Choose the Ferrari 296 GTS if your priority is a two-seat, mid-engine plug-in-hybrid sports car with Ferrari’s higher claimed output and quicker acceleration. The comparison uses the convertible DB12 Volante, not the fixed-roof DB12 Coupe, because the Ferrari model in the title is the open 296 GTS.
These are not direct rivals in layout or mission. The DB12 is designed around long-distance touring and nominal rear seats; the 296 GTS concentrates on hybrid-assisted performance for two occupants. The figures below are manufacturer specifications, not results from an independent back-to-back road test.

| Roof | Electrically operated fabric K-fold roof; 14 seconds to open and 16 seconds to close | Retractable hardtop; the cited technical sheet does not state an operating time |
The weight figures cannot be used as a simple apples-to-apples comparison. Aston Martin quotes an EU kerb weight, while Ferrari quotes dry weight; both descriptions include optional lightweight content in different ways. Ferrari’s acceleration number is also a 0–100km/h claim, so it should not be compared with a 0–62mph result without converting the units and accounting for test conditions.

The output figures use different naming conventions, too. Aston gives engine power in PS, while Ferrari gives combined hybrid output in both kilowatts and cv and specifies Qualify mode. Peak torque is measured at different engine speeds, so the 800Nm and 740Nm numbers describe the shape of each powertrain rather than proving which car feels stronger in every gear.

Different bodies, different reasons to buy
DB12 Volante: a 2+2 touring convertible
Aston Martin identifies the DB12 Volante as a 2+2. That gives it two front seats and a nominal rear bench, a configuration intended to add flexibility over a strict two-seater. The available specifications do not establish adult comfort in those rear seats, so treat them as occasional-use places rather than guaranteed full-size passenger accommodation.
The front-engine layout and conventional automatic transmission support the car’s grand-touring brief. It is the choice for someone who wants a V8 character, open-air cruising and the option of carrying more than one passenger when the rear space is suitable.
A 2+2 can also be useful even when the rear seats are rarely occupied. A child, a small adult on a short transfer or extra soft luggage can use the second row, while a strict two-seater requires every item to fit in its dedicated storage areas. That is a layout advantage, not a promise of limousine-like room. Check legroom, access and seat-belt geometry in the exact car you intend to order.

Ferrari describes the 296 GTS as an open-top, two-seat sports car. There is no rear passenger row, so the cabin is optimized for the driver and one passenger. The Ferrari technical sheet’s 49-litre “rear bench capacity” is not presented as a luggage-compartment measurement equivalent to the Aston’s 206- and 169-litre figures; it should not be turned into a direct storage comparison.
Its retractable hardtop and mid-engine sports-car architecture put performance ahead of the DB12’s extra nominal seating. If every trip is for one or two people and acceleration is the dominant criterion, the Ferrari’s format is the more coherent fit.
The difference is therefore philosophical as much as dimensional. The Aston can serve as a primary long-distance car for two people who occasionally need additional seats, whereas the Ferrari is configured around two occupants every time. Neither arrangement is inherently better; it depends on whether flexibility or a dedicated sports-car cockpit matters more in your routine.
Powertrains and transmissions
Aston Martin’s twin-turbo V8
The DB12 Volante uses a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 driving through an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. Aston Martin quotes 680PS at 6,000rpm and 800Nm from 2,750 to 6,000rpm, with an electronic differential managing the driven axle.
This is a conventional combustion powertrain: there is no published plug-in battery system or electric-only operating mode in the cited DB12 Volante specification. The broad torque band is relevant to touring because maximum torque is stated across a wide engine-speed range rather than at one narrow peak.
The ZF transmission is a torque-converter automatic rather than a dual-clutch unit. That description does not predict shift quality on its own, but it identifies the Aston’s traditional grand-tourer approach. The electronic differential is part of the driveline specification; the published information does not provide independent cornering or traction measurements, so those should be judged on a drive in the relevant road conditions.
Ferrari’s V6 plug-in hybrid
The 296 GTS combines a 120-degree turbocharged V6 with a plug-in-hybrid system and an eight-speed F1 dual-clutch transmission. Ferrari’s technical sheet lists a 7.45kWh battery and a combined 610kW, or 830cv, in Qualify mode. The same document gives 740Nm at 6,250rpm.

The 7.45kWh figure identifies the battery’s stated capacity, but it does not establish electric-only range, charging time, charging hardware, or how much power is available in every drive mode. Those details can vary by market and should be confirmed with the regional Ferrari representative. Do not assume a particular daily electric commute is possible solely because the car is described as plug-in hybrid.
Ferrari’s eight-speed F1 dual-clutch transmission and eSSC controls are distinct from the Aston’s ZF automatic. The specification confirms the transmission type and electronic control system, but it does not substitute for an independent assessment of low-speed smoothness, shift timing or track behavior.
Which is faster on the published figures?
Ferrari has the clear numerical advantage in the manufacturers’ claims. The 296 GTS is rated at 0–100km/h in 2.9 seconds, 0–200km/h in 7.6 seconds and above 330km/h. Aston Martin quotes 0–100km/h in 3.7 seconds and a 325km/h (202mph) maximum speed for the DB12 Volante.
That is a seven-tenths-of-a-second difference to 100km/h on paper, along with a higher stated top speed and an additional 0–200km/h claim for the Ferrari. These are factory figures, not independently measured results under identical tires, fuel loads, temperatures, surfaces and launch procedures. They establish the performance positioning, not a guaranteed result in every driving situation.
Ferrari’s 830cv is a combined system figure in Qualify mode, while the Aston’s 680PS is the quoted output of its V8. It would be misleading to treat those labels as if they were measured under one common dyno protocol. The useful conclusion is narrower: Ferrari publishes the larger combined output and the quicker acceleration claim, while Aston publishes a strong 680PS V8 specification with a wide torque plateau.

Roof systems and open-air use
DB12 Volante fabric roof
The Aston uses an electrically operated fabric K-fold roof. In Aston Martin’s 2023 announcement, the company states 14 seconds to open and 16 seconds to close. The roof incorporates insulation layers intended to support the car’s touring role, although the available specifications do not provide an independent noise measurement or a direct comparison with the Ferrari.
Amedeo Felisa, Aston Martin’s chief executive, said, “For many of our customers, roof down driving is the greatest pleasure.” That is a manufacturer statement about the intended experience, not an independent assessment. Aston’s chief technical officer Roberto Fedeli described the Volante as possessing the “Super Tourer” traits introduced with the DB12 Coupe; that is also the company’s positioning.
The published opening and closing times are useful when comparing ownership convenience: 14 seconds to open and 16 seconds to close is a clear factory claim. It still leaves practical questions for a test drive, including whether the cycle can be completed in the conditions you expect, how much luggage access changes with the roof lowered and whether the rearward view suits your seating position.
296 GTS retractable hardtop
The Ferrari has a retractable hardtop. The reviewed Ferrari technical sheet confirms the roof type but does not state an opening or closing time. Without a verified timing or controlled noise test, it is not accurate to declare the Ferrari’s roof faster, quieter or more refined than the Aston’s.
A hardtop and a fabric roof also describe construction, not a complete verdict on weather sealing, cabin noise or maintenance. Ask the dealer to demonstrate the full cycle, inspect the roof stowage area and drive on the type of roads you normally use. Those observations are more relevant to your purchase than assuming one roof material guarantees a particular experience.

Practicality: seats and luggage
The DB12 Volante is the practical choice only in a relative, specification-based sense. Its 2+2 cabin provides a second row that the Ferrari does not have, and Aston Martin publishes storage capacities that change with roof position: 206 litres roof-up and 169 litres roof-down.
Those figures matter if you plan weekend touring and want to use the space behind the front occupants. They do not prove that four adults will travel comfortably; no independent rear-seat assessment is supplied here.
The difference between 206 and 169 litres is 37 litres, so lowering the roof has a measurable effect on the Aston’s stated capacity. Plan around the smaller roof-down number if you normally drive open. Soft bags may use the available shape more efficiently than rigid cases, but the published figures do not specify luggage dimensions or allowable bag shapes.

The 296 GTS is a two-seater. Ferrari’s technical sheet reports 49 litres of “rear bench capacity,” but that wording is not an equivalent boot-volume rating, so it should not be used to claim that the Ferrari has more or less luggage room than the Aston. Check the actual luggage you intend to carry with a dealer and confirm the regional car’s storage configuration.
For a touring decision, bring your own overnight bags, camera cases or child equipment to the demonstration. Measure the items, try loading with the roof both raised and lowered on the Aston, and ask Ferrari to identify exactly what the 49-litre description refers to. This avoids converting a technical phrase into a practical promise.
Weight and chassis expectations
Aston Martin lists 1,898kg as the DB12 Volante’s EU kerb weight, including lightweight options. Ferrari lists 1,540kg as the 296 GTS’s dry weight with optional lightweight content. Kerb weight normally includes operating fluids and other equipment, while dry weight excludes some of those items; the definitions are different before options, fuel and market equipment are considered.
The numbers therefore indicate that Ferrari is pursuing a substantially lighter published configuration, but they do not quantify a controlled on-road advantage. Wheel sizes, tires, fuel load, battery state, optional carbon-fiber parts and regional equipment can all change the mass of an individual car.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
There is a stated 358kg difference between the two published numbers, but subtracting them does not produce a reliable real-world comparison because one is kerb mass and the other is dry mass. The Ferrari’s hybrid hardware and the Aston’s larger touring body also make simple power-to-weight calculations inappropriate unless the same weight standard and equipment level are used.
Price and ownership considerations
A directly comparable current price is not established for both cars. Edmunds lists a $269,000 US MSRP for a 2025 DB12 V8 Volante and frames its pricing data around Florida sales through 31 August 2026; the page was updated on 8 September 2026. That is a US, state-specific, model-year reference, not a universal global price.
No matching Ferrari 296 GTS MSRP or asking-price figure from an equivalent source is available here. Do not use the Aston figure to imply a price gap. Ferrari and Aston Martin pricing varies by country, tax treatment, model year, options, dealer allocation and customization. Obtain written local quotes for identically equipped cars.

- Insurance based on the exact driver, location, agreed value and security arrangements.
- Scheduled servicing, consumables, tires and brake components.
- Warranty terms and any requirements for servicing at an authorized facility.
- Real-world fuel use for the DB12 and fuel-plus-electricity use for the 296 GTS.

Which car suits which buyer?
Choose the DB12 Volante when touring flexibility leads
- You want a front-engine V8 rather than a plug-in-hybrid V6 system.
- A 2+2 layout is valuable, even though rear-seat comfort for adults is not independently confirmed.
- You want published luggage figures and the ability to retain 206 litres with the roof raised.
- Your open-top use is centered on relaxed, long-distance travel rather than the shortest acceleration time.
- You prefer a conventional eight-speed automatic transmission.
- You value a factory-stated 14-second roof-opening and 16-second closing cycle.
Choose the 296 GTS when performance architecture leads
- You need only two seats and want a dedicated sports-car cabin.
- The plug-in-hybrid system and 7.45kWh battery are central to your specification priorities.
- You value Ferrari’s higher published combined output of 830cv and its 2.9-second 0–100km/h claim.
- A retractable hardtop suits your requirements better than a fabric roof.
- You are prepared to verify electric operation, charging arrangements, options and local pricing separately.
- The published 0–200km/h time of 7.6 seconds and top speed above 330km/h matter more to you than extra seats.
A sensible evaluation and test-drive checklist
- Confirm the exact cars. Ask whether the Aston is the DB12 Volante and whether the Ferrari is the 296 GTS, not a coupe or a different model year.
- Record regional specifications. Verify engine output, emissions equipment, wheel and tire fitment, standard equipment and any market-specific restrictions in writing.
- Test the seating plan. Sit in the Aston’s rear bench with the front seats set for the intended driver and passenger. Treat the Ferrari as a strict two-seat car.
- Measure your luggage. Use the Aston’s roof-up and roof-down capacities as reference points, then place your own bags in both cars rather than relying on brochure terminology.
- Operate each roof. Time the full cycle yourself if that matters, and check operation with the vehicle stationary under the dealer’s permitted procedure. Ferrari’s cited sheet does not provide a factory timing.
- Ask for a written cost sheet. Separate base price, taxes, delivery, options, servicing, warranty and insurance; do not compare the Edmunds Florida reference with an unverified Ferrari number.
- Check hybrid requirements. For the 296 GTS, confirm charging equipment, electric-only operation, battery warranty and local support from the regional Ferrari representative.
- Drive in comparable conditions. If possible, evaluate both cars on the same roads and weather conditions, while treating any personal impressions as your own experience rather than a controlled performance test.
- Compare the modes you will actually use. Ferrari’s 830cv figure is specified in Qualify mode; ask how the car behaves in its normal road settings and what charging state is assumed. For the Aston, request the exact specification and tire fitment used for the 680PS claim.
Frequently asked questions
Is the DB12 Volante faster than the Ferrari 296 GTS?
No, not on the published manufacturer figures. Aston Martin quotes 0–100km/h in 3.7 seconds and a 325km/h top speed. Ferrari quotes 2.9 seconds to 100km/h and a top speed above 330km/h. Those are claimed figures under different manufacturer conditions, not independent head-to-head measurements.
Which car has more seats?
The DB12 Volante is identified as a 2+2 with a nominal rear bench. The 296 GTS is a two-seat sports car. The Aston therefore offers more seating flexibility, but the available specifications do not verify that its rear seats are comfortable for adults over long distances.
Does the Ferrari 296 GTS have a larger boot?
There is no sound basis for that conclusion from these specifications. Aston publishes 206 litres roof-up and 169 litres roof-down. Ferrari’s sheet lists 49 litres of “rear bench capacity,” which is not presented as an equivalent luggage-volume measurement.
How quickly does each roof operate?
Aston Martin states 14 seconds to open and 16 seconds to close the DB12 Volante’s fabric K-fold roof in its 2023 announcement. The Ferrari technical sheet confirms a retractable hardtop but does not state an operating time, so a direct timing comparison is unavailable.
Is the 296 GTS fully electric?
No. It combines a turbocharged 120-degree V6 with a plug-in-hybrid system. Ferrari lists a 7.45kWh battery and 830cv combined in Qualify mode. Electric-only range and charging details were not established in the cited specification, so verify those locally.
Why can’t the listed weights be compared directly?
Aston’s 1,898kg figure is an EU kerb weight including lightweight options. Ferrari’s 1,540kg figure is a dry weight with optional lightweight content. Kerb and dry measurements include different fluids and equipment, so the 358kg numerical gap is not a controlled real-world weight difference.
What does the DB12 Volante cost compared with the 296 GTS?
A directly comparable price is not established. Edmunds lists $269,000 US MSRP for a 2025 DB12 V8 Volante in a Florida pricing context through 31 August 2026. No equivalent Ferrari 296 GTS figure is available here. Request current local quotes with matching equipment, taxes and options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhich is better for long-distance touring?
On the specifications alone, the DB12 Volante is the more touring-oriented choice because it combines a 2+2 layout, published roof-dependent storage and a front-engine V8 grand-tourer brief. That is a layout inference, not an independent ride, noise or comfort verdict. The Ferrari is better aligned with a buyer who prioritizes two-seat hybrid performance.

Bottom line: choose the mission, not the badge
The DB12 Volante is the stronger specification match for a buyer seeking a V8-powered open-top grand tourer with nominal rear seating, a defined luggage compartment and a quick fabric-roof mechanism. The 296 GTS is the stronger match for a buyer seeking a two-seat plug-in-hybrid sports car and the higher manufacturer-claimed power, acceleration and top-speed figures.
Neither car wins every category because they were configured for different priorities. Decide first whether your regular trips require the Aston’s touring flexibility or whether the Ferrari’s hybrid performance architecture matters more, then validate local pricing, equipment and operating costs before signing an order.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy are the listed weights not directly comparable?
Aston quotes EU kerb weight; Ferrari quotes dry weight. The methods include different fluids and equipment, so the numerical difference is not a controlled mass comparison.
What is the price difference?
A matching comparison is unavailable. Edmunds lists $269,000 US MSRP for a 2025 DB12 V8 Volante in a Florida context; obtain current local Ferrari and Aston quotes before comparing.
Which is better for touring?
The DB12’s 2+2 layout and published storage make it the specification-based touring choice. The Ferrari is aimed at two-seat hybrid performance.
The Bottom Line
Choose the DB12 Volante for V8 grand-touring flexibility, nominal rear seats and published roof-dependent luggage capacity. Choose the 296 GTS for a two-seat plug-in-hybrid layout and Ferrari’s higher claimed output and acceleration. Confirm local prices, equipment, charging provisions and ownership costs before ordering.
