Defender OCTA Black vs 90 V8: The Key Differences Before You Buy

Defender OCTA Black and Defender 90 V8 are different performance configurations. Compare the supercharged 525 PS 90 with OCTA’s twin-turbo mild-hybrid setup, claimed figures, specialized hardware and Black styling before checking local availability.

Defender OCTA Black and Defender 90 V8 are not confirmed as a same-year, same-body-style trim comparison. Land Rover’s current material describes the 90 V8 as a 525 PS supercharged petrol V8, while OCTA uses a twin-turbo V8 with a 48V mild-hybrid system and is advertised at up to 635 PS. OCTA Black is primarily a blacked-out appearance and equipment treatment; the reviewed specifications do not establish a separate power increase for the Black edition. Availability, equipment, testing figures and even body-style combinations can vary by country and model year, so confirm the exact vehicle on a local specification sheet before ordering.

The useful question is therefore not simply “which is faster?” It is whether you want the 90 V8’s traditional supercharged character and compact five-seat Defender format, or OCTA’s newer performance hardware, claimed 4.0-second acceleration and more specialized suspension and braking systems—with the Black treatment adding visual exclusivity rather than a documented new engine tune.

What this comparison actually covers

“Defender Octa Black vs 90 V8” combines two different descriptions in Land Rover’s current range. The Defender 90 V8 page describes a specific 90-bodied vehicle with a supercharged petrol V8. The current models information lists Defender OCTA Black alongside the wider Defender range, but the reviewed material does not prove that OCTA Black is offered in the 90 body style or that both vehicles belong to the same model year in every market.

That distinction matters because a body style, engine version, wheel package and country-specific equipment list can all change the buying decision. Treat the figures below as manufacturer-published information, not as an independent back-to-back test. Land Rover also warns in its technical material that real-world results can differ from published specifications.

There are two layers to OCTA Black:

  • OCTA is the performance configuration. Its headline hardware includes a twin-turbo V8, 48V mild-hybrid assistance, 6D Dynamics air suspension and an OCTA-specific Integrated Power Brake.
  • Black is the appearance and trim treatment described in the reviewed material. It is associated with Narvik Black paint, gloss-black exterior details, specified wheel choices and a distinctive interior treatment. Nothing in the reviewed pages establishes that Black alone changes power, torque or acceleration.

Ask a retailer to identify the exact market, model year, body style, engine code and option list. A global brochure or a page for a different year is not enough to establish what you can actually register locally.

Powertrains: supercharged 90 V8 versus twin-turbo OCTA

What the Defender 90 V8 delivers

Land Rover’s current Defender 90 V8 page gives the 90 a 525 PS supercharged petrol V8 and 625 Nm. It quotes 0–100 km/h in 5.2 seconds, 0–60 mph in 4.9 seconds and a claimed top speed of 240 km/h (149 mph). Those are manufacturer figures associated with the page’s stated vehicle; they are not results from an independent road test.

A supercharger uses engine-driven assistance to force air into the engine. In practical terms, that description points to the 90 V8’s traditional, immediate V8 character, but the quoted figures do not tell you how either vehicle will feel on every road, in every temperature or with every wheel and tyre package.

What changes with OCTA

Land Rover describes OCTA as a twin-turbo V8 enhanced by a 48V mild-hybrid system. Current OCTA material advertises up to 635 PS and 0–100 km/h in 4.0 seconds. The current specifications information qualifies the P635 figures as manufacturer estimates that will be replaced by official EU test figures when available, and it states that maximum power varies by market.

That qualification is important. “Up to 635 PS” identifies the upper headline for a particular version or market; it does not prove that every OCTA Black sold worldwide has 635 PS. Ask for the local technical sheet and check whether it identifies P635, another output, or a different certification basis.

Why the acceleration numbers are not a clean laboratory comparison

The 90 page supplies both metric and imperial acceleration figures, while OCTA’s headline is expressed as 0–100 km/h. The tests may also relate to different model years, markets, tyres, equipment and certification procedures. A quoted 4.0 seconds versus 5.2 seconds indicates a substantial claimed difference on paper, but it is not an independent, same-day comparison.

PS means metric horsepower. Do not silently convert PS to another power unit and then treat the result as a new factory rating. Keep the market, version and test qualification beside every number when comparing dealer quotations.

Chassis, braking and off-road hardware

OCTA’s 6D Dynamics suspension

Land Rover says OCTA uses 6D Dynamics air suspension. The system is part of OCTA’s performance identity, alongside greater stated ground clearance and wheel articulation. Those features are intended to let the vehicle control body movement while preserving off-road wheel travel, but the reviewed material contains no independent measurement showing how it performs against a 90 V8 on a particular trail or surface.

The OCTA Integrated Power Brake

OCTA also receives an Integrated Power Brake described as OCTA-specific. Land Rover says the system helps reduce brake fade. That is a manufacturer claim about the hardware’s purpose, not proof of a particular stopping distance or repeated-track performance. Brake feel and fade resistance can still vary with temperature, load, tyre condition, pad wear and driving technique.

Wading and terrain systems

Land Rover quotes up to one metre of wading depth for OCTA. “Up to” is not permission to enter any one-metre crossing: water speed, hidden holes, current, entry angle, exit traction and the condition of the route all matter. Check the owner documentation and local guidance before attempting a crossing.

The Defender 90 page emphasizes the broader Defender capability set, including Terrain Response 2 and optional Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control. Those features address terrain selection and low-speed control, whereas OCTA’s published story adds specialized suspension, braking and articulation hardware. The two descriptions do not provide a complete, controlled comparison of approach angles, departure angles, axle loads or tyre performance.

What OCTA Black adds visually

Narvik Black and gloss-black details

The Black treatment is associated with Narvik Black paint and gloss-black exterior elements. This gives the vehicle a deliberately monochrome appearance, but black paint is also less forgiving of dust, water spotting and fine surface marks than a lighter colour. If appearance is a major reason for choosing it, ask the retailer which panels, badges, trim pieces and mirror details are actually finished in gloss black on the local build.

Wheels and tyres

The current models information lists 20-inch wheels for OCTA Black, while OCTA material describes optional 22-inch gloss-black wheels. Those statements are not a universal wheel-and-tyre prescription. Wheel diameter, tyre specification and the supplied spare or repair equipment can vary by market and option package.

Wheel choice affects more than appearance. A larger wheel can change sidewall height, ride response, tyre replacement cost and the amount of protection available on rocky ground. Before signing, obtain the exact wheel size, tyre brand and pattern, load rating, speed rating and whether the vehicle is delivered with a full-size spare, compact spare or repair kit.

Interior materials

The current models information lists Semi-Aniline leather and Kvadrat seats in the OCTA Black description. Confirm the precise seat construction, colour, heating and ventilation functions, electrical adjustment, child-seat compatibility and whether those materials are standard or optional in your country. A global page can combine equipment that is separated into packages locally.

Practicality: what is established and what is not

The 90 V8’s published packaging

Land Rover’s 90 page states seating for up to five passengers and an 11.3 m turning circle. Those figures make the 90 the easier vehicle to evaluate for a buyer who needs a documented compact Defender body and a known manoeuvrability number.

“Up to five” still requires a check of the exact seat configuration. Ask to sit in every occupied position, install the child seats you actually use and measure the cargo area with the second row in place. A specification-sheet passenger count does not tell you whether three adults fit comfortably across the rear bench or whether your equipment clears the load opening.

Why OCTA practicality cannot be inferred

The reviewed OCTA material does not provide a directly matched, same-market set of body dimensions, cargo volume, seating capacity or turning circle. Do not assume that an OCTA model has the 90’s dimensions, or that it is offered in the 90 body style, simply because both names appear on a current models page.

For a serious comparison, request the local figures for overall length and width, mirror-to-mirror width, wheelbase, turning circle, front and rear headroom, legroom, cargo volume, towing limit and roof load. If the retailer cannot provide a current sheet, treat the missing figure as unresolved rather than substituting a number from another market.

How to verify a local vehicle before ordering

  1. Identify the market and model year. Record the country where the vehicle will be registered, the production or model year and the exact grade shown on the retailer’s order form.
  2. Confirm the body style. Ask whether the advertised OCTA Black is a 90, 110, 130 or another configuration. Do not infer body style from photographs or the word “Defender” alone.
  3. Request the current technical specification. It should state engine output, torque, certification basis, acceleration, top speed, dimensions, seating, towing, roof load and wading guidance. The technical PDF reviewed for this comparison is titled Technical Specification 2025, so it should not be treated as proof of 2026 local availability.
  4. Check the powertrain line by line. For the 90, look for the 525 PS supercharged V8 and 625 Nm. For OCTA, check whether the sheet identifies a P635 output or another market-specific rating, and whether the acceleration figure is an estimate or an official test result.
  5. Separate standard equipment from options. Mark 20-inch wheels, optional 22-inch gloss-black wheels, Semi-Aniline leather, Kvadrat seats, 6D Dynamics and the Integrated Power Brake as standard, optional or unavailable for the quoted vehicle.
  6. Match the tyres to your use. Obtain the full tyre specification and ask how the chosen wheel package affects the spare, ride, replacement availability and off-road suitability.
  7. Test the practical fit. Bring passengers, child seats, luggage and any recovery or outdoor equipment you routinely carry. Check door openings, rear-seat access, load-floor height and parking clearance.
  8. Get written ownership terms. Request the local price, taxes, warranty duration and mileage limits, service intervals, roadside assistance, roadside-recovery exclusions and the treatment of off-road damage.
  9. Check inventory, not just configurator status. A model shown on a current global page may not be orderable in your country. Ask the retailer to confirm an actual allocation or a build slot.

Costs and ownership questions the published material does not answer

The reviewed official pages do not provide a consistent same-market comparison for purchase price, fuel consumption, insurance, service pricing, reliability, resale value or warranty coverage. It would be misleading to name a lower-cost winner without those local figures.

Ask for itemized estimates for the first three years and include the items that performance specifications can hide:

  • Fuel grade and estimated consumption under your normal driving pattern.
  • Routine servicing, fluids and inspection charges.
  • Replacement prices and availability for the selected tyre size.
  • Brake-pad and disc replacement intervals and prices.
  • Insurance rating, registration tax and any high-output or emissions surcharge.
  • Warranty treatment for suspension, air-suspension components, electronic systems and off-road use.
  • Roadside recovery limits, especially if you travel beyond paved roads.

Do not use the OCTA’s claimed one-metre wading ability as a reason to assume water damage is covered. Ask the retailer to point to the written warranty and exclusions.

How to read the manufacturer claims responsibly

Every headline number in this comparison comes from Land Rover’s published material. The 90 figures are listed on the current Defender 90 V8 page accessed in 2026. OCTA’s up-to-635-PS and 4.0-second statements come from current OCTA information, while the specifications page qualifies P635 figures as estimates pending official EU figures and notes market variation in maximum power.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That wording does not make the figures useless. It tells you how to use them: as a starting point for identifying a vehicle, then as items to verify on the local order sheet. It also prevents a common mistake—treating an estimated OCTA figure, a 90 V8 figure from another certification context and a Black-edition photograph as though they were measurements from one controlled comparison.

Bottom line: which Defender should you choose?

Choose the Defender 90 V8 if the documented 90 body, five-passenger layout, 11.3 m turning circle and supercharged 525 PS V8 are the combination you want, and your local dealer can confirm that specification. Choose OCTA if its twin-turbo mild-hybrid powertrain, claimed up-to-635-PS output, 4.0-second headline and specialized 6D Dynamics and braking hardware suit your priorities. Choose OCTA Black for the Narvik Black and gloss-black treatment only after confirming that the local vehicle includes the wheels, seats and other equipment shown in the listing.

There is no defensible universal winner from the published information because the sources do not establish a same-market, same-year, same-body comparison. Use the local specification sheet and a physical inspection to settle availability, equipment, practicality and ownership cost before placing an order.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
