You can add Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, navigation or a backup camera to many older cars without replacing the vehicle. The main choice is how much of the original dashboard you want to keep: use a portable display for the least-invasive upgrade, a vehicle-specific interface to work with a supported factory screen, or a replacement head unit for a more integrated system. The right option depends on your car’s exact year and factory audio equipment.
Choose the retrofit approach that fits your car

Compatibility is not determined by the car’s make and model alone. Check the exact year, factory radio or infotainment generation, screen type, amplifier setup and available audio inputs before ordering. A kit for a similar-looking trim or another radio generation may not work.
Use a portable display for the least-invasive upgrade
A standalone display can add wireless CarPlay and Android Auto without removing the factory stereo. Car and Driver Tech describes its Intellidash family as supporting 12V power, Bluetooth, a built-in 76–108 MHz FM transmitter, 3.5 mm AUX and a backup-camera input (Car and Driver Tech).
Choose the cleanest audio route your car supports. AUX or Bluetooth is usually preferable when available; FM can work when the stereo has no suitable input, but it may encounter interference. The product information lists these connection options but does not provide comparative interference measurements. Mount the screen so it does not obstruct the road view, controls or airbags, and secure its power cable away from the pedals.

This approach is a good fit if you mainly want phone navigation, calls and streaming while leaving the dashboard intact. Check that the display’s mounting arrangement suits your car before buying a portable wireless CarPlay and Android Auto display.
Keep the factory screen with a vehicle-specific interface
Some retrofit interfaces add CarPlay, Android Auto or Bluetooth through the original screen and stereo, and may retain factory controls or camera operation on supported vehicles. GTA Car Kits describes products intended to add modern features to original stereos while retaining factory screens and controls; Beat-Sonic and GROM also describe vehicle-specific interfaces and related products (GTA Car Kits, Beat-Sonic, GROM).
Before ordering, identify the equipment currently installed rather than relying on the vehicle model alone:

- Exact model year and trim.
- Factory radio name or part number and infotainment generation.
- Screen type and, where relevant, amplifier or premium-audio configuration.
- Whether a backup camera is already installed and how it connects.
- Available audio inputs and the controls you want to retain.
Then confirm the combination in the manufacturer’s fitment guide and installation manual. Interfaces can preserve the original appearance, but the added wiring and trim work are more involved than placing a portable display; a mismatch can make a kit unusable. A vehicle-specific factory-screen retrofit kit is an option only when its compatibility listing matches your equipment.
Replace the head unit for a more integrated upgrade
A replacement receiver can be the broadest integrated route if your dashboard opening, wiring and vehicle controls support it. Depending on the car, a double-DIN or floating-screen model may require a dash kit, wiring harness and antenna adapter, plus an interface for steering-wheel controls. The general retrofit options include head-unit replacement (Curio).
Check for factory equipment that may need additional adapters before choosing a receiver. An external amplifier, premium audio system or original backup camera can change what is required, and a generic camera input should not be assumed to work with the factory camera. Compare the parts and wiring needed for your exact setup before removing trim.

Add Bluetooth, a camera or other features
Bluetooth audio and hands-free calling
If the factory stereo has AUX, an AUX/Bluetooth adapter can add wireless audio. If it does not, a portable display or replacement receiver may provide Bluetooth. FM transmission is another fallback where a compatible stereo input is unavailable, though reception can be affected by interference.
Backup camera
Use a display or head unit with a camera input, or a vehicle-specific camera interface confirmed for your car. Check the product manual for video format and reverse-trigger wiring. Route the video cable securely, away from moving parts and sharp edges, and test that the image appears when reverse is selected while the vehicle is stationary. Do not assume an original factory screen accepts a generic camera signal.
OBD-II information
Hudiy documents OBD-II communication alongside features such as calls, media, CarPlay, Android Auto and camera support. It is an option for experienced builders, but compatibility depends on hardware and software; the available product information does not establish a universal reader recommendation. Treat diagnostic codes as clues to investigate, not as a definitive repair diagnosis.

Phone and display charging
A suitable 12V USB-C charger can power a phone or display, but confirm its output suits the device. Check whether the vehicle’s outlet stays live after the ignition is off; a connected device can drain the battery if power remains available.
Plan the installation and test before reassembling
- Photograph the original connections and identify the radio, amplifier and camera connectors before disconnecting anything.
- Confirm exact fitment and gather the required dash kit, wiring harness, antenna adapter and steering-wheel-control interface, if applicable.
- Bench-test the new equipment before reinstalling the trim. Check power, audio, phone pairing, microphone, steering-wheel controls and camera operation.
- Route cables away from pedals, airbags and sharp edges. Secure loose wiring and relieve strain on connectors.
- While parked, test wired and wireless phone connections. If CarPlay does not activate, Apple advises checking Siri, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, the USB cable for wired setups, and vehicle firmware (Apple’s CarPlay setup guidance; Apple’s CarPlay troubleshooting guidance).
- In a safe stationary location, verify reverse-camera switching and confirm the original controls still work.
- Reassemble the trim only after every function you need has passed a parked test.
Choose the audio connection with the trade-offs in mind
FM transmission avoids tapping into the stereo, but can be less dependable where local stations cause interference. AUX provides a direct wired audio connection when available; Bluetooth avoids a cable but adds a wireless link. Wireless phone connections can also add latency, while wired USB or AUX may be more stable where supported. These are practical trade-offs, not comparative performance measurements for every car or device.
Keep the installation safe and usable
- Position any screen within a sensible sightline without blocking the road view, airbags or vehicle controls.
- Set navigation and playlists before moving; do not handle or configure the display while driving.
- Secure power and signal cables so they cannot catch on pedals, interfere with airbags or become loose.
- Check that the factory radio, steering-wheel controls and camera still behave as expected after installation.
For advanced builders: a custom infotainment platform
Hudiy offers a more involved DIY route using Raspberry Pi or x86 Linux, with documented support for OBD-II, calls, media, CarPlay, Android Auto and cameras (Hudiy). This is better suited to builders prepared to handle hardware setup, integration and troubleshooting than to someone seeking a simple plug-in upgrade.
