David Spade was reported to have paid $900,000 for a restored, copper-toned 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona at Mecum’s Kissimmee auction in January 2015. That figure is a historical reported purchase price—not a current appraisal of the car.
What is known about Spade’s Daytona?
Us Weekly reported on January 29, 2015, that Spade bought the Hemi-powered car for $900,000 at Mecum Auctions in Kissimmee. The outlet attributed the transaction details to a source. TMZ also reported the purchase, and Hot Rod later described $900,000 as the previous Hemi Daytona auction record.
The car was described as restored and copper-colored. Us Weekly quoted Spade saying, “It’s too nice for me. I’m just going to wake up every morning and spray it with Armor All. Or I’ll just drive it to the Beverly Center and stand on the hood.” The remark was quoted by Allison Takeda in Us Weekly on January 29, 2015.
Was it the car from Joe Dirt?
No. The restored Daytona Spade reportedly bought was not the rusty car used in Joe Dirt. Us Weekly described the film car as rusted, missing headlights, and in need of paint. The two vehicles should not be treated as the same car.
Why is a 1969 Daytona collectible?
Hot Rod reported that 503 Dodge Daytonas were built for 1969. Of those, 70 had the 426 Hemi, and 22 of those Hemi cars were paired with the A833 four-speed manual. Those production figures explain the model’s rarity, but they do not determine the value of any one example.
How does the $900,000 report compare with other sales?
Later auction figures provide context, not an appraisal of Spade’s car. The vehicles, dates, and reported results differ:

| Car and sale | Reported result | What the figure establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Spade’s reported Hemi Daytona purchase, Mecum Kissimmee, January 2015 | $900,000 | Us Weekly reported the purchase price; Hot Rod later called it the previous Hemi Daytona auction record. |
| A different Hemi four-speed Daytona, Mecum Indianapolis, May 20, 2022 | $1.32 million | Hot Rod reported this sale as a new record at the time. |
| A different 1969 Hemi Daytona, Mecum Lot F167, 2017 | $750,000 | Mecum’s listing shows this result for another car, with different specifications and history. |
A fair comparison between Daytona sales depends on more than the model name: engine, transmission, originality and restoration history, mileage, documentation, provenance, and auction date can all differ. None of these separate results establishes what Spade’s specific car would sell for today.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Spade still the owner, and what is the car worth now?
The cited reports do not establish whether Spade still owns this specific Daytona, its current condition, or its present value. They also do not identify a VIN or exact lot number for his reported 2015 purchase. The $900,000 amount should therefore be read as a reported historical transaction, not a current valuation.
