Oldsmobile rated the 1970 442 W-30’s 455-cubic-inch V8 at 370 horsepower. Claims that the engine actually made more—sometimes more than 400 horsepower—remain unproven by the evidence available here: the factory figure is documented, but no traceable, comparable test establishes a higher stock output.
What horsepower did Oldsmobile claim?
General Motors Heritage lists the 1970 442 W-30’s 455 CID V8 at 370 horsepower. GM Heritage’s 1970 Oldsmobile 442 page also describes the W-30 package as including forced-air induction, a special air cleaner, an aluminum intake manifold and a fiberglass hood.
Classics on Autotrader gives the standard 1970 442 455 a 365-horsepower rating and the W-30 a 370-horsepower rating. That five-horsepower difference is striking alongside the W-30’s added hardware, but the ratings alone do not show how much power either engine produced on a test stand. AutoTrader’s Oldsmobile 442 history characterizes the rating as conservative.
Does the evidence prove the W-30 made more than 370 horsepower?
No precise higher figure is established here. A recent Muscle Car Fan article claims output above 400 horsepower, but the page does not provide traceable dyno sheets or enough test details to verify that number. The article’s over-400-horsepower claim should therefore be treated as an assertion, not a confirmed measurement of a stock 1970 W-30.

To compare an advertised rating with a measured result, the evidence would need to specify whether horsepower is gross or net, whether it came from an engine or chassis dyno, and whether the engine was stock or modified. It would also need to identify the configuration and test conditions. The sources here do not provide a like-for-like measurement resolving those variables.
What do the period performance figures tell us?
AutoTrader reports that Motor Trend recorded 0–60 mph in 6.6 seconds and a quarter-mile in 14.8 seconds at 95 mph in a period test. Those are results for a tested car, not a direct measurement of engine horsepower. Acceleration depends on factors including transmission, axle ratio, tires, traction, vehicle condition and test method; the times cannot be converted into an exact engine output without further data.

Which 442 does the rating describe?
The 370-horsepower figure applies to the 1970 442 W-30, not every Oldsmobile 442. AutoTrader distinguishes the W-30’s 370-horsepower rating from the standard 442 455’s 365-horsepower rating. GM Heritage also reports 1,542 1970 W-30 cars with automatic transmission; that is a count for that transmission-specific variant, not total W-30 production.
The most defensible answer is that Oldsmobile’s documented rating for the 1970 W-30 was 370 horsepower, while the claim that a stock example made more—especially more than 400—has not been verified by the cited measurement evidence.
