Motor1 reported in June 2025 that Toyota engineers told Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport a larger turbocharger could make the developing G20E 2.0-liter turbo four exceed 600 hp. A separate report put the engine’s prospective output at up to 395 hp, underscoring how far the conditional figure is from an established road-car specification.
What Toyota’s reported 600-hp claim means
The engine at issue is a developing 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, reported as the G20E and previewed in Toyota’s GR Yaris M concept. The figure above 600 hp was reported by Motor1 on June 27, 2025, citing Toyota engineers speaking with Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport. The stated condition was fitting a larger turbocharger.
That makes the number a conditional potential, not an announced output for a production engine or car. The report does not identify a named engineer as the speaker, and the underlying Auto Motor und Sport interview is not available here for direct verification. The claim should therefore be treated as secondary reporting rather than a confirmed Toyota specification.
How the 600-hp figure compares with the reported 395 hp
In a later, separate report, Car and Driver said on November 1, 2025, that Toyota powertrain chief Takashi Uehara described the developing GR 2.0-liter as capable of up to 395 hp and said it would fit in the GR Corolla. These figures describe different claims, not two confirmed production versions.

The 600-plus figure therefore signals a reported engineering possibility under a hardware change, while 395 hp is the more grounded prospective figure reported for the GR engine. Neither is a final road-car rating.
What Toyota has and has not confirmed
Toyota’s 2025 Integrated Report discusses new 1.5-liter inline-four engines in naturally aspirated and turbocharged forms. It says the turbocharged 1.5-liter could cover the role of a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine used in towing applications. Those details concern a separate engine family; they do not verify the G20E’s 600-hp potential.

The available reporting does not confirm a production launch for the G20E, its final vehicle application, or its eventual road-car output. The GR Corolla fitment reported by Car and Driver is not itself confirmation that the engine will enter production in that model.

In the same Car and Driver report, Toyota chief technology officer Hiroki Nakajima said, “Toyota should be a company that makes ICE to the very end,” and, “I love motorsports, and I love the smell of gasoline.” Those comments provide context for Toyota’s interest in continuing internal-combustion development, but they do not establish the G20E’s specifications or production future.
