For shoppers, the practical question is whether the exact car’s controls make common tasks easy to find and use.
What do car buyers say they prefer?
The clearest direct evidence points to a mixed interface. S&P Global Mobility says 48% of respondents worldwide preferred touchscreens combined with buttons and/or knobs in its 2024 HMI Consumer Survey, summarized on its 2025 survey page. The survey covered nearly 8,000 people and asked about in-vehicle interfaces, user experience, feature preferences, and willingness to pay.
That result supports interest in combining screens with physical controls. It does not mean that 48% dislike all touchscreens, establish that most people want an all-button dashboard, or show that buyers are switching to used cars for this reason. The published summary does not provide enough detail to infer those conclusions.
What do owners report about multimedia systems?
JD Power’s 2025 U.S. Multimedia Quality and Satisfaction Study reported 42.3 multimedia-related problems per 100 vehicles. Its 92,694 participants were purchasers or lessees of new 2025 model-year vehicles, surveyed after 90 days of ownership; fieldwork ran from June 2024 through May 2025. The study’s September 15, 2025 release says overall multimedia problems fell from 44.1 per 100 vehicles in 2024, while reported touchscreen and digital-display problems rose from 4.0 to 4.2 per 100 vehicles.

These are reported-problem rates, not a poll of control preferences or a count of buyers abandoning new cars. Lisa Boor, JD Power’s senior manager of auto benchmarking and mobility development, said, “Vehicle owners desire technology that is easy to use and minimizes distractions while driving. User frustration builds when controls are confusing and screens are cluttered.” She also said a blend of touchscreen and physical buttons can enhance usability, emphasizing intuitive design rather than simply reducing the number of buttons.
Why do physical controls matter to usability?
A screen can consolidate many features and support flexible interfaces; physical controls can provide a consistent target that a driver may identify by feel. Neither format guarantees a good experience. Menu depth, placement, labels, screen responsiveness, tactile feedback, and the driver’s familiarity with the car all affect how easily a task can be completed.

ADAC’s vehicle-test findings
Germany’s ADAC reported that the average controls and usability grade in its car tests shifted from 2.3 in 2019 to 2.7 in 2025, with the latter characterized as merely satisfactory in its grading system. In its January 28, 2026 release, ADAC associated the deterioration with software-led controls, nested menus, and less tactile feedback. Its testing found that operating times increased in vehicles relying predominantly on touchscreens and that drivers needed more concentration to find functions or avoid errors. These are ADAC test results, not a global survey or a standardized international safety score.
ADAC also describes future Euro NCAP scoring provisions that give full points for “Direct Physical Input” for functions including indicators, hazard warning lights, the horn, wipers, and eCall; it says other functions must be reachable within one or two steps in the vehicle submenu. Treat this as ADAC’s description of the scoring approach, rather than a universal legal requirement for every car.

What a small real-world driving study adds
A 2025 peer-reviewed study by Harms, Auerbach, Papadimitriou, and Hagenzieker observed 30 drivers on a familiar route in their own and an unfamiliar car. In familiar vehicles, frequently used controls included indicators, radio volume, the sun visor, temperature adjustment, and wiper speed. Participants interacted less with unfamiliar cars, and task frequency varied with familiarity, age, gender, weather, and vehicle type. The study helps explain why a test drive matters; it did not compare crash rates or prove that every physical control is safer. See the TU Delft Research Portal record.
Is touchscreen dislike driving shoppers to used cars?
The evidence cited here does not establish that trend. The global survey measures interface preferences, JD Power measures multimedia problems among recent U.S. new-vehicle owners, ADAC grades cars it tests, and the driving study observes a small group of drivers. None directly tracks whether people choose a used vehicle specifically to get knobs and buttons.

That distinction matters: a shopper may prefer physical climate or audio controls without rejecting a touchscreen for navigation, settings, or other functions. A mixed layout may be exactly what the survey result reflects.

Judge the particular model year, trim, and vehicle in front of you rather than relying on a brand reputation or dashboard photo. Consumer Reports’ used-car buying guide, updated July 21, 2026, advises: “Turn every knob and press every switch to make sure everything works as it should.” It also recommends inspecting the infotainment system and touchscreens and deciding during a test drive whether the controls are annoying.

- Try frequent tasks. With the car parked, locate and operate temperature, volume, wipers, hazards, and other functions you expect to use often. Notice whether a task has a dedicated control or requires navigating menus.
- Check glance demand and feedback. Ask whether controls are easy to identify by feel and whether routine adjustments require a long visual search. This is a useful usability check, not a guaranteed safety ranking.
- Test the exact configuration. Verify that every button, knob, touchscreen area, and relevant software function works on that model year and trim. A different trim or software version may have a different layout.
- Assess the whole used car. Weigh control usability alongside condition, reliability, safety, price, and your needs. Interface preference alone is not enough to establish that a car is a good purchase.
