The U.S. average on-highway diesel price reached $6.529 per gallon for the week of September 21, 2026, then eased to $6.382 for the week of September 28. Those are dated national weekly averages, not a quote for your local station. Use the price as a reason to compare vehicles, not as a purchase decision: start with their window stickers, then calculate costs using your mileage, local energy prices and actual charging options.
What the $6.53 diesel figure means
The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s weekly on-highway diesel series reports a national average of $6.529 per gallon for the week of September 21, 2026, including taxes. Its next weekly observation was $6.382 for September 28. The price therefore describes a particular week, not what every driver paid or what diesel costs now. Check the EIA weekly diesel price series for the latest available figure before relying on it.
A high pump price can make fuel savings more valuable, but it cannot by itself tell you whether an EV is the cheaper choice. That depends on the specific vehicles, how far you drive, your local diesel and electricity rates, and whether you can charge conveniently.
How to compare the window stickers
Use the sticker to compare standardized efficiency information, then treat its cost figures as a common reference point—not a personalized bill forecast. EPA explains the label’s fuel economy and cost fields in its text version of the electric vehicle label.
#1 Best Overall
- 8.5 х 1.25 in. size, 1 decal included.
- High quality vinyl material.
- Great on all smooth surfaces: laptops, computers, trackpads / keyboards, water bottles, Hydro Flasks, water bottles, scrapbooks, mirrors, macbooks, notebooks, journals, luggage, skateboards, snowboards, bicycles, cars, and more.
- Intended for indoor or outdoor use. Will last for years!
- Made in the USA. Easy to apply.
For a diesel vehicle
- Compare city, highway and combined MPG. EPA says the combined MPG figure is the most prominent value for quick comparisons across vehicles.
- Note the estimated annual fuel cost and five-year comparison with an average new vehicle, then check the assumptions behind those figures.
For an electric vehicle
- Read both MPGe and electricity consumption in kilowatt-hours per 100 miles. MPGe is an energy-equivalent measure: it compares EV travel with the amount of fuel containing the energy in one gallon of gasoline. It does not mean the EV uses gasoline, or that MPGe is the rate you will pay for electricity.
- Check the estimated annual fuel cost, range and charging-time information. Range and charging time help you judge practical fit; neither tells you your household’s actual charging cost.
Check how the sticker’s assumptions differ from yours
EPA’s guidance for 2026 model-year labels specifies diesel at $3.60 per gallon and electricity at $0.17 per kilowatt-hour, with an assumed 15,000 miles of driving per year. Those are prescribed label inputs, not September 2026 pump prices or a forecast of your utility bill. A label comparison is useful because vehicles are assessed on a consistent basis, but your own calculation should use your expected annual distance and local energy prices.
Why a small MPG gain may save less than you expect
MPG is not a linear measure of fuel consumed. EPA illustrates the difference over 1,000 miles: increasing efficiency from 10 to 15 MPG saves about 33 gallons, while increasing it from 30 to 35 MPG saves about 5 gallons. These are EPA examples, not a prediction of what a particular driver will save. The practical takeaway is to compare consumption and costs over the distance you actually drive, rather than treating an equal MPG increase as an equal fuel saving.

Make the comparison for your driving
- Choose the actual vehicles. Compare the diesel vehicle you would buy with the EV you would buy, rather than comparing a generic diesel with a generic electric car.
- Estimate annual miles. Use your own likely driving distance; the label’s 15,000-mile assumption may not match your use.
- Use local energy prices. Apply the diesel price you can actually buy at and the electricity rate available where you expect to charge.
- Check charging access. Consider whether home or workplace charging is available and convenient. A sticker’s range or charging-time figure does not establish what charging will cost or how easy it will be for you.
- Compare the ownership costs you can establish. Include purchase or transaction price alongside expected energy use over your intended ownership period. A complete total-cost comparison also needs vehicle-specific financing, insurance, maintenance, taxes and incentives; the sticker and cited fuel-price data do not settle those amounts for an individual buyer.
What the sticker cannot promise
EPA ratings are standardized estimates, not guarantees of real-world results. Actual fuel economy and emissions can vary with driving and maintenance, climate, road conditions, vehicle load and accessory use. For used vehicles, EPA says a label can be produced using the model year, make, model, engine and transmission; a label QR code can also personalize information using annual mileage, city-driving share and current fuel prices.
The label’s emissions rating is based on tailpipe CO2 and does not include emissions from producing fuel or electricity. For a broader emissions estimate, EPA points shoppers to its beyond-tailpipe emissions tool.
