether it is hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or fully electric.
  2. Run the NHTSA search. Select the model year, make, model, and the matching vehicle variant. Open the detailed result, not just the star summary, and note the listed equipment and any applicability limits.
  3. Run the IIHS search for the same year. Match the model, body style, powertrain, and relevant equipment. Determine whether the result is newly tested, carried over, or extended from another vehicle.
  4. Read change notes. Look for references to headlights, automatic emergency braking or other crash-prevention systems, airbags, seat belts, structural revisions, and production changes. Record any date or VIN boundary.
  5. Match the test program. When comparing vehicles, use the same agency and the same named test where possible. Do not compare a NHTSA Overall Vehicle Score directly with an IIHS award label.
  6. Check the underlying results. Read frontal, side, rollover, crashworthiness, and crash-avoidance evaluations separately. An annual award may include equipment criteria that are not part of the crashworthiness score itself.

How to compare two vehicles without creating a false ranking

For NHTSA, compare Overall Vehicle Scores only within the same vehicle class and when the vehicles are within 250 pounds of the rated vehicle. A heavier or differently classified vehicle can behave differently even if the star totals look similar.

For IIHS, compare the same test version and model year. A “good” rating from an older test may not measure the same injury or structural performance as a “good” rating from a revised test. Identify whether you are looking at crashworthiness or crash avoidance/mitigation; those are distinct dimensions.

Situation What you can reasonably conclude What you should not conclude
Same model, unchanged design, later year marked carry-over The agency considers the earlier result applicable under its carry-over rules. That a new vehicle was physically crash-tested that year.
Same name, redesigned body The new design may require and receive a separate evaluation. That the old rating automatically transfers.
Different trim with the same listed structure and restraints The crashworthiness result may be shared if the agency states that coverage. That lighting or crash-avoidance equipment is identical.
Gasoline model versus fully electric counterpart Each should have its own rating record. That the gasoline result covers the electric version.
Vehicle built after a documented running change The revised result may apply from the stated date or VIN onward. That every vehicle in the model year has the revised performance.

What the 2024 fleet-coverage figure means

In an October 23, 2024 announcement, NHTSA said that 37 selected model-year 2025 vehicles, combined with previously tested models that had no significant new-model-year changes, were expected to represent approximately 87% of the new-vehicle fleet. That is an estimate of fleet coverage, not a claim that 87% of individual trims received a new crash test. A large share of the market can be represented by carry-over results.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Searching only the model name: Add the exact year and variant, then verify body style and powertrain.
  • Assuming every annual page means a new test: Look for carry-over or extension language.
  • Treating an award as a crash score: Read the individual crashworthiness and crash-avoidance results and the award’s equipment requirements.
  • Ignoring a midyear boundary: Use the stated build date or VIN cutoff.
  • Comparing unlike vehicles: For NHTSA, stay within the same class and within 250 pounds; for IIHS, match the test version.
  • Assuming related vehicles are identical: Confirm the agency’s specific coverage statement, especially for hybrids and electric variants.

What a rating can—and cannot—answer

A rating can tell you how the identified configuration performed in the agency’s defined tests and whether specified crash-avoidance equipment met that program’s criteria. It cannot establish that every trim, powertrain, or build date under the same marketing name has identical performance. It also cannot turn results from different test versions into a perfectly comparable time series.

For a purchase or safety investigation, preserve the rating page’s model year, variant description, test name, and applicability notes with the VIN and build date. That record lets you explain why a result applies to one vehicle and not automatically to another carrying the same badge.

The practical answer

Crash-test ratings vary by model year and trim whenever the vehicle, equipment, production range, or test program changes. They remain the same when an agency determines that no relevant change occurred and carries the earlier result forward. The reliable method is to identify the exact vehicle, check both agencies’ records, read every applicability note, and compare only like-for-like tests.
