If you specifically want a small electric SUV, the Kia EV3, Volvo EX30 and Chevrolet Equinox EV are the clearest alternatives documented for current shopping—although they serve different markets, sizes and use cases. The right choice depends on local availability, actual trim equipment, charging access, rear-seat needs and the test-cycle range figures published in your market.
First, correct the IONIQ 3 premise
Hyundai Motor’s April 20, 2026 introduction describes the IONIQ 3 as “a fully electric compact hatchback designed to make electric mobility intuitive, comfortable and relevant for everyday European needs.” Hyundai calls its shape an “Aero Hatch,” not a compact SUV. That distinction matters when you are comparing seating position, cargo height, rear-opening dimensions and exterior footprint.

The announcement is Europe-focused. It does not establish US availability, pricing, range, charging specifications or a global launch schedule. Treat the IONIQ 3 as a European electric hatchback that some shoppers may cross-shop against small SUVs, rather than assuming it is a direct replacement for an SUV in every country.
The three alternatives below are useful starting points, not a complete worldwide market list. The Kia and Chevrolet information is US-oriented, while the Hyundai announcement is Europe-oriented and Volvo’s cited specifications are for the US 2026 model year. Confirm that a vehicle, trim and feature package are actually sold in your country before making a purchase decision.

Kia EV3: the most direct small-SUV substitute
Why it belongs on the shortlist
Kia introduced the all-new 2027 EV3 in the United States at the New York International Auto Show in April 2026 and later announced US pricing on August 12, 2026. Kia presents it as an attainable small all-electric SUV, so its body style aligns more closely with an SUV shopper’s expectations than the IONIQ 3 hatchback does.
What the announcements do—and do not—tell you
The US debut and pricing announcements establish that the EV3 is a named 2027 model for the American market, but they do not by themselves guarantee stock at every dealer or define the equipment of every trim. Before comparing a quoted price with another vehicle, ask for the exact trim, destination charges, incentives, delivery estimate and included charging hardware.
- Check whether the trim you want is orderable in your state or region.
- Confirm the vehicle’s published range test cycle; a figure from one regulator or market cannot be compared casually with a different cycle.
- Verify DC charging power, the connector used in your market and whether a cable or home-charging accessory is included.
- Read the trim sheet for driver-assistance features instead of assuming that an option shown in launch material is standard.
Who should prioritize it
Put the EV3 first when you want an explicitly small SUV, are shopping in the US, and can wait for local inventory or a confirmed allocation. It is less suitable as a decision made solely from the headline price because delivery timing, trim content and regional incentives can change the effective cost.
Volvo EX30: the clearly documented small footprint
Published size and charging figure
Volvo Cars USA lists the 2026 EX30 at 166.7 inches long. That gives shoppers a concrete reference for garage fit and urban maneuverability, although length alone does not predict rear-seat comfort, turning circle or cargo volume.
Volvo also publishes a fast-charge time of 26.5 minutes from 10% to 80%. This is a manufacturer figure, not a guaranteed trip result. Volvo says actual charging time varies with temperature, charging equipment, battery condition and vehicle condition. A cold battery, a busy or power-limited station, or a car that cannot accept the station’s maximum output can all make a stop longer.
How to use the EX30 data correctly
Use the 166.7-inch length when checking a parking space or comparing the EX30 with another vehicle’s published dimensions. Use the 26.5-minute number as a best-case planning reference under the stated 10–80% window, not as the duration of every public-charge visit. The time from 80% to full is normally slower on many EVs, so road-trip planning should not assume that adding the last 20% takes the same time as the first 70%.

Questions to ask at the dealer
- Which drivetrain and battery configuration is attached to the quoted vehicle?
- What range does that exact configuration achieve on the applicable local test cycle?
- Is the advertised charging figure tied to a specific battery, power level or software state?
- Which driver-assistance and convenience functions are included in the selected trim?
The EX30 is a strong candidate for buyers who value a documented small exterior footprint and want an official, clearly qualified DC-charging reference. Its suitability for a family depends on the rear-seat and cargo measurements of the exact configuration, which should be inspected in person.
Chevrolet Equinox EV: a larger compact-SUV option
Why it may be a better fit than the smallest alternatives
Chevrolet positions the Equinox EV as a compact electric SUV. It may be larger than the smallest vehicles in this comparison, so do not treat the “compact” label as proof that it will fit the same garage, parking space or urban routine as the EX30 or EV3. Compare actual exterior dimensions, turning space, seat width and cargo opening before choosing it for a tight location.
Driver assistance requires a trim check
Chevrolet’s model page lists adaptive cruise control and shows Super Cruise as available. The page also uses previous-model-year imagery in places. That means you should identify the precise model year and window sticker before describing a feature as standard or assuming that the pictured interior is the one you will receive.
- Ask whether adaptive cruise control is standard on the selected trim or part of a package.
- Confirm the availability, subscription or activation terms, and operating restrictions for Super Cruise where you live.
- Check the exact model-year cargo, wheel, battery and charging specifications.
- Compare the vehicle’s width and length with your parking space, not just its marketing class.
Who should consider it
The Equinox EV makes more sense when rear-seat room, luggage capacity or a more conventional compact-SUV layout matter more than choosing the shortest possible vehicle. It is a poor match if you need a confirmed small footprint but have not yet measured your garage or parking bay.

How to compare these vehicles without making a false winner
No standardized, same-market independent test of all four candidates is established by the available official material. Do not declare a universal winner from the headline specifications alone. Build a comparison using the following sequence.
1. Confirm market, model year and delivery
Start with the country where you will register the vehicle. Record the model year, trim, battery and drivetrain on the written quote. Then ask whether the vehicle is physically in stock, allocated for delivery or only available to order. The EV3’s US introduction and pricing announcements do not prove that every trim is immediately available, and the IONIQ 3 announcement does not establish US availability.
2. Compare the complete purchase price
Use the local drive-away or out-the-door figure, not a headline price copied from another market. Include destination charges, taxes, registration, dealer-installed equipment, financing costs and any incentive whose eligibility you have confirmed. A lower advertised price can disappear if the vehicle is unavailable, requires an expensive package or does not qualify for the same local benefit.

3. Match body style to daily use
Decide whether you actually need an SUV body. A hatchback can be easier to park and may have a lower step-in height or different cargo loading behavior, while an SUV can provide a taller seating position and a more upright cargo area. Sit in the rear seat behind your normal driving position, open the hatch with your garage door closed and test the child-seat or bicycle equipment you actually use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Put range figures on the same test-cycle basis
Write down the regulator or test cycle beside every range number. Do not compare a European test-cycle result with a US result as though they were laboratory equivalents. Ask whether the figure applies to the exact wheel, drivetrain and battery combination being offered. Temperature, speed, payload, terrain and cabin heating can reduce usable road-trip range, so leave a practical buffer instead of planning to arrive at a charger with an empty battery.
5. Examine the charging curve, not just a maximum rate
A peak DC power number describes a short point in the session. The more useful questions are how quickly the vehicle reaches that peak, how long it holds high power and how the curve behaves above 80%. Volvo’s 26.5-minute EX30 figure is explicitly a 10–80% manufacturer estimate with conditions that affect the outcome. Ask each seller for the charging window and conditions behind its published figure.
6. Verify connectors and home compatibility
Identify the vehicle’s AC and DC connector standards in your market and check that your intended public networks support them. For home charging, verify the charger’s connector, power rating, circuit requirements, electrical-panel capacity and installation location. A charger purchase is not universal equipment: the right choice depends on the vehicle, local electrical rules and the property’s wiring.
7. Compare warranty and assistance documents
Warranty length, battery-capacity coverage, roadside assistance and corrosion terms vary by manufacturer and market. Obtain the written warranty booklet for the exact country and model year. Do not infer coverage from a review, a salesperson’s summary or a warranty offered in another region.
8. Separate standard safety equipment from paid options
Make a trim-by-trim checklist for adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assistance, blind-spot alerts, parking sensors, cameras and hands-free highway assistance. Chevrolet’s page shows adaptive cruise control and Super Cruise availability, but the exact model-year and trim configuration still needs confirmation. Apply the same discipline to every candidate.

Home charging
Most owners should decide where the car will charge before signing. A licensed electrician can assess the panel, cable route, outdoor protection, load management and permit requirements. Apartment residents may need landlord or building approval and a metered solution. Ask the installer to verify the charger’s continuous current against the vehicle’s onboard AC limit; a higher-rated unit does not make a car charge faster than the car allows.

Public DC charging
For long trips, map compatible stations along the route and check payment, access and reliability in the areas you use. Leave a reserve for weather, detours and a busy or inoperative stall. A manufacturer’s charging time assumes suitable equipment and a battery in appropriate condition; it does not promise that every station will deliver the same result.
Cold-weather planning
Low temperatures can reduce energy efficiency and charging performance. If the vehicle supports battery preconditioning, learn how it is activated and whether navigation to a DC station triggers it. On a winter trip, start with a fuller battery, allow extra time and avoid treating a warm-weather range or charging estimate as a guarantee.

Decision paths for different buyers
Choose the EV3 path when SUV shape and small dimensions are the priority
Begin with the EV3 if you are in the US, want a purpose-described small electric SUV and can verify a local 2027 allocation. Make the final choice only after comparing the exact trim’s price, range, connector, charging equipment and safety content.
Choose the EX30 path when a documented short length matters
Begin with the EX30 if the 166.7-inch length is useful for your parking space and you value a manufacturer-published 10–80% charging reference. Validate rear-seat and cargo usability in person and treat the 26.5-minute figure as conditional.
Choose the Equinox EV path when space outweighs minimum footprint
Begin with the Equinox EV if you need a more conventional compact-SUV package and can accommodate a potentially larger vehicle. Confirm dimensions, model year and the actual cost of driver-assistance options before comparing it with smaller candidates.
Choose the IONIQ 3 path only where Hyundai confirms availability
Consider the IONIQ 3 where Hyundai has announced a local launch and you prefer a compact electric hatchback. Do not buy it on the assumption that it is an SUV or that European announcement details automatically apply to another market.

- Verify AC and DC connectors, maximum charging power and included cables.
- Have a qualified electrician assess your proposed home-charging location.
- Read the warranty, battery coverage and roadside-assistance terms for your market.
- Confirm which driver-assistance functions are standard, optional, subscription-based or unavailable.
- Get a delivery date in writing and ask what happens if the vehicle or selected trim is delayed.
Common comparison mistakes
- Calling the IONIQ 3 an SUV: Hyundai introduced it as a compact hatchback with an Aero Hatch concept.
- Assuming a launch equals immediate stock: the EV3’s US announcements still require a local inventory and delivery check.
- Using “compact” as a dimension: the Equinox EV may be larger than the smallest options; measure the actual vehicle.
- Treating a charging estimate as a promise: temperature, equipment and battery condition change the result.
- Comparing range numbers from different cycles: keep the test-cycle label beside every figure.
- Assuming pictured equipment is standard: model-year imagery and trim content can differ, especially on the Equinox EV page.
- Buying a charger before checking the property: connector compatibility and electrical capacity must be established first.
Verdict
For a small electric SUV, the Kia EV3 is the most direct conceptual alternative to Hyundai’s IONIQ 3, while the Volvo EX30 offers the clearest documented small footprint and a qualified charging reference. The Chevrolet Equinox EV is worth considering when you need more conventional compact-SUV space and can accept a potentially larger vehicle. The IONIQ 3 itself should be evaluated as a Europe-focused electric hatchback unless Hyundai confirms a different body style and market plan for your country. Compare exact local trims, test-cycle figures, charging hardware, warranty terms and delivery timing before choosing.
