Concorde itself is not returning to passenger service. It was retired in 2003. A different possibility is a new generation of supersonic aircraft, including Boom Supersonic’s proposed Overture—but plans, airline purchase pledges and proposed rule changes are not the same as a certified aircraft carrying scheduled passengers.
Is Concorde coming back?
No evidence reviewed establishes a return of Concorde, the specific aircraft. The Associated Press describes it as the only supersonic commercial airliner ever to fly. It entered passenger service in 1976 and was retired in 2003; 20 aircraft were built, of which 14 were used for passenger service. Associated Press history of Concorde
“Supersonic travel returning” is a broader question: a new aircraft might one day carry passengers faster than sound, but it would not be Concorde. Boom Supersonic is developing Overture for that role. The available information does not establish that Overture is certified, operating passenger flights or ready to launch a scheduled service.
What is happening with new supersonic passenger aircraft?
Boom Overture: a proposed commercial aircraft
Boom is developing Overture as a future supersonic airliner. In a January 29, 2025 report, the Associated Press said American Airlines and United Airlines had pledged to buy Boom aircraft and that Boom reported 130 orders and pre-orders. That combined figure is dated company-reported activity, not a delivery guarantee, completed aircraft certification or proof that passengers can book flights. Route flexibility is a key question. The AP report noted that if strong sonic booms remain a problem, flights could be limited to ocean crossings or an aircraft might need to slow down over land. The reported airline pledges do not establish which routes would be permitted or commercially viable.
NASA X-59: research, not an airliner
NASA’s X-59 is a research aircraft in the Quesst mission, not a passenger plane or a replacement Concorde. NASA intends to use it to study public reaction to quieter sonic “thumps” and provide information to regulators considering acceptable noise thresholds for commercial supersonic flight over land. NASA’s Quesst mission
The X-59’s purpose is to gather evidence about noise, not to demonstrate that every future supersonic aircraft will be quiet enough to fly anywhere. Results from research and public-response work are distinct from rules being finalized and from certification of a particular aircraft.

Can supersonic passenger planes fly over land in the United States?
Not under a general permission currently in effect. The U.S. Department of Transportation describes current regulations as prohibiting civil aircraft from flying faster than Mach 1 over U.S. land, subject to operation-specific authorization. The FAA has proposed replacing that general prohibition with an interim noise-based certification standard; the proposal is not itself an effective blanket permission for overland passenger flights. FAA supersonic noise rulemaking overview
On June 30, 2026, the FAA said its proposed rule would set a noise-based certification standard and that it planned a separate proposal addressing takeoff and landing noise. Its July 9, 2026 overview says one proposal concerns preventing harmful sonic booms from reaching the ground, while the other would establish acceptable takeoff, landing and cruise noise thresholds. The agency said it aimed to finalize both rules by mid-2027. That is a target, not a completed rulemaking or a guarantee that the schedule will be met. FAA rulemaking overview and updates
Even a final rule would not, by itself, put a passenger service in the air. An aircraft would still need to meet applicable certification requirements, and international coordination and operational permissions would remain relevant. The FAA says it is working with ICAO, NASA, industry and academic institutions on the issue.

What “Mach cutoff” can—and cannot—do
The FAA describes Mach cutoff as a phenomenon in which aircraft design, speed, altitude and atmospheric conditions can cause a sonic boom to bend or refract back into the atmosphere, reducing its impact at the ground. It is one possible technique for limiting ground effects, not proof that sonic booms can be eliminated in every condition or that any aircraft will satisfy a future standard. Concorde’s speed came with limits. Sonic-boom restrictions constrained many overland routes, and the aircraft faced difficult economics rather than becoming a mass-market service. The Associated Press also reports that a fatal Air France crash in 2000 accelerated Concorde’s decline; it was one factor, not the sole cause of retirement. Associated Press history of Concorde

- Aircraft readiness: Is a complete aircraft built, tested and certified for passenger operations?
- Noise: Can it meet standards for sonic booms at cruise and noise around airports?
- Usable routes: Can it fly supersonically over land, or would it have to slow down or restrict flights to routes over water?
- Operating economics: Can airlines operate it sustainably, including the costs of fuel and other operations?
- Passenger demand: Are enough travelers willing to pay fares that support the service?
The information available establishes these as hurdles, not their eventual solutions. It does not establish a fare, route network or definitive business case for Overture or another proposed successor.
When could supersonic passenger flights return?
There is no established launch date for a new supersonic passenger service. The FAA’s mid-2027 target concerns finalizing proposed U.S. rules, not the date an aircraft will be certified or begin carrying paying passengers. The available information also does not establish Overture’s commercial certification outcome, initial routes or ticket prices.
For a service to launch, aircraft development and certification, noise requirements, route permissions and an airline’s operating plans would all have to align. Regulatory change could remove one obstacle without settling the others.
