Published estimates differ, Bugatti contests them, and the public sources cited here do not provide audited figures to establish an exact per-car loss.
What do the reported loss estimates say?
The figures are estimates attributed to outside analysts, not disclosures from Bugatti or Volkswagen. They also use different currencies and reporting dates, so they should not be treated as directly interchangeable.
| Estimate | What was reported | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| €4.6 million per Veyron | Sanford Bernstein automotive analyst Max Warburton’s estimate of Volkswagen’s loss for each car sold. | The Irish Times, 11 December 2013 |
| €4,951,000 per Veyron; €1.85 billion total | Bernstein estimates reported alongside a list price of about €1.43 million. The per-car and program totals are estimates, not Bugatti accounts. | ANSA, 2 October 2013 |
| $4 million to $6 million per Veyron | A range of independent analyst estimates. WIRED reported that Bugatti, which does not release financial information, contests the estimates. | WIRED, 2016 |
The dollar range includes losses above $5 million, which is the basis for the headline claim. It does not establish that every Veyron lost exactly that amount. The reports do not give a shared method for allocating development, manufacturing, and other program costs, and they do not reconcile their currencies or assumptions.
Why can’t the precise loss be confirmed?
None of the cited sources supplies an audited, public calculation of profit or loss per Veyron. The Irish Times noted that estimates of automakers’ losses could be conjectural because manufacturers are reluctant to discuss unsuccessful investments. WIRED likewise reported both that Bugatti contests the analyst estimates and that it does not release financial information.

There is also a basic accounting problem: a per-car figure depends on which costs are assigned to the car and how they are spread across a limited production run. The available reports do not offer enough common methodology to compare or reconcile the estimates numerically. The defensible conclusion is that outside analysts estimated losses of several million per car, not that Bugatti confirmed a precise amount.
What did the Veyron cost, and how many were made?
Price figures refer to different points in the Veyron’s life and should not be mistaken for one another. The Los Angeles Times reported a $1.25 million price before taxes for the Veyron 16.4 at its 2005 launch. In 2015, Bugatti gave an average price of €2.3 million including options for vehicles sold recently—a later average, not the original launch price.

Bugatti announced on 23 February 2015 that the 450th and final Veyron had been sold. The total comprised 300 coupes and 150 roadsters. The original Veyron 16.4 arrived in 2005, followed by the Grand Sport, Super Sport, and Grand Sport Vitesse.
Why pursue a car that analysts said lost money?
The technical brief was exceptionally ambitious
Bugatti’s stated brief called for more than 1,000 PS, a top speed above 400 km/h, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in under three seconds, and comfort suitable for normal road use. Bugatti described the development as a major technical challenge. At the final-car announcement, the company listed 1,200 PS, 1,500 Nm, a 0–100 km/h time of 2.5 seconds, and a record speed of 431.072 km/h.

Wolfgang Dürheimer, then President of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S., said: “The development of the Bugatti Veyron represented one of the greatest technical challenges ever in the automotive industry.”
Those targets help explain why the program demanded substantial engineering and development. The Los Angeles Times reported an estimated half-billion dollars in development costs in its 2005 launch coverage.

The car also served as a halo project
Launch coverage in the Los Angeles Times framed the Veyron as a Volkswagen crown-jewel and part of a Bugatti brand relaunch. WIRED later described it as a halo car intended to demonstrate Volkswagen’s technical capability and revive Bugatti’s standing. That is a reported rationale for the project, not evidence of a quantified marketing return that offsets any estimated loss.

What the headline does—and does not—mean
“Over $5 million for every Veyron” is a shorthand drawn from the upper part of a reported analyst range. Other reporting gives euro-denominated estimates, and no cited public company data verifies an exact loss per car. The Veyron’s limited run, demanding engineering targets, and brand ambitions explain why analysts framed it as an expensive halo program; they do not settle its final accounting.
