The event’s official investigation found no signs of mechanical failure and said footage appeared to show Dunne highsiding in the last turn before the finish line. His Ducati Streetfighter V4 Prototype was recorded as a DNF.
What happened in the final turn
The crash happened on the morning of June 30, 2019, during the 97th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. In its accident information published July 2, 2019, the PPIHC Race Director and Race Safety Team said they inspected Dunne’s motorcycle and found no signs of mechanical failure. After reviewing footage, they said it appeared he highsided as he entered the last turn before the finish line.
That is the extent of the official account in the reviewed materials. They do not publish a crash speed, a measured road defect, or a more detailed technical reconstruction, so a more specific physical cause should not be stated as fact.
The official 2019 result
The official overall-results sheet, posted July 1, 2019, records Dunne in Exhibition Powersport on a 2019 Ducati Streetfighter V4 Prototype with a DNF. It does not assign him a finishing position or an official race time.

Vahsholtz’s second-place division finish was a separate Ducati result; it was not Dunne’s result. The event’s competitor information dates the 97th running to Sunday, June 30, with the awards ceremony scheduled for July 1.
Ducati and Pikes Peak mourned Dunne
PPIHC and Ducati North America released a joint statement on the day of the crash. Ducati North America CEO Jason Chinnock said: “There are no words to describe our shock and sadness. Carlin was part of our family and one of the most genuine and kind men we have ever known. His spirit for this event and love of motorcycling will be remembered forever as his passing leaves a hole in our hearts.”

PPIHC Executive Director Megan Leatham likewise remembered Dunne as a friend and one of the greatest competitors at the mountain. The organization’s 2020 tribute records that he had four Pikes Peak titles.

Dunne was the first racer to break the motorcycle ten-minute mark at Pikes Peak, according to the PPIHC tribute. He did it in 2012 on a Ducati Multistrada, winning with a time of 9:52.819. The tribute says he became King of the Mountain the following year on an electric motorcycle.

In a statement dated February 25, 2019 and quoted in the tribute, Dunne described the tension of racing at the summit: “To me adrenaline is both friend and foe, it can heighten your senses but it can also cause you to lose your cool.
