In a December 2020 report, New Atlas described a removable camper box called the Scout and a hauling trailer called the Tough. The design’s appeal is a more substantial sleeping and storage setup than a basic bikepacking shelter; its trade-off is towing a sizable load. The report documents the concept and specifications at that time, not current availability or a tested riding comparison.
How the Scout camper and Tough trailer work together
The Scout is the camper module, while the Tough is the separate bicycle trailer that carries it. The module can be removed, leaving the Tough available for other hauling tasks. New Atlas reported that the trailer used a hydraulic overrun brake and connected to the bicycle with a lockable Weber coupling.
Those details do not establish compatibility with a particular bicycle, axle, hitch, or braking system. A rider would need to confirm the requirements for their own bike and trailer configuration rather than assume that the coupling or brake setup fits.
How the Scout unfolds at camp
The shell folds upward and structural sections swing into place to create a wedge-shaped shelter. The rear hatch becomes an entry awning, supported by telescoping poles. New Atlas said setup took a few minutes; that was a description in the 2020 report, not an independently timed test.

An optional annex tent adds waterproof canvas panels around the opening. The report also describes configuring panels as awning extensions, giving the shelter an open arrangement as well as a more enclosed one. The annex is an add-on, not an item established as included with the camper.
Scout Center size, weight, bed, and storage
New Atlas relayed the following historical product figures for the mid-size Scout Center in 2020. They are not independently verified current specifications.

The reported storage arrangement has three areas: space below the bed for smaller supplies such as food, water, and cooking gear; a larger compartment between the bed and closed top; and the externally accessible 30-liter hatch for items such as snacks, rain gear, and bottles.
Center, Compact, and the two-person option
The Center is presented as a single-adult bed. New Atlas also described a narrower Compact configuration that fits between the trailer wheels and has a 60 cm-wide bed. The report gave the Compact a weight of 6.8 kg. Its figures, like the Center’s, are historical claims relayed in 2020.

For two people, the report describes an optional annex tent with room for a second person sleeping on a cot. It also mentioned a larger Comfort model as planned; the 2020 article does not establish that this model subsequently launched.
Accessories and historical prices
New Atlas named an annex tent, PVC tent floor, roof crossbars, folding table, cot, solar panel kit, and collapsible storage crates as accessories. The report does not establish which, if any, are currently offered or included in a package.

The Scout concept prioritizes a built-up shelter and dedicated storage carried in a trailer, rather than keeping camping gear to what fits on the bicycle. That may suit a rider who values the extra room and the ability to remove the module and use the trailer for other loads. In exchange, the Scout/Tough arrangement is a substantial towable package: the 2020 report put the Center combination at 47 kg before accounting for any additional cargo.

The New Atlas feature does not provide a controlled comparison with a conventional bikepacking tent, a riding test, an estimate of range impact, or an independent safety assessment. It therefore cannot show that towing the Scout is faster, safer, more comfortable, or more efficient than carrying a lightweight shelter. Its value depends on a rider’s priorities and on confirming that their bicycle and intended route are suitable for a trailer of this kind.
