But the evidence does not show that Musk alone caused the declines. Tesla’s Q2 2026 deliveries then rose 25% year over year, changing the near-term picture without resolving questions about margins and spending.
Why investors were concerned about Tesla sales
The concern arose against two consecutive annual delivery declines. In March 2026, analysts were lowering their estimates, and some expected Tesla’s deliveries to fall for a third straight year. Reuters reported that consensus growth estimates had been cut to about 3.8%, from 8.2% in January. Those were forecasts at the time, not final results. Reuters’ March 11, 2026 report quoted Morningstar analyst Seth Goldstein predicting a third consecutive decline based on weakness in two of Tesla’s three largest markets.
Several explanations were cited, rather than a single proven cause: backlash linked to Musk’s political activity, intensifying competition, the end of U.S. EV tax credits, an aging vehicle lineup, and weak uptake of lower-priced stripped-down models. AutoForecast Solutions’ Sam Fiorani argued that updates to the Model 3 and Model Y were not radical enough to win back market share against newer, differently styled competitors. These are attributed assessments; the available figures do not isolate how much of the sales change came from Musk’s actions, or from any one factor.
What changed in Q2 2026
Tesla delivered 480,126 vehicles in Q2 2026, compared with 384,122 in Q2 2025—a 25% year-over-year increase, according to the Associated Press. The result also exceeded the 401,000 deliveries analysts expected, as reported by AP. This rebound means the March forecast of a third annual decline should be read as a forecast that preceded the quarter’s results, not as a description of the latest delivery trend. The aggregate figure does not establish that demand recovered in every country. AP did not provide a country-by-country breakdown in its account, and one quarter’s deliveries cannot settle the full-year outlook.
Deliveries are only one part of Tesla’s financial picture
Tesla itself cautions that deliveries and storage deployments are only two measures of performance and should not be relied on as an indicator of quarterly financial results. The company’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q gives investors a broader set of figures to weigh alongside the delivery rebound. Tesla, Inc. Q2 2026 Form 10-Q

| Measure | Q2 2026 result | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Deliveries | 480,126, up 25% year over year | More vehicles were delivered than in Q2 2025; the figure is not a standalone measure of profit or cash generation. |
| Automotive sales revenue | Up $4.22 billion, or 27%, year over year | Tesla attributed the increase primarily to approximately 25% more cash deliveries. |
| Automotive gross margin | 16.9%, versus 17.2% in Q2 2025 | Revenue growth did not translate into a higher automotive gross-margin percentage. |
| Research and development expense | $2.371 billion, up 49% year over year | Tesla said the increase was primarily related to AI and other programs and stock-based compensation. |
| 2026 capital expenditure outlook | More than $25 billion | Tesla cited AI initiatives, compute infrastructure, data centers, manufacturing and R&D facilities, and company-operated assets. |
The six-month comparison also needs context: Tesla reported automotive sales revenue up $6.77 billion, or 24%, for the six months ended June 30, 2026, and said the comparison partly reflected factories being taken down together for the Model Y changeover in the prior period. This helps explain why a year-over-year revenue increase should not automatically be read as a simple measure of underlying demand growth.
