The “secret” in Paul Gover’s 2015 PerthNow profile is not a hidden personal crisis: it is the contrast between Daniel Ricciardo’s easy humor and the fierce competitiveness he brought to Formula 1. The profile connects his grounded outlook to his Perth upbringing and uses his Honey Badger emblem to capture the racer beneath the smile. That is the article’s portrait, not proof of what Ricciardo privately felt.
What the 2015 profile meant by “the secret”
Paul Gover’s PerthNow feature, published on 8 March 2015, appeared after Ricciardo’s breakout 2014 season. It presents a driver who could be warm and playful in public while remaining focused and confident about his ambitions. How the profile explains his grounded outlook
Gover describes Ricciardo as raised in Perth by his parents, Joe and Grace, and links his grounded manner to that upbringing and his attitude toward the racing career he had dreamed of. The profile portrays him as enjoying the opportunity while staying focused on the work and the competition. Those are the reporter’s characterizations, rather than direct proof of Ricciardo’s private psychology.
Humor in public, confidence on track
Ricciardo’s jokes give the profile its lighter side. Asked what had changed, he quipped: “What’s changed for me this year? Well, I’m better looking.” But the same piece records a serious assessment of his progress after 2014: “I think for me, personally, what’s good is that I proved to myself that I’ve got what it takes to make the next step. To be a contender for the world title.”

His account of how he would approach the next season was practical rather than theatrical: “My approach hasn’t really changed. My recipe worked last year, so it’s using that again.” Taken together, these remarks show humor alongside self-belief and consistency in the way the profile presents him; they do not establish a hidden explanation for his smile.
Why the Honey Badger fits the image
The Honey Badger emblem on Ricciardo’s helmet gave Gover a vivid way to describe the contrast. In the 2015 profile, Ricciardo describes the animal as appearing docile or friendly while being fearless and vicious. That is his metaphorical description in the article, not a zoological fact to generalize from.

In a later Formula 1 interview, Ricciardo described the Honey Badger as an alter ego associated with getting into the cockpit. The image helps explain how the nickname frames his competitive mode; it does not show that his public personality is false or that there is a single “real” self behind it. What has changed since the article was published
The profile recalls Ricciardo’s three Grand Prix wins in 2014 and his promotion from Toro Rosso to Red Bull after Mark Webber retired from Formula 1. Its discussion of the 2015 Australian Grand Prix and that season’s prospects belongs to that moment, not to his current career status.

Formula 1’s 2026 retrospective says Ricciardo’s F1 career ended after the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix and records eight career victories. It also reports that he later said he was grateful Red Bull made the decision to end his stint as an F1 driver. That later perspective should not be read back into what he said in the 2015 profile.
