The 2026 Formula 1 cars have a substantially redesigned hybrid power unit, but the available FIA and Formula 1 technical explainers do not establish that the cars sound louder, quieter, or measurably different from their predecessors. They publish no matched audio comparison or sound-pressure measurements. The engineering changes are real; the headline claim about a “huge difference” in sound needs direct audio evidence.
What changes in the 2026 power unit?
The 2026 car retains a 1.6-litre V6 turbo-hybrid power unit. The redesign changes the balance between combustion and electrical power: the electrical contribution increases, energy recovery rises, and the MGU-H is removed. Formula 1 describes the electrical share as roughly half of total power output. (Formula 1’s 2026 rules explainer; FIA overview)

The FIA’s published comparison gives the change in power components as follows. These are power figures, not sound measurements; they cannot be translated directly into decibels or a conclusion about what spectators will hear.
| Power-unit element | Previous figure | 2026 figure |
|---|---|---|
| Internal-combustion engine (ICE) | 550–560 kW | 400 kW |
| Battery element | 120 kW | 350 kW |
| Energy recuperable per lap | Not stated in the FIA comparison | 8.5 MJ |
Source for all figures: FIA’s regulations overview; the page does not state the date of the comparison. The FIA says the redesigned unit is intended to be more road-relevant while maintaining performance. Its Single Seater Technical Director, Nikolas Tombazis, described the goal as “a more even split between the power derived from the internal combustion element and electrical power.” That is a description of the design, not an acoustic claim.

Does that prove the cars will sound dramatically different?
No. The FIA and Formula 1 materials cited here explain the power-unit redesign but do not publish a controlled year-over-year recording, a sound-pressure reading, or another measured acoustic comparison. A lower ICE power figure and a larger electrical contribution alone do not establish whether a car will sound louder, quieter, or distinctly different from the trackside or on a broadcast.
The title’s wording may refer to a particular clip or impression, but it does not identify a team, car, recording, or observer. Without that specific evidence, “huge difference” is not a verified measurement. Treat it as an unconfirmed description rather than a settled technical finding.

What would make a sound comparison convincing?
A useful comparison would need recordings made under closely matched conditions, or published acoustic measurements. At minimum, compare the same circuit location, microphone and gain settings, recording setup, and similar car load. Differences in microphone placement, broadcast mixing, distance, and operating conditions can change what a clip sounds like; an unmatched pair of recordings cannot isolate the effect of the new rules.
- Engineering evidence: FIA and Formula 1 materials establish the changed power balance, MGU-H removal, and increased energy recovery.
- Acoustic evidence: The reviewed official explainers provide no matched sound recording or measured comparison between generations.
- Conclusion: The redesign is substantial, but its size cannot be used as a proxy for a measured sound difference.
Other 2026 changes are not sound measurements
The 2026 rules also change the chassis and aerodynamics. Formula 1 describes the cars as shorter, narrower, and lighter, and introduces active aerodynamics. Those changes help explain why the new generation is a broader redesign, but they do not demonstrate an acoustic difference.

Regulations can also change after publication. On 28 February 2026, the FIA announced unanimously approved amendments following pre-season tests and feedback from drivers and teams. For a claim about a particular technical requirement, consult the current regulation text rather than assuming an earlier overview reflects every amended detail: FIA amendment announcement and FIA Formula One technical regulations.
