When inspecting a used Tata Tiago in India, check the car in front of you rather than assuming every model has the same faults. The strongest documented checks here concern 2016–2018 diesel examples: dashboard rattles, braking condition, timing-belt warning signs and persistent white exhaust smoke. Other useful checks—such as clutch or AMT behavior, suspension noise, air-conditioning and electronics—depend on the car’s year, engine and variant, and should be treated as inspection prompts, not proven fleet-wide defects.

Dashboard and trim rattles
Drive over a rough but safe stretch with the windows closed and listen for rattles from the dashboard and cabin trim. A sound is a reason to locate the source; it does not by itself identify a failed part. Ask whether the trim has been repaired or removed, and have persistent or worsening noises checked before agreeing a price.

On a safe road, note whether the brake pedal feels consistent and the car slows predictably. Check the brake-fluid level and look for visible leakage or signs of pad wear, but do not treat a seller’s visual check as a substitute for inspection if the pedal feels abnormal, braking is weak, or the car pulls to one side. Autocar reported complaints involving fluid leaks and early pad wear in the diesel cars covered.

Timing-belt warning signs
Ask for service invoices and clarify when timing-belt work was done. Difficult starting or ticking from the engine was identified by Autocar as a possible timing-belt warning sign; neither symptom confirms the cause. Have a mechanic inspect the belt and engine condition rather than authorizing a repair based on the sound alone.
Autocar’s 2018 article advised considering replacement after 50,000 km for the used diesels it covered. That is dated editorial guidance, not a universal current interval for every Tiago. Check the manual for the exact model and engine, and compare it with the car’s service history. The article’s quoted replacement cost of Rs 2,000 was also a 2018 figure, not a current estimate.

Persistent white smoke from a diesel
Watch the exhaust after starting and once the engine is warm. Persistent white smoke merits diagnosis; ask about fuel quality and previous injector or engine work. Autocar associated some cases with poor-quality or adulterated fuel and warned of possible injector, performance and efficiency consequences. Smoke can have other causes, so a mechanic should determine what is happening on the specific car.

A secondary used-car guide suggests these additional checks. Its claims do not establish defect rates, so use the symptoms as prompts and base your decision on the individual vehicle’s condition and a qualified inspection. The guide’s reported frequency claims and repair prices are not a sound basis for estimating what a repair should cost.

Manual clutch
With a manual Tiago, check whether the pedal feels unusually heavy, whether the car judders as it moves off, and how it behaves on a gentle incline. If any behavior is abnormal, ask a mechanic to assess the clutch rather than assuming wear is the only possible cause.
AMT operation
In a safe area, test starts, upshifts, hill starts and reverse engagement. An automated manual transmission may not feel like a conventional automatic; judge the car for severe, inconsistent or concerning judder and have that behavior diagnosed. Test the system cold and after a normal drive if the seller permits.

Suspension and steering-area noises
Listen for clunks from the front over bumps at low speed. Ask an inspector to check suspension mounts and links if a noise is repeatable, and to distinguish a mechanical issue from loose trim or other cabin noise.
Infotainment and electrical equipment
Operate the screen, Bluetooth, parking sensors, lights, windows and locks more than once. The secondary guide mentions lag and connectivity concerns on some 2020–2022 systems, but that claim is not independently confirmed here; verify the equipment fitted to the particular variant and confirm that it works reliably during your inspection.

Air-conditioning
Check cooling while the car is stationary and while moving. If cooling is weak or inconsistent, ask a technician to investigate; a symptom alone does not identify which component, if any, needs repair.
Paint, rust and previous repairs
Inspect lower body edges, wheel arches, the boot area and accessible underbody surfaces for rust, bubbling paint or signs of repair. Compare panels for mismatched paint or uneven gaps, then ask about accident and bodywork history. A secondary guide alleges paint and corrosion concerns, but the meaningful evidence for a particular Tiago is its visible condition and repair documentation.
Warning lights and diagnostic scan
If the check-engine light is on or the engine runs unevenly, request an OBD-II scan and have a mechanic interpret the codes alongside a physical inspection. A code reader can be a useful convenience, but a stored code does not prove which part has failed, and a scan does not replace diagnosis. The secondary guide particularly suggests a scan for suspected misfire concerns in pre-2020 petrol cars.
How to make the inspection specific to the car
- Identify the exact version. Record the model year, fuel type, engine, variant and transmission. Do not transfer the 2016–2018 diesel observations directly to a petrol, factory CNG or later AMT car.
- Check the matching manual and service history. Compare the odometer, dated invoices, recorded engine work and scheduled maintenance with the manual for that vehicle. The Tiago owner’s manual PDF hosted by Team-BHP is one reference, but confirm that its edition matches the car. The cited manual includes routine checks such as fluids, tyres, lights and wipers; use authorized service for work beyond owner-level checks.
- Test and document symptoms. Take a normal test drive, operate the equipment fitted to the car, and note when a noise or warning appears. Ask the seller for supporting invoices rather than relying only on a verbal maintenance history.
- Get an independent mechanical inspection. Ask the mechanic to investigate abnormal braking, engine noises, exhaust smoke, transmission behavior or warning lights and provide an estimate based on current local parts and labor costs.
- Check the vehicle’s VIN for campaigns. Ask Tata Motors or the relevant Indian vehicle authority to check the actual VIN and provide written confirmation before purchase. A general online search cannot establish whether a campaign applies to this individual car.
- Reassess the asking price. Use the inspection findings and current local repair quotes to decide whether to proceed or negotiate. Historical prices in old articles are not current quotes.
How to weigh the findings
Separate observed defects from inspection prompts. A repeatable fault confirmed by a mechanic, a documented repair, or a missing service item tied to the exact manual is stronger evidence than a general online claim about a model or year. Compare candidate cars by their condition, maintenance records, mileage, fuel type and transmission—not by assuming that one listed symptom affects most Tiagos. No population-level defect rate or statistically representative reliability study is established by the sources cited here.
