Robotiz3d’s ARRES project is aimed at preventing some potholes, not making them disappear. Its road-scanning system identifies defects, while a prototype vehicle called ARRES Prevent is designed to seal small cracks before they grow. A reported live trial in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, shows the prototype was tested on public roads; it does not establish long-term effectiveness or widespread deployment.
What is Robotiz3d’s ARRES road-maintenance system?
ARRES is a family of road-maintenance technologies developed by Robotiz3d, a University of Liverpool spin-out. The University of Liverpool says the company spun out in 2020 after research at the university’s School of Engineering. The product names refer to different jobs, not three versions of one already-deployed robot.
| System | Intended role | Status and evidence |
|---|---|---|
| ARRES Eye | Scan roads and provide classified, geolocated defect data for maintenance planning. Robotiz3d says it can be fitted to existing vehicles. | The company presents it as a road-condition data product. Its capabilities are vendor statements, not an independent performance assessment. Robotiz3d: ARRES Eye |
| ARRES Prevent | Patrol roads and seal small cracks before they develop into larger defects. | A crack-sealing prototype. The company describes it as battery-powered and operable autonomously or by remote control. Robotiz3d: ARRES Prevent |
| ARRES Ultra | Prepare, fill and compact road damage, including potholes. | Robotiz3d labels it “Currently in development”; it should not be treated as a deployed or commercially available repair vehicle. Robotiz3d: ARRES Ultra |
How could the pothole-prevention robot work?
Potholes can form as cracks widen under water, frost and repeated traffic. ARRES Prevent’s proposed approach is to find and seal smaller cracks earlier, reducing the opportunity for them to develop into larger breaks in the road surface. ARRES Eye provides the scanning and defect-prioritisation role; Prevent is the prototype intended to carry out crack sealing.
Robotiz3d describes Prevent as roughly the size of a small van and says it can patrol without a driver or be remotely controlled. Those are company descriptions of the prototype, not independently verified specifications or proof of performance at scale. The approach is preventive: it is distinct from ARRES Ultra’s planned process for preparing and repairing larger damage.

Did the Hertfordshire pothole-robot trial work?
New Atlas reported that ARRES Prevent completed its first live trial on public roads in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, in March 2024. A Local Government Association case study dated January 28, 2025, describes a pilot involving Hertfordshire County Council, Robotiz3d and University of Liverpool academics, focused on identifying and repairing cracks that become potholes. Together, these accounts establish that a prototype was trialled; they do not establish sustained durability, network-wide results or potholes eliminated. New Atlas, March 25, 2024; Local Government Association, January 28, 2025.
At the time of the New Atlas report, then UK Technology and Decarbonisation Minister Anthony Browne said the technology had “the potential to transform how we perform road maintenance”. That is a statement about potential, not a finding that the system has already improved road maintenance.

Is the ARRES robot available yet?
The available product information describes a mix of a data offering, a prototype and a system still in development. Robotiz3d markets ARRES Eye as road-condition intelligence for highway owners and contractors; ARRES Prevent remains a prototype, and the current ARRES Ultra page says it is in development. This is a public-infrastructure and business-to-business context, not a consumer robot for private motorists to buy. The University of Liverpool’s project profile also describes Eye as a launched commercial product and Prevent as a prototype; product status may change, so check the company’s current pages for updates. Earlier detection and crack sealing could help highway authorities address some defects before they become potholes. Robotiz3d says its ARRES solutions may reduce maintenance time, cost, emissions and material waste, but the available sources do not provide comparative results or a method that independently verifies those benefits. Nor do they show that autonomous machines can replace conventional road crews across a whole network.

The University of Liverpool profile reports that UK pothole repairs cost £1 billion “for the last decade alone” and that more than 18 million potholes were filled. Those are figures from the university’s profile, which does not identify a separate primary dataset or define the calendar-year boundaries; they should not be read as independently verified government statistics. The same profile says Robotiz3d raised £1.25 million in a 2022 funding round, a company-funding figure rather than a measure of road-repair costs. University of Liverpool: Robotiz3d.
