Rottnest Island
Ricciardo praised the island’s “beautiful white sand and clear water to swim.” Tourism Western Australia also includes a Rottnest day trip in its separate Perth tourism story; that coverage provides destination context, not evidence of Ricciardo’s preference.

Ningaloo Reef
Ricciardo singled out swimming with whale sharks, saying, “You have to go swimming with some whale sharks, even just saying that still spins me out.”

Shark Bay
He described an “amazing experience” with Darren “Capes” Capewell, whom the PerthNow article identifies as a descendant of the Nhanda and Malgana people. Ricciardo said he could not recommend the experience highly enough.

Optus Stadium
He acknowledged it was not a natural wonder, but said AFL there made him very happy. “I think it’s the best sporting venue in Australia,” he said—his personal opinion, not the result of a comparative stadium study. Tourism Western Australia also features Optus Stadium in its Perth tourism story.
The road trip behind the list
The five picks appeared in a 2023 account of a Tourism WA road trip Ricciardo took with friend Blake Mills. They set out from Perth and travelled north. The reported stops and activities included quad biking in Kalbarri; fishing and cooking on a cultural tour with Wula Guru Nyinda Eco Tours in Francois Peron National Park, Shark Bay; sleeping beside a campfire at Bullara Station; and swimming with whale sharks at Ningaloo Reef.

Ricciardo said both the landscapes and travelling with his friend made the trip memorable. He recalled, “I remember thinking that it’s something I’d love to do with or without a camera.” He also described sharing his backyard with the world alongside his best mate as “the icing on the cake.”

Ricciardo connected his choices to his affection for the state’s outdoors. “WA is home,” he told STM, and he said he loved being outside, whether that meant beaches, forest or farmland. He also described a road trip’s freedom as the chance to take an unplanned turn or detour.
