Some Cybertruck owners posted photos and accounts in August 2024 describing tailgates that looked bent or warped after carrying cargo. Those reports raise a reasonable question, but they do not establish how often deformation occurs or prove that ordinary use caused any particular case. Tesla’s published guidance covers vehicle payload, cargo securing and tailgate positions; the sources reviewed do not give a maximum load for the tailgate panel itself.
What the reported tailgate deformation does—and does not—show
Owner posts describe apparent deformation after loads were carried, using phrases such as “tailgate warped after doing truck stuff.” They are individual accounts, not controlled tests. The posts do not provide consistent load measurements or a denominator that would show how many Cybertrucks are affected. They therefore cannot establish a fleet-wide defect, its prevalence or a single cause.
The available material also does not determine whether a reported case resulted from design, load placement, cargo movement, misuse or some combination. Tesla has not provided a tailgate-panel load rating in the official guidance reviewed here, so the reports cannot be checked against a published tailgate-specific limit.
What Tesla says about loading the Cybertruck
Tesla’s Cybertruck Owner’s Manual, under Vehicle Loading, directs owners to use the vehicle’s loading label and account for occupants as well as cargo. It defines the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and gross axle weight ratings (GAWR), and warns: “To prevent damage, never load Cybertruck so that it is heavier than GVWR or exceeds the individual GAWR weights.”

The manual gives 954 lb as vehicle capacity weight in one worked example configuration with assumed passenger weights. That is an example of total vehicle capacity—not a tailgate rating and not a universal payload figure. Owners should use the loading label for their own vehicle rather than apply that example to every Cybertruck.
How cargo securing and tailgate positions fit in
Secure cargo using the available bed anchors
Tesla’s cargo-bed guidance describes bed tie-down points and, when equipped, L-track rails that accept standard fittings. Securing a load is part of careful cargo handling because shifting cargo can change where force is applied. The guidance does not say that a particular tie-down, rail or accessory prevents tailgate deformation.

Use the positions Tesla documents, but do not infer a weight limit
Tesla’s Cybertruck DIY instructions describe setting the tailgate flat or partially open to carry oversized items such as bicycles or long planks. The instructions recommend two people when adjusting the support cables. They explain positioning, not how much weight the tailgate can bear.

Tesla’s Cybertruck Tailgate Ramp listing states a 750 lb load limit for the ramp. That rating applies to the ramp, not the tailgate panel, and cannot be used to infer the panel’s capacity. At the time reflected in the listing reviewed, the product was shown as out of stock and required Tesla vehicle-owner eligibility; availability may change.

Tesla also lists a Cybertruck Tailgate Utility Track with load stops. The listing is for a cargo-management accessory, not a repair or proof of a tailgate load rating. Neither accessory establishes that a deformed tailgate will be fixed by using it.

What owners can do when carrying cargo
- Check the loading label on the specific truck and include occupants and cargo in the vehicle-capacity calculation.
- Stay within the vehicle’s GVWR and each axle’s GAWR; do not treat payload guidance as a rating for the tailgate panel.
- Secure cargo using the available bed anchors and follow Tesla’s instructions for the intended tailgate position.
- For a ramp or other accessory, follow that product’s own rating and fitment information. A ramp rating does not transfer to the tailgate.
- If a tailgate appears bent or warped, document its condition and the load and loading arrangement involved, then contact Tesla service for an assessment rather than assuming the posts identify the cause.
