The next day, board chair Robyn Denholm denied that the board had contacted recruitment firms to start a CEO search. The public record establishes that the report and denial occurred, but does not independently settle whether the alleged contacts took place.
What the Wall Street Journal reported
As summarized by contemporaneous accounts, the Journal reported that Tesla board members had approached executive-search firms about finding a possible successor to Musk. The reporting linked the alleged activity to Musk spending time on the Trump administration’s government-efficiency work and to board requests that he devote more time to Tesla. Those details are the Journal’s reported account, not independently verified findings in the cited coverage. The Guardian’s May 1 account and Reuters’ report carried by Investing.com describe the dispute.
How Tesla and Musk responded
On May 1, Denholm said the report was “absolutely false” and that the board had not contacted recruitment firms to initiate a CEO search. In a statement carried on Tesla’s social account, she added: “The CEO of Tesla is Elon Musk and the Board is highly confident in his ability to continue executing on the exciting growth plan ahead.” Her statement is Tesla’s public denial; it does not by itself resolve what contacts, if any, occurred.
Musk also attacked the article. The Guardian reported that he called it a “DELIBERATELY FALSE ARTICLE” and described publication without an unequivocal prior denial as “an EXTREMELY BAD BREACH OF ETHICS.” Those are Musk’s allegations about the story and its publication, not independent findings about the Journal’s reporting process.

What Tesla’s succession disclosures do—and don’t—show
Tesla’s 2025 proxy materials describe succession planning as an ongoing board governance responsibility and express confidence in Musk. That routine planning is not confirmation that board members made the specific outreach alleged in the Journal’s report. The distinction matters: a company can plan for leadership continuity without conducting a search for a current CEO’s replacement.
For context, Tesla’s 2025 proxy statement and Tesla Investor Relations proxy document discuss succession planning and the board’s governance framework. They provide context about standard oversight, not a direct answer to whether the reported 2025 contacts happened.

What Tesla’s later CEO filing establishes
Tesla’s 2026 annual filing identifies Musk as the company’s CEO and says he has held the role since October 2008. That later status shows he remained CEO as of the filing; it does not establish whether the reported search-firm outreach occurred in 2025. The 2026 annual filing addresses his role, not the truth of the earlier allegation.

The answer to “Did Tesla’s board look for a replacement for Elon Musk?” remains disputed in the available accounts. The Journal reported outreach to search firms; Denholm denied that the board initiated a CEO search. Anonymous-source reporting and a public company chair’s denial are different forms of evidence, and the cited sources do not independently adjudicate the underlying contacts.
