The main difference is seating: the 2026 Mazda CX-70 is a two-row SUV for up to five people, while the CX-90 adds a third row and seats up to eight in Turbo configurations. Choose the CX-90 if you regularly need that extra row; choose the CX-70 if you do not and prefer its two-row layout. Seating: decide whether you need the third row
CX-70: up to five passengers
The CX-70 has two rows, with no third-row option. It fits buyers who need seating for up to five and do not regularly carry more passengers.
CX-90: up to eight in Turbo models, up to seven in PHEV models
The CX-90 adds a third row. Mazda lists capacity for up to eight in Turbo configurations and up to seven in its 2026 PHEV lineup. Check the seating configuration of the specific trim you are considering rather than assuming every CX-90 seats the same number. Cargo space: compare the seats you will actually use
With the CX-70’s second row in place, Mazda lists 39.6 cu. ft. of cargo space and 75.3 cu. ft. maximum. The CX-90 has 40.0 cu. ft. behind its second row and 74.2 cu. ft. maximum, but keeping its third row available leaves 14.9 cu. ft. behind it. Those figures show why maximum volume alone is not the whole family-cargo story: consider how much room remains when the seats you need are occupied. Price: compare trims and equipment, not just entry prices
Mazda’s 2026 pages list the CX-70 Turbo from $42,750 and the CX-90 Turbo from $39,300. These are starting MSRPs, before taxes, title, license and destination charges; dealer pricing and available offers vary. The CX-70’s listed Turbo range runs from $42,750 for the 3.3 Turbo Preferred to $56,870 for the 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus. The lower CX-90 starting price is not a like-for-like trim comparison, so compare the equipment and powertrain on the actual vehicles you are considering. PHEVs have separate pricing. Powertrains: Turbo or plug-in hybrid
3.3-liter Turbo inline-six
Both model lines offer 3.3-liter inline-six Turbo variants. For the 2026 CX-70, Mazda lists 280 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque for the Turbo on regular fuel, with EPA-estimated fuel economy of 24 mpg city, 28 highway and 25 combined. The CX-70 Turbo S is rated at 340 hp and 369 lb-ft on recommended premium fuel, with EPA estimates of 23 mpg city, 28 highway and 25 combined. These are Mazda-published ratings and estimates, not independent test results. Trim availability and ratings differ, so match the specific CX-90 trim and powertrain before comparing figures. Plug-in hybrid (PHEV)
Mazda offers a PHEV in both model lines. Its 2026 comparison lists 61 combined MPGe for the CX-70 PHEV and 56 combined MPGe for the CX-90 PHEV. Mazda lists 32 miles of electric range for the CX-70 PHEV; its CX-90 announcement gives up to 26 miles for the CX-90 PHEV. These are manufacturer figures, not guarantees of real-world electric range or efficiency. Mazda’s CX-90 announcement also lists 323 hp and 369 lb-ft for that PHEV with recommended 91-octane fuel, and a 17.8-kWh battery. Towing: check the exact powertrain and equipment
Mazda lists up to 5,000 lb. of towing for the CX-70 with Mazda Genuine Towing Accessories; its towing mode requires the Mazda Genuine Tow Hitch. The CX-90 announcement lists up to 5,000 lb. for equipped Turbo models and up to 3,500 lb. for the PHEV. Treat these as configuration-specific maximums, not a rating that applies to every trim or powertrain. Confirm the vehicle’s equipment and towing requirements with Mazda or a dealer. Which Mazda should you choose?
- Choose the CX-90 if you regularly need a third row. Check the specific trim’s seating configuration and whether its 14.9 cu. ft. behind the third row suits the luggage you carry with all seats in use.
- Choose the CX-70 if you do not need a third row and want a two-row layout for up to five. Its listed cargo volume is 39.6 cu. ft. behind row two and 75.3 cu. ft. maximum.
- Compare actual trims if price, power or equipment is the deciding factor. Starting MSRPs differ, and the entry prices do not represent equivalent trims.
- Compare PHEVs on your use if electric driving matters. Mazda’s range and MPGe figures are published estimates; your results will depend on conditions and use.
- Verify towing configuration if you plan to tow. The maximum depends on powertrain and equipment.
