There is no universal winner in the diesel-versus-gas truck decision. Diesel engines usually travel farther on a gallon and can be advantageous for frequent heavy towing, while gasoline trucks generally avoid diesel-specific emissions equipment and may cost less to service. The right choice depends on your exact truck configuration, annual mileage, trailer weights, local fuel prices, and how long you will own it.

Diesel vs. gas truck: the short answer

Choose a diesel when you regularly tow heavy loads, accumulate high annual mileage, or need the low-speed torque and engine-braking equipment offered by a particular diesel powertrain. Choose gasoline when most driving is unloaded, towing is occasional or moderate, annual mileage is lower, or you want to avoid diesel exhaust-fluid and particulate-filter systems.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That rule is only a starting point. A diesel’s higher miles per gallon does not automatically produce a lower fuel bill because diesel fuel has generally cost more per gallon than regular gasoline in the United States. A truck’s advertised maximum tow rating also does not tell you whether the truck can legally and safely carry your trailer’s tongue or pin weight after passengers and cargo are added. Maintenance differences depend on the engine, model year, service schedule, towing conditions, and local labor rates.

Fuel economy and annual fuel cost

Why diesels often use less fuel

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency explains that diesel fuel contains more energy per gallon than gasoline and that diesel engines generally achieve higher fuel economy. That is a technical tendency, not a guarantee that every diesel pickup beats every gasoline pickup in every test or driving situation. Aerodynamics, gearing, vehicle weight, tires, four-wheel drive, temperature, speed, payload, and trailer drag can overwhelm the engine’s theoretical advantage.

Use the EPA’s fueleconomy.gov database to compare the specific model year and drivetrain. Do not transfer a number from a different engine or body style. Chevrolet, for example, publishes an EPA-estimated 28 mpg highway and 23 mpg city for 2WD models equipped with the available 3.0L Duramax diesel in its Silverado light-duty lineup. That figure is not a heavy-duty rating, is not a towing result, and should not be applied to a four-wheel-drive truck, another engine, or a different model year.

Diesel usually costs more at the pump

U.S. Energy Information Administration data says on-highway diesel has generally been more expensive per gallon than regular-grade gasoline almost continuously since September 2004. EIA attributes the long-running difference to factors including distillate-fuel demand, the cost of producing and distributing lower-sulfur diesel, and diesel’s higher federal excise tax. Your region, season, taxes, and the date of purchase can produce a different spread, so use current local prices rather than a national average from another month.

The calculation that matters

Calculate each truck separately:

Annual fuel cost = annual miles ÷ actual miles per gallon × local price per gallon.

Use two sets of assumptions if your use is mixed:

  • Unloaded driving: highway and city fuel economy for commuting and normal errands.
  • Towing: a conservative estimate that reflects trailer weight, speed, hills, wind, cargo, and the number of miles you actually tow.

Multiply each fuel economy assumption by the miles driven in that condition, then add the results. A truck that saves fuel while empty may not recover its higher diesel price when it spends only a few weekends each year towing. Conversely, a high-mileage owner who tows frequently may value the diesel’s efficiency and torque even when the per-gallon price is higher.

A transparent example using your own inputs

Suppose you drive 12,000 miles unloaded and 3,000 miles towing. Enter the gasoline truck’s unloaded and towing mpg in one calculation and the diesel truck’s figures in another. Then enter the gasoline and diesel prices from the same local date. Do not combine a diesel’s highway mpg with a gasoline truck’s city miles, or use an advertised unloaded figure for towing miles.

Input Gasoline truck Diesel truck
Annual unloaded miles Use your odometer estimate Use the same miles
Unloaded fuel economy Exact model-year estimate or measured average Exact model-year estimate or measured average
Annual towing miles Use your towing log or estimate Use the same miles
Towing fuel economy Conservative estimate for your trailer Conservative estimate for your trailer
Fuel price Local regular gasoline price on a dated basis Local on-highway diesel price on the same date
Annual fuel cost Calculate miles ÷ mpg × price for each use case, then add Calculate miles ÷ mpg × price for each use case, then add

This calculation does not establish a payback period by itself. To calculate payback, add the actual purchase-price difference, financing cost, insurance difference, scheduled service, likely repairs, and your expected ownership period. No universal diesel premium or break-even mileage applies to every current pickup.

Towing: match the complete truck, not the headline number

Maximum tow rating is configuration-specific

Ford’s 2024 Super Duty towing guide publishes separate tables by engine and configuration. The maximum shown in an advertisement applies only to eligible combinations of engine, cab, bed length, axle ratio, drivetrain, wheels and tires, and towing equipment. Ford’s current 2026 Super Duty specifications likewise describe maximum available ratings tied to particular powertrains and optional packages. A truck sitting on a dealer’s lot may not qualify for the advertised maximum.

Before comparing a gas and diesel truck, record these details for both:

  • Engine and transmission
  • Two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive
  • Regular, extended, or crew cab
  • Bed length and wheelbase
  • Axle ratio
  • Factory tow package, hitch receiver, and trailer-brake equipment
  • Gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), gross combined weight rating (GCWR), and payload shown on the certification labels

Payload can limit you before tow rating

Chevrolet defines GCWR as the maximum combined weight of the loaded truck and loaded trailer. Occupants, tools, fuel, aftermarket equipment, and cargo reduce the capacity available for trailer weight. The trailer’s tongue weight for a bumper-pull trailer or pin weight for a fifth-wheel or gooseneck counts against the truck’s payload.

For example, a truck may have enough advertised tow capacity for a trailer but not enough payload for the trailer’s loaded tongue or pin weight after four passengers, a bed-mounted toolbox, a weight-distribution hitch, and camping gear are added. Use the payload figure on the actual truck’s door-jamb label, not a generic brochure number.

How to verify a towing match

  1. Weigh the trailer as you will travel. Include water, propane, batteries, food, tools, motorcycles, and personal gear. Use a certified public scale when possible.
  2. Determine tongue or pin weight. A scale reading or trailer manufacturer’s loaded estimate is more useful than an empty-trailer specification.
  3. Read the truck’s certification label. Record GVWR, payload, front- and rear-axle ratings, and tire limits.
  4. Account for people and equipment. Subtract passengers, cargo, hitch hardware, bed accessories, and other added weight from payload.
  5. Check GCWR and the current towing guide. Confirm that the loaded truck and loaded trailer remain under the rating for that exact engine and configuration.
  6. Verify hitch and braking requirements. Match the receiver rating, weight-distribution requirements, trailer-brake controller, electrical connector, and state-law requirements to the trailer.

Where diesel can help when towing

Diesel engines commonly produce strong low-speed torque, which can make starting and maintaining speed with a heavy trailer easier. Ford’s 2024 Super Duty guide describes an engine-exhaust brake on the 6.7L Power Stroke diesel to help control speed on descents. That is a feature of the cited application, not proof that every diesel has a better braking outcome or that a diesel removes the need for correctly adjusted trailer brakes.

For occasional towing, a gasoline truck with the correct axle ratio, cooling equipment, transmission, and payload may meet your needs at lower complexity. For frequent heavy towing, examine grade performance, cooling capacity, transmission behavior, and the availability of an exhaust-brake mode in addition to the maximum tow number.

Maintenance differences you should budget for

There is no universal maintenance-price winner

There is no authoritative, apples-to-apples dollar total here for lifetime maintenance of otherwise identical gasoline and diesel pickups. Labor rates, oil capacity, service intervals, driving conditions, warranty coverage, and repair prices vary widely. Get written estimates for the exact trucks from a dealer or independent shop familiar with that engine, and use the applicable owner’s manual as the schedule.

Gasoline-truck service profile

A gasoline truck still needs scheduled oil and filter changes, inspections, tire and brake service, coolant service, transmission-fluid attention, and replacement of wear items. The interval may change for severe use such as frequent towing, dusty operation, short trips, or extreme temperatures. Confirm the severe-service definition in the manual rather than assuming the normal interval applies.

Diesel-specific systems and service

Most on-road diesel trucks sold since 2010 use diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to reduce nitrogen-oxide emissions, according to the EPA. DEF is a consumable that must be kept within the truck’s operating range. A low-DEF condition or SCR fault can trigger warnings and, in some circumstances, engine power or speed derates. Follow the dashboard warnings and the owner’s manual; do not treat a warning as a routine oil-change reminder.

Diesel fuel filtration is also critical. Water or contamination in the fuel can damage high-pressure injection components, so use the specified filter and draining or replacement procedure. A phrase such as “diesel fuel filter” is not enough to identify a compatible part: fitment depends on model year, engine, chassis, and sometimes production date.

Diesels also use a diesel particulate filter (DPF). The filter captures soot and periodically regenerates. Repeated short trips, idling, or low-load operation can prevent ideal regeneration conditions. The 2025 Ford Super Duty owner’s manual states that accumulated DPF ash can eventually require filter replacement at approximately 250,000 miles (400,000 km), with actual mileage varying by engine and operating conditions. That is a Ford manual example, not a universal interval for every diesel pickup.

Severe-service towing intervals

The 2025 Ford Super Duty manual gives a model-specific example of how towing can change maintenance. Under specified prolonged-trailer-towing conditions, rear-axle fluid service may be required every 30,000 miles when non-synthetic fluid is used; the guidance changes when the specified synthetic fluid is used. Read the fluid specification and conditional language together. Do not turn that example into a blanket 30,000-mile rule for every truck.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask the service department to identify which items are triggered by your use: engine oil, fuel filters, axle fluids, transmission fluid, transfer-case fluid, coolant, brake inspection, and emissions-system checks. Keep receipts and mileage records, especially if warranty coverage or resale value matters.

Purchase price, resale, and ownership horizon

A diesel often carries a higher transaction price, but the amount depends on the exact trim, incentives, availability, and market date. The evidence does not establish one universal purchase premium or resale percentage. Request same-day quotes for comparable gas and diesel trucks with the equipment you actually need, then compare the total financed amount rather than only the advertised payment.

Estimate how long you will keep the truck and how many miles you will drive. A buyer who trades after two years may not capture enough fuel savings to offset a purchase premium and additional service exposure. A buyer who keeps a truck for many years and tows commercially or recreationally every week may place more value on diesel torque, range, and heavy-duty equipment. Resale demand varies by region and buyer group, so treat any projected resale value as an assumption to test with local listings and dealer appraisals, not a guaranteed return.

Decision framework: which fuel fits your use?

Gasoline is usually the simpler fit when:

  • Most miles are unloaded commuting, errands, or light hauling.
  • You tow only occasionally or your trailer stays comfortably within the gasoline truck’s payload and GCWR limits.
  • Your annual mileage is modest and diesel fuel is substantially more expensive locally.
  • You prefer to avoid DEF replenishment, DPF regeneration behavior, and diesel-specific fuel filtration.
  • The gasoline truck offers the required cooling, axle ratio, hitch, and brake equipment.

Diesel deserves serious consideration when:

  • You tow a heavy trailer frequently and need the capability of a specific diesel configuration.
  • You drive enough annual miles for higher fuel economy to matter after diesel’s per-gallon premium.
  • You travel in sustained grades or carry heavy loads where diesel torque and an available exhaust brake are useful.
  • You can follow the diesel service schedule and accept DEF, SCR, DPF, and fuel-filter responsibilities.
  • You plan to keep the truck long enough to benefit from its capability rather than paying for unused equipment.

Common comparison mistakes—and how to avoid them

Using a light-duty diesel mpg claim for an HD truck

The Chevrolet 28/23 mpg example applies to an available 3.0L Duramax Silverado 2WD configuration. It is not evidence for a heavy-duty diesel, a four-wheel-drive model, or towing. Always match engine, drivetrain, body, and model year.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing maximum tow ratings from different configurations

A diesel crew-cab four-wheel-drive with a short bed may have a different rating from a two-wheel-drive regular-cab truck with a different axle ratio. Pull the exact row from the current manufacturer guide and confirm the truck’s labels.

Ignoring payload after calculating trailer weight

Tongue or pin weight, passengers, tools, bed caps, auxiliary fuel tanks, and hitch hardware all consume payload. A trailer that is below the headline tow number can still exceed payload or an axle rating.

Assuming diesel mpg guarantees cheaper ownership

Fuel cost is consumption multiplied by price. Diesel’s energy and efficiency advantages must be compared with the local diesel premium, purchase price, service, and ownership period.

Quoting a maintenance interval without its conditions

The Ford rear-axle and DPF examples apply to a specific 2025 manual and stated operating conditions. Use the manual for your model year, engine, fluid type, and towing pattern.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to collect before signing a purchase order

  • Vehicle identification number or complete build sheet for each candidate truck
  • Current model-year towing guide and owner’s manual
  • Door-jamb payload and axle-rating labels
  • Loaded trailer weight and measured tongue or pin weight
  • Annual unloaded and towing mileage estimates
  • Dated local gasoline and diesel prices
  • Out-the-door purchase quotes, financing terms, insurance estimates, and trade-in values
  • Maintenance schedule and written service estimates for normal and severe use
  • Confirmation of DEF, DPF, fuel-filter, hitch, brake-controller, and warranty requirements

Bottom line for gas vs. diesel

Buy the gasoline truck if it satisfies your actual payload, GCWR, hitch, and braking requirements and your driving is mostly unloaded or only occasionally involves a trailer. Buy the diesel when frequent heavy towing, high annual mileage, sustained grades, or a needed diesel-specific feature justifies the higher fuel-system and emissions-system complexity. The sound decision comes from a configuration-level weight check and a local annual-cost calculation—not from the diesel or gasoline label alone.
