The system first appeared on the Japanese-market Rebel 250 E-Clutch variants announced in January 2025; Honda later announced a separate CL250 E-Clutch scrambler-style model. It may reduce the need to coordinate a clutch lever, but Honda has not published evidence quantifying effects on beginner learning, safety, or riding outcomes.
Which 250cc Hondas have E-Clutch?
Honda announced the Rebel 250 E-Clutch and Rebel 250 S Edition E-Clutch on January 17, 2025, with Japanese release scheduled for March 13, 2025. The announcement also noted updates to the base Rebel 250’s handlebar shape and seat material. These dates and models refer to Japan; check Honda’s local lineup or an authorized dealer for availability in another market. Honda’s January 2025 announcement.
In September 2025, Honda announced a CL250 E-Clutch, scheduled for release in Japan on October 24, 2025. It is a distinct scrambler-style motorcycle, not another Rebel trim. Honda’s CL250 announcement.
What does Honda E-Clutch do?
The system electronically controls the clutch for starts and gear changes, so the rider does not need to operate the clutch lever for those actions. The rider still shifts using the pedal: E-Clutch is not a fully automatic transmission and does not eliminate gear selection. Honda says operating the clutch lever temporarily disables automated control, but the system cannot be disabled continuously. Honda’s Japanese Rebel 250 page.

Honda described its system in 2023 as enabling smooth starts and gear shifts without the rider operating the clutch lever, by automatically controlling the clutch of a multi-gear manual transmission. That is Honda’s description of its technology, not independent evidence of a measured rider benefit. Honda’s 2023 E-Clutch announcement.
Does E-Clutch mean you can ride without using a clutch lever?
For starting and shifting, the system takes over clutch operation; the rider still changes gears with the pedal. That distinction may appeal to someone learning a manual motorcycle who finds clutch coordination difficult. However, the available Honda information does not quantify whether E-Clutch improves learning, reduces stalls, or makes riding safer. Treat those as possible reasons to consider the feature, not established results.

Rebel 250 E-Clutch and CL250 E-Clutch specifications
The following are Honda-published Japanese-market figures. The two models have different formats and riding postures, so specifications alone do not establish comfort or beginner suitability.
| Specification | Rebel 250 E-Clutch | CL250 E-Clutch |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Rebel cruiser-style motorcycle | Scrambler-style motorcycle |
| Engine displacement | 249 cc | 249 cc |
| Maximum output | 19 kW (26 PS) at 9,500 rpm | 18 kW (24 PS) |
| Maximum torque | 22 N·m at 6,500 rpm | 23 N·m |

Honda lists the Rebel 250 with a 249 cc liquid-cooled, four-stroke, DOHC, four-valve single-cylinder engine. The Rebel’s fuel-consumption figures use two different Japanese test conditions: 47.0 km/L at a fixed 60 km/h with two occupants, and 34.9 km/L under the WMTC class 2-2 figure with one occupant. Neither figure is an independent real-world economy test. Honda’s Rebel 250 specifications. The CL250 figures are from Honda’s Japanese announcement. Honda’s CL250 announcement.

How to choose between the Rebel and CL
Start with the motorcycle format and fit that suit you, then consider the E-Clutch feature. The Rebel E-Clutch has a 690 mm seat height and weighs 174 kg; the CL250 E-Clutch has a 790 mm seat height and weighs 175 kg. Seat height and vehicle weight are useful comparison points, but they do not alone predict how a motorcycle will feel to a particular rider. If possible, sit on the exact model and ask a local Honda dealer about availability, specifications, and a suitable supervised test ride.
Honda also lists the standard Rebel 250 at 171 kg and the Rebel 250 S Edition E-Clutch at 175 kg. These are distinct Japanese-market variants; confirm the exact trim and model year when comparing listings. Honda’s Japanese Rebel 250 page.
