A reported August 2024 break-in in Atlanta showed a person damaging a Cybertruck’s driver-side window, climbing inside and taking a backpack. The video did not show anyone peeling away a stainless-steel body panel. The owner reportedly said no alarm or phone notification arrived, but the available reporting does not establish why.
What the Atlanta video showed
On August 28, 2024, reporting by The Drive described Cybertruck owner Anuj Thakker sharing footage of a person approaching his truck, damaging the driver-side window, entering through the opening and taking a backpack. Carscoops reported the incident the following day, also describing the footage and the owner’s account that he received no alarm or app alert.
“Peel” is therefore misleading if it suggests the person removed a stainless-steel body panel. The accounts describe a damaged side window. This was a report based on owner-shared footage and a social post, not a forensic investigation or a controlled test of Cybertruck security.
Did the Cybertruck alarm or Sentry Mode alert the owner?
The owner was reported as saying no alarm sounded and no phone notification arrived. That is an account of this incident, not proof that the alarm or Sentry Mode will behave the same way in other break-ins. The available sources do not include vehicle logs or an independent diagnosis, so they cannot establish why no notification arrived.

Tesla’s Cybertruck Owner’s Manual treats the security alarm and Sentry Mode as separate features, with different triggers and outputs:

Does Sentry Mode record every break-in?
No. Tesla describes Sentry Mode as threat-detection and recording functionality, not a guarantee that every intrusion will be detected or captured. Recording requires an installed, properly formatted USB drive. The manual describes formatting the drive in the vehicle or on a computer. Without a USB drive, the vehicle may notify the app about a detected security event, but it does not make camera recordings.
A USB drive can preserve footage when the system records an event; it does not prevent entry or guarantee an alert. Detection, notification and recording are distinct outcomes: Sentry Mode must be enabled, the system must classify an event as a threat for the relevant response, and a properly formatted drive must be present for camera recordings.

Practical settings and limits for owners
Tesla says owners are responsible for confirming that windows are closed and should not rely on notifications to tell them. The manual documents a “Close Windows on Lock” setting and notifications when the car is left open. These are useful checks, not a barrier against forced entry.
For occupants, the manual says powered interior door buttons open the doors. If low-voltage power is unavailable, it describes manual releases: a front release near the window switches and a rear mechanical cable accessed through the rear door’s map pocket. Tesla cautions that using manual releases while power is available can damage windows or trim. These are owner-safety procedures, not a security feature.
