Use the exact automatic-transmission-fluid specification in your vehicle or transmission manual. A vehicle that calls for GM DEXRON-VI needs DEXRON-VI; a vehicle that calls for Ford MERCON LV needs MERCON LV. The names are separate original-equipment specifications, even though both are low-viscosity fluids.
A bottle can serve either application only when it explicitly lists both DEXRON-VI and MERCON LV approvals and your vehicle documentation permits that specification. Do not choose by the words “low viscosity,” “multi-vehicle,” or the vehicle make alone.

What DEXRON-VI and MERCON LV actually are
Automatic-transmission fluid is engineered around a transmission’s clutch materials, hydraulic controls, seals, friction behavior, oxidation resistance and viscosity range. The specification on the service schedule is therefore an engineering requirement, not merely a brand name or a color code.
DEXRON-VI: General Motors’ specification
DEXRON-VI is a General Motors automatic-transmission-fluid specification. GM owner manuals assign it to particular transmissions and model years. For example, the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado manual lists DEXRON-VI for its six-speed automatic transmission. The same manual assigns different fluids to newer transmission families: DEXRON-HP for an eight-speed unit and DEXRON ULV for a ten-speed unit.

That distinction matters when two vehicles use the same engine or share a model name. “GM transmission” does not automatically mean DEXRON-VI; the transmission generation determines the required fluid.
MERCON LV: Ford’s low-viscosity specification
MERCON LV is Ford’s low-viscosity automatic-transmission-fluid specification. Ford lists Motorcraft MERCON LV XT-10-QLVC, specification WSS-M2C938-A, for transmissions that require MERCON LV. Ford’s owner-manual language is explicit: “Only use MERCON LV transmission fluid for automatic transmissions that require MERCON LV transmission fluid. The use of any other fluid could cause transmission damage.”
Ford also states, “Use fluid that meets the defined specification and viscosity grade.” The specification and the viscosity grade must be satisfied together; a fluid that merely feels thin or is advertised as low-viscosity is not automatically compliant.

DEXRON-VI and MERCON LV were developed by different manufacturers with their own testing, friction requirements and licensing systems. Their low-viscosity positioning describes one property, not complete chemical or performance identity. There is no basis for calling Dexron 6 and Mercon LV the same fluid, and neither name is a universal substitute for the other.

How to find the correct ATF for your vehicle
The reliable method is to identify the transmission and then match its written specification. Use this sequence rather than selecting fluid from a parts-store lookup alone.
1. Record the vehicle and transmission details
- Write down the model year, make, model and engine.
- Identify the transmission, including the number of speeds if the information is available. A six-speed, eight-speed and ten-speed automatic may require different fluids in the same model line.
- Note whether the transmission is a conventional automatic, a continuously variable transmission (CVT) or a dual-clutch transmission (DCT). CVTs and DCTs normally have their own specifications.
2. Read the owner manual’s fluid specification
Look for a section titled “Fluids and lubricants,” “Capacities and specifications,” or “Transmission fluid.” Copy the specification exactly, including punctuation and suffixes. A listing for DEXRON-HP, DEXRON ULV or MERCON ULV is not interchangeable with a listing for DEXRON-VI or MERCON LV merely because all are automatic-transmission fluids.

If the manual covers several transmissions, use the table row that matches your engine and transmission. Do not use a fluid listed for another powertrain in the same book.
3. Verify unclear applications on the transmission or service information
Some vehicles have a transmission identification label or a service-information entry that resolves an ambiguous manual. Confirm the code and specification before buying fluid. If the manual and a generic online catalog disagree, treat the vehicle manufacturer’s documentation as the controlling source and have a qualified transmission shop verify the application.
4. Match the complete label, not a marketing phrase
The container should name the required specification, such as “DEXRON-VI” or “MERCON LV.” Prefer a package that states an OEM license or approval where applicable. “Multi-vehicle ATF,” “fuel-saving ATF,” and “low-viscosity ATF” are categories, not proof that the product meets your transmission’s specification.
5. Follow the specified filling procedure
Use the manual’s level-check temperature, fill port, measurement method and service sequence. A transmission may require a level check with the engine running, a particular fluid temperature, or a scan-tool reading. Capacity depends on the transmission and on whether the service is a drain-and-fill or a completely dry fill.
Can you use MERCON LV instead of DEXRON-VI?
Not by default. A bottle labeled only MERCON LV is not established as a replacement for a vehicle that calls for DEXRON-VI. Conversely, a bottle labeled only DEXRON-VI is not established as a replacement for a MERCON LV application.

When one product can cover both specifications
A product may be suitable for either type of application when its current package explicitly lists both DEXRON-VI and MERCON LV approvals or licenses. That dual listing is evidence that the manufacturer has formulated and documented the fluid against both specifications. You must still confirm that your manual calls for one of those two specifications and that no vehicle-specific restriction applies.

Do not infer dual approval from a product’s name, a seller’s search filter or an old photograph of a bottle. Read the label and the manufacturer’s current technical information for the exact product and formulation.
When a dual-labeled product is not enough
If the vehicle requires DEXRON-HP, DEXRON ULV, MERCON ULV or another named fluid, a DEXRON-VI/MERCON LV product does not satisfy that requirement merely because it carries two approvals. The transmission specification always wins over a broader “multi-vehicle” claim.
Can you mix DEXRON-VI and MERCON LV?
Do not intentionally mix them simply because both are low-viscosity fluids. The available manufacturer statements do not establish a universal safe mixing percentage, a harmless top-off quantity or one flush interval that applies to every transmission.

- Stop adding fluid and record exactly what product and approximate quantity went into the transmission.
- Do not assume the vehicle is safe to drive based on the absence of an immediate warning light or shift problem.
- Call a dealer or qualified transmission specialist with the vehicle identification, transmission type, specified fluid and product label information.
- Follow the vehicle-specific recommendation. It may involve checking the level, draining and refilling, or a more extensive service, depending on the amount and the transmission.
- After service, verify the level using the manufacturer’s stated temperature and procedure; overfilling can create a separate operating problem.
A small accidental top-off is not automatically proof of damage, but it is also not a universal guarantee of harmlessness. Only a vehicle-specific assessment can account for the amount, operating time and transmission design.
GM transmission generations show why the application matters
The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado owner manual provides a clear example of specification changes within one vehicle family:

The lesson is broader than that model: the fluid follows the transmission design. A vehicle make, engine family or transmission speed count by itself is not a fluid specification; it is an identification clue that must be confirmed in the manual.

Label and licensing checks before you buy
- Exact wording: Find DEXRON-VI or MERCON LV printed on the bottle. If your manual names another specification, find that exact name instead.
- Approval or license statement: A specific OEM approval is stronger evidence than “recommended for” language. Keep the container or a photograph of its label for your service records.
- Current formulation: Packaging and approvals can change. Verify the current product information rather than relying on a retailer image or an old forum post.
- Fluid type: Confirm that the product is for a conventional automatic transmission. CVT and DCT fluids are separate categories unless the manufacturer explicitly says otherwise.
- Quantity: Buy enough for the documented procedure, allowing for the vehicle’s specified drain-and-fill amount rather than assuming the dry-fill capacity.
Capacity, drain-and-fill and dry-fill differences
Transmission capacity is not one universal number. A drain-and-fill replaces only the fluid that leaves through the drain or pan; fluid remains in the torque converter, cooler and passages. A dry-fill figure describes a completely empty transmission after assembly or overhaul and is usually much larger.

That number is vehicle-specific, not a target for every MERCON LV transmission and not a substitute for the service table in your own manual.
Use the manufacturer’s fill quantity as a starting point, then set the final level by its specified procedure. Pouring in the full dry-fill number during an ordinary drain-and-fill can overfill the unit. Conversely, stopping at the amount drained can leave a transmission low if it was already below specification.
Common selection mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by vehicle make alone
Ford vehicles do not all use MERCON LV, and GM vehicles do not all use DEXRON-VI. Transmission generation, model year and service specification control the decision.
Choosing by “low viscosity” alone
Low viscosity describes a performance characteristic. It does not establish the friction, durability or licensing requirements of either OEM specification.
Assuming every DEXRON fluid is equivalent
DEXRON-VI, DEXRON-HP and DEXRON ULV have distinct applications in GM documentation. Treat each as a separate requirement unless the manual expressly states otherwise.

Using a generic “multi-vehicle” claim as authorization
A broad claim can cover several applications, but only the exact specification and approval language confirm coverage. If the label does not name the specification your manual requires, choose another product or obtain written confirmation from the manufacturer.
Applying conventional-ATF advice to a CVT or DCT
CVTs and DCTs use different clutches, belts, pulleys or gearsets and often require proprietary fluids. A conventional ATF label does not automatically cover them.
Ignoring the level-check procedure
Incorrect temperature, an engine that is off when it should be running, or an unlevel vehicle can produce a false level. Follow the manual exactly, and do not treat a fluid change as complete until the level has been verified.

Examples of correct decisions
GM six-speed calling for DEXRON-VI
Buy a product whose label explicitly states DEXRON-VI approval or licensing. A dual-labeled DEXRON-VI/MERCON LV product can also be used if the label is current and the application has no additional restriction.
Ford transmission calling for MERCON LV
Use a product that explicitly meets MERCON LV, such as the Ford-listed Motorcraft MERCON LV fluid or another product with the documented specification. Do not replace it with a DEXRON-VI-only bottle.
GM eight-speed or ten-speed transmission
Return to the manual and obtain DEXRON-HP or DEXRON ULV, respectively, when those are the listed fluids. A DEXRON-VI/MERCON LV product is not a substitute for either newer GM specification.
Unclear or conflicting information
Pause the purchase and provide the vehicle identification and transmission code to a dealer or qualified transmission specialist. A short verification is less costly than correcting an incorrect fluid service.
