Reports of Cybertruck trim coming loose at highway speed point to a specific part: the cantrail, a stainless-steel exterior trim panel. Tesla recalled certain 2024 and 2025 Cybertrucks because the panel may separate at its adhesive joint. The recall does not establish that the truck’s entire body—or every exterior panel—is coming off.
Did a Cybertruck panel fly off on the highway?
Some drivers have reported trim coming loose, but the documented safety issue is narrower than the headline-style descriptions suggest. In recall 25V-170, Tesla says the cantrail panel may delaminate from its adhesive joint and separate from the vehicle. NHTSA warned that a detached panel could become a road hazard and increase crash risk. The official records establish the recall condition; they do not independently verify each driver account or establish how many panels actually detached.
Tesla reported 151 warranty claims that may be related to the condition as of March 14, 2025. The company estimated that 1% of the 46,096 potentially involved vehicles had the defect; that is an estimate, not a count of confirmed failures. Tesla reported no related collisions, fatalities, or injuries known to it as of March 14, 2025. NHTSA’s recall acknowledgement, dated March 19, 2025, states: “A detached panel can become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.”
Which Cybertruck panels are covered by the recall?
The affected part is the cantrail, also called the cant rail: a stainless-steel trim panel along the vehicle. Tesla’s filing describes the original assembly as a stainless-steel panel joined with structural adhesive to an electrocoated steel stamping. The issue is possible delamination at that adhesive joint—not a general defect affecting every body panel.

Tesla says cabin noise or visible loosening may indicate that a cantrail is separating. A panel that detaches in motion could endanger following traffic.
Which Cybertrucks are included?
Recall 25V-170 covers certain model year 2024 and 2025 Cybertrucks manufactured from November 13, 2023, through February 27, 2025. The recall population is 46,096 vehicles, according to Tesla and NHTSA. A model year or build date alone does not confirm that an individual vehicle is affected; check its VIN using Tesla’s recall lookup or NHTSA’s campaign information.

What should an owner do?
- Check the VIN. Use Tesla’s or NHTSA’s recall lookup to see whether the vehicle is included and whether the campaign remains open for it.
- Arrange Tesla’s recall repair. Tesla says it will replace the cantrail assembly at no charge. Its owner support page estimates about one hour for the work and says owners can continue driving while Tesla contacts them to schedule service when parts become available in their region. Check the current recall page for vehicle-specific status.
- Contact Tesla if you notice a warning sign. Cabin noise or visible loosening can indicate separation. Tesla customer service is listed at 1-877-798-3752; NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline is 888-327-4236.
The remedy assembly changes the attachment design: Tesla’s filing says it uses a different structural adhesive, plus a stud welded to the stainless panel and a nut that clamps the panel to the vehicle structure. The documented remedy is Tesla’s free recall replacement; an aftermarket part should not be treated as a substitute.

- January 7, 2025: Tesla learned of a field complaint; it began an engineering study on January 13.
- January 31: Tesla learned of another partial-delamination case. An inspection and pull test on February 6 detected no separation.
- February 21: NHTSA notified Tesla of an owner questionnaire alleging detachment. Tesla reviewed that questionnaire, social-media complaints, and service records through March 7.
- March 11: Tesla decided to issue a voluntary recall. It submitted its Part 573 report on March 18, 2025.
