To build one for events, choose a period design and a club first, then follow that club’s current rules for dimensions, engine, brakes and safety equipment. There is no single worldwide cyclekart specification.
What is a cyclekart?
Cyclekarts are compact vehicles that recreate the look of early racing cars, either by interpreting a particular historic model or by using period styling more generally. Building and sharing the vehicles is central to the activity; an event called a “race” may not resemble a conventional wheel-to-wheel motorsport series.
The Cyclekart Club of Australia handbook, version 1.2, puts the emphasis this way: “Cyclekarting is first and foremost about community, and the art of the CycleKart. It’s about bringing people together to share and enjoy a common journey of CycleKart construction.” The actual event format and eligibility are set by each organizer.
Choose the club and rules before choosing parts
Rules differ by organization and location, even where the basic dimensions and engine choices look similar. Before settling on a design or purchasing an engine, wheels or brakes, check the current handbook and event requirements for the club where you intend to participate.

| Rule set | Engine and power | Dimensions and wheels | Braking and safety |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cyclekarts GB (United Kingdom) | Describes a 6.5 hp Honda GX200 or clone, or a specified electric alternative; its power menu allows up to 212 cc and a maximum 10 hp. These are club specifications, not a universal cyclekart rule. The page is an extract and directs builders to the current handbook for definitive requirements. | Maximum wheel track 1000 mm; wheelbase about 1675 mm typically and normally under 1800 mm; 17-inch wire-spoke wheels. | Rear driven-axle braking is described. Consult the current handbook and event rules for full safety and inspection requirements. |
| Cyclekart Club of Australia (Australia) | Its guidelines give broadly similar engine and power constraints to the UK guidance; consult the club framework for the exact applicable specification. | Its guidance gives broadly similar track, wheelbase and wheel constraints, including a 1000 mm maximum track and approximately 1675 mm typical wheelbase. | The club points builders to its wider safety framework and dedicated construction and safety resources. |
| Cyclekart Germany (Germany) | Its rules dated 7 September 2026 define a stock class for GX200 or clone engines up to 212 cc and a tuning class capped at 196 cc. | Class-specific requirements apply; do not assume UK or Australian dimensions or specifications govern German events. | Requires bilateral rear braking and lists additional event safety provisions, including an effective brake system, visible brake light, accessible kill switch, extinguisher and integral helmet. |
These figures describe the named clubs’ guidance, not a global standard. The UK page itself is an extract; for the UK, use Cyclekarts GB’s current handbook as the technical authority. For Australia and Germany, confirm the current documents and event inspection requirements with the relevant club.
How to plan a build
- Pick a period inspiration. Decide whether your bodywork will evoke a general era or follow a particular historic car. This establishes the shape and proportions you will need to reconcile with the rulebook.
- Choose your intended club or event. Eligibility is local. A design that fits one club’s rules may not qualify elsewhere.
- Read the current rules before fixing dimensions. Check track, wheelbase, wheel and tire envelope, engine displacement, tuning or power limits, brakes and safety equipment. Resolve any unclear point with the organizer before fabrication.
- Buy components only after checking fit and eligibility. A Honda GX200 or clone is a common engine choice in the cited club rules, but local limits control displacement and permitted tuning. Check that wheels, tires, brake parts and safety equipment suit both the design and event requirements.
- Plan construction around inspection and safe operation. Cyclekarts GB describes the build as achievable and offers workshop and build guidance; its handbook supplies the technical definition and rules. Treat brakes, shutdown access and visibility as design requirements from the start, rather than additions after the vehicle is assembled.
Engine choices and limits
The Honda GX200 and clones appear in UK, Australian and German club materials, which makes “Honda GX200 engine” a useful starting search when sourcing parts. It is not a universal requirement: Cyclekarts GB also describes a specified electric alternative, and each organization controls what is allowed.

- [Direct Replacement for Light-Duty Engines] 3/4" shaft (19mm) × 2.43" length │ 3/16" keyway │5/16"-24 UNF thread. Standard mounting pattern fits go-karts, cultivators, water pumps, pressure washers and more. Easy replacement for most 7HP engines.
- [Reliable Recoil Start, No Battery Needed] Recoil starter designed for consistent starting. Simple pull-start operation eliminates battery dependency—ideal for remote or off-grid environments.
- [Efficient 7HP Performance] 212cc OHV engine delivers stable 7HP output with 8.85 ft.-lb torque @2500 RPM. Durable internal structure with cast iron cylinder sleeve and forged crankshaft ensures long lifespan and reduced maintenance.
- [High-Efficiency & Easy to Maintain] 0.95-gallon supply tank supports daily operation needs. OHV design enhances combustion efficiency and simplifies maintenance. Supply shut-off valve enhances safety during transport and storage.
- [US-Support] Provides a 2-year limited service plan and lifetime technical support from a U.S.-based team. Unit is factory tested (minor oil residue may exist). Oil required before first use.
Do not treat an engine’s advertised rating or tuning potential as permission to use that output at an event. For example, Cyclekarts GB’s guidance lists a maximum 10 hp and up to 212 cc, while Cyclekart Germany separates a stock class of up to 212 cc from a tuning class capped at 196 cc. Those limits belong to those respective rule sets; check the current local wording before buying or modifying an engine.
Safety, inspection and event participation
Design braking, engine shutdown, visibility and protective equipment into the vehicle early. Cyclekart Germany’s rules specifically list an effective brake system, visible brake light, accessible kill switch, extinguisher and integral helmet, in addition to bilateral rear braking. Those are German club requirements, not a universal list. UK and Australian builders should use their own current handbooks and event rules; the Australian club also publishes dedicated construction and safety resources.

- All enignes EPA compliant are functionally tested before leaving the factory to guarantee quality; Backed by 1-year limited warranty under normal use and FREE lifetime technical guidance from experts
Ask the organizer how its events work and what will be inspected. Australia’s handbook cautions that “racing” and “sport” can suggest a degree of conventional competitive motorsport that does not match its club’s emphasis on community and construction. Other organizers may use different formats.

Build cost depends on the design, fabrication skills, parts sourcing and local requirements. Cyclekart Germany’s rules dated 7 September 2026 recommend that the budget not exceed €2500; that is a recommendation from that club, not a verified typical total cost or a universal spending limit.
