Yes—Reuters reported on April 7, 2025, that Audi was holding vehicles arriving at U.S. ports after April 2 and had told dealers it was freezing shipments from that date until further notice. The report linked the move to the 25% auto-import tariff announced April 2, 2025. It did not establish that Audi was the “second” major automaker to take such action, or whether the freeze continued afterward.
What Audi reportedly did
Reuters, in a report republished by Yahoo Autos on April 7, 2025, said Audi was holding cars that had arrived at U.S. ports after April 2 while it assessed the effect of the new duties. According to an Audi spokesperson cited by Reuters, the company had also sent dealers a memo freezing shipments from April 2 until further notice. Reuters reporting republished by Yahoo Autos.
Those were two distinct parts of the reported response: cars already at U.S. ports were being held, while future shipments were frozen. A port hold is not the same as a stoppage of vehicles already in U.S. dealer or company inventory.
Why tariffs were involved
Reuters connected the action to the 25% tariff on auto imports announced by the Trump administration on April 2, 2025. The report described Audi’s response as a reaction to uncertainty about the duties’ effects. The 25% figure refers to the tariff rate reported at that time; it does not establish the current tariff rate or policy.

Where Audi’s U.S. models were built
Reuters reported that Audi’s best-selling U.S. model, the Q5, was produced in Mexico, while the rest of its U.S. lineup came from Europe or elsewhere. That range of production origins meant the company’s U.S.-bound vehicles were exposed to import tariffs across multiple sourcing locations. What later Audi statements establish
Audi’s January 14, 2026 release said U.S. tariff policy affected the automotive sector and shaped consumer behavior during 2025. Audi reported more than 1.6 million worldwide deliveries in 2025, down approximately 3% year over year, and Sales and Marketing board member Marco Schubert said, “Our product initiative is hitting the road, and deliveries are gradually reflecting this.” The release discusses broader business conditions, not whether the specific 2025 U.S. shipping freeze remained in place. What the reported inventory figure refers to
Reuters also cited a Volkswagen spokesperson who said Volkswagen-brand vehicles in U.S. inventory totaled around 37,000, enough for approximately two months of sales.
