What Tesla’s safety figures do—and do not—show
Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) Evidence Dashboard, accessed in 2026, reports more than 230,000 fixed-route scenario tests across six European cities and an overall pass rate above 99%. The dashboard gives pass rates of 99.2% for intersections and 99.7% for crosswalks. These are Tesla-reported scenario-test results. They describe performance in those tests; they are not an independent study of real-world safety and do not verify this particular story.

Tesla also compares collision rates for FSD (Supervised) and manually driven Tesla vehicles in its Vehicle Safety Report. Tesla says the analysis uses vehicle telemetry, and that its U.S.-average calculation requires assumptions because government and company datasets differ in how they collect and classify information. Those comparisons should be read as Tesla’s analysis, with those methodological qualifications, not as independent confirmation of a specific near miss.
Why Tesla’s collision-counting rule matters
Tesla says it counts a collision as involving FSD (Supervised) if the system was active at any point during the five seconds before impact—even if the driver or system disengages shortly before the collision. The company explains: “This approach accounts for the time required for drivers to recognize potential hazards and take manual control of the vehicle.”

That rule defines how Tesla assigns collisions in its reported rates. It does not, by itself, show what caused a particular crash, prove that FSD prevented one, or identify what happened in the unidentified intersection story.
A separate Tesla emergency story is not this incident
In a June 16, 2026 customer story, Tesla said a driver’s son remotely rerouted the car to a hospital during a medical emergency, and that physicians later said the reroute likely helped save the driver’s life. That is a distinct account about remotely rerouting a car; it does not corroborate a mid-intersection FSD intervention.

What would verify the headline’s claim?
A reliable account would need to connect the original footage or incident report to the event and distinguish observable facts from interpretation. The most useful details would be:
- The original video and its date and location, with enough context to assess the road, signals, lane markings, and other traffic.
- The vehicle model and software version, plus evidence of whether FSD was engaged.
- Whether the driver took control, and when.
- Independent evidence that a collision or serious injury was actually imminent, rather than merely a startling or unusual maneuver.
NHTSA’s November 5, 2024 investigative material records examples of Tesla publicizing FSD anecdotes and statements, including accounts involving emergency travel and driving situations. It provides context for how such claims have appeared publicly, but it does not corroborate this particular event.
