No, Toyota has not announced a company-wide deadline to phase out gas engines. The closest official deadline is a regional target from December 2, 2021. Toyota Motor Europe said it expected to be ready to achieve 100% CO2 reduction in all new-vehicle sales by 2035 in Western Europe, provided enough charging and hydrogen-refueling infrastructure and renewable-energy capacity exist by then. That is an emissions target for new vehicles in one region. It is not a pledge to stop selling vehicles with combustion engines, and it does not apply worldwide.
We could not tie the phrase “just announced” to a specific Toyota release dated within the past year. The most recent official statements we could date are Toyota’s 2023 global management policy announcement and its 2025 Integrated Report, and both continue to include engines in the company’s plans.
Why the headline doesn’t match what Toyota published
The word “deadline” can mean several different things, and the headline blends them. Toyota’s statements differ on four points: what is being targeted, where it applies, whether it is conditional, and which powertrains are included.

The 2021 Western Europe target, clause by clause
Toyota Motor Europe’s December 2, 2021 announcement is the source of the 2035 figure, and its wording matters. The company said:

“Moving beyond 2030, we expect to see further ZEV demand acceleration and Toyota will be ready to achieve 100% CO2 reduction in all new vehicles by 2035 in Western Europe, assuming that sufficient electric charging and hydrogen refueling infrastructures are in place by then, together with the renewable energy capacity increases that will be required.”
The official text attributes the statement to Toyota Motor Europe and does not name an individual executive. Three parts of it limit how far the target reaches:
- Region. The target covers Western Europe. The announcement does not set an equivalent date for North America, Asia or other markets.
- Condition. Toyota said it would be “ready” to hit the target if infrastructure and renewable energy were in place. It did not commit to hitting it regardless of those conditions.
- Scope. The target concerns CO2 reduction in new-vehicle sales. It does not say that every vehicle sold must be electric, and it does not mention a ban.
The same announcement set an interim goal. Toyota Motor Europe said the zero-emission vehicle sales mix in Western Europe was anticipated to be at least 50% by 2030, with the potential to rise if customer demand was higher. That is a minimum expectation for the mix, not a cap on other powertrains.

Toyota’s global targets measure fleet CO2, not engine sales
In its April 7, 2023 “New Management Policy & Direction Announcement,” Toyota Motor Corporation gave worldwide targets for the average CO2 emissions of vehicles sold:

These are averages across the whole fleet sold in a year. A manufacturer can meet an average-emissions target while still selling combustion-engine vehicles, as long as the average falls. The 2023 announcement also states the company’s approach to powertrains:
“We will continue to tailor electrification to the needs of customers and individual regions by drawing on the strengths and characteristics of each vehicle type.”

Gas engines remain part of Toyota’s plans
The multi-pathway powertrain strategy
Toyota Europe’s current overview lists a range of options rather than a single end point. It includes battery-electric vehicles (BEV), plug-in hybrids (PHEV), hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), combustion engines optimized for carbon-neutral fuels, hydrogen engines and fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEV). Engines appear on that list as an active option, not a legacy category.
New inline-four engines in the 2025 Integrated Report
Toyota’s Integrated Report 2025 discusses new 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engines and how they fit into electrified powertrains. The report presents them as part of the company’s hybrid and electrification lineup, not as a phase-out plan.

Toyota’s 2024 report, Toyota’s Views on Climate Public Policies 2024, describes engine development carried out with Subaru and Mazda. The report says these engines are designed to be compatible with carbon-neutral fuels.

What this means if you’re considering a Toyota BEV
Toyota describes battery-electric vehicles as replacing conventional gas engines with battery-powered motors, charged by plugging in. For model-year 2026 Toyota BEVs sold in the United States, Toyota USA’s “Beyond Zero Vision” page lists a NACS charging port and includes separate CCS1 and J1772 adapters. A Level 2 home charger is a sensible optional purchase for someone who chooses a BEV, but a charger is a product decision for that buyer. It does not indicate that Toyota is ending its gas-engine lineup.
How to check a “phase-out deadline” headline
Use these checks before accepting a headline that says a manufacturer is ending gas cars:

- Find the original company release and its date. Headlines often reuse older statements.
- Identify the region. A Western Europe target does not apply to a US or Japanese lineup.
- Check whether the target measures sales, fleet-average emissions or a specific model range.
- Look for conditions such as infrastructure or energy assumptions.
- Check the list of powertrains. If engines still appear in the company’s own strategy documents, a complete phase-out has not been announced.
