Choose the Celerio if your priorities are lower fuel use, a roomier rear cabin and a more comfortable ride; choose the Tiago if you prefer the compared car’s cabin presentation, equipment and more engaging handling. For a used car, though, neither model wins automatically: the exact year, variant, fuel and transmission, condition, documented history and asking price matter more than a model-level comparison.
What the comparison can—and cannot—tell you
Autocar India’s instrumented comparison, published on 22 September 2022, compared a then-new second-generation Maruti Suzuki Celerio with a Tata Tiago facelift. Its results are useful for understanding the models’ broad trade-offs, but they do not establish which individual used car is the better buy. The cars you are considering may differ in year, trim, equipment, age and condition.

Use the comparison as a shortlist guide, then judge the actual listings side by side. A well-maintained car with a fair local price can be a better purchase than the model that looks stronger on paper.
How the two compared cars differ
The figures and review judgments below are from Autocar India’s 2022 comparison, not guarantees for every model year, trim or used example. The publication’s fuel-economy figures came from its instrumented test; actual consumption will vary with the car and how it is driven.

When the Celerio is the better fit
The 2022 test favors the Celerio for fuel economy, boot capacity and ride comfort. That makes it a sensible starting point if you often drive in town, carry luggage or passengers, or value a softer ride. The figures do not predict the economy of a particular used car; ask about its service history and assess it in the kind of driving you do.

When the Tiago is the better fit
The compared Tiago had the edge for cabin presentation, equipment and driver engagement. It may suit you better if those qualities matter more than the Celerio’s test-economy advantage. Confirm that the specific used variant actually has the features you want rather than assuming equipment carries across every year and trim.
Compare the actual used-car listings before deciding
Assess both candidates using the same criteria. Local listings and inspection results are essential: the available comparison does not establish representative used prices, maintenance costs, a reliability ranking or model-year-specific fault rates.

- Match year and variant. Record the model year and exact trim for each car. Check that listed features and specifications belong to that version.
- Confirm fuel type and transmission. Establish whether each candidate is petrol or, for the Celerio, S-CNG, and whether it has a manual or automated gear-shift transmission. Compare cars suited to your needs rather than assuming the model name identifies the powertrain.
- Compare asking prices locally. Look at comparable cars in your area with similar years, trims, fuel types, transmissions and condition. Do not treat a new-car price as a used-car valuation.
- Check condition and records independently. Have a qualified, independent inspector assess the car’s mechanical and body condition. Review available service and repair records, and reconcile them with the vehicle’s condition and the seller’s account.
- Test the car for your usual use. Drive on roads like the ones you normally use, and assess comfort, visibility, controls and the transmission. If fuel consumption is a deciding factor, do not assume Autocar India’s test result will be reproduced by your used car.
- Check the exact safety equipment. Verify the airbags and other equipment on the car itself, then identify whether a published crash-test result applies to that specific version.
How to read the crash-test information
Global NCAP’s report published on 22 January 2020 awarded the tested two-airbag Tata Tigor/Tiago four stars for adult occupant protection and three stars for child occupant protection. Global NCAP said it tested the Tigor because the Tiago and Tigor share the front and passenger compartment. The report also noted limitations involving the tested car’s structure, footwell and some aspects of occupant protection. Treat this as a result for the tested version, not a blanket safety rating for every Tiago year or variant.
Global NCAP’s results index, accessed on 4 October 2026, lists separate 2025 Celerio tests for six-airbag and two-airbag versions. Those entries are not interchangeable with the 2016 no-airbag Celerio entry or with other older cars. Confirm the year and airbag equipment of the used car before drawing any conclusion from a test result; a result for one version does not certify every example.

New Celerio prices are context, not used-car values
As accessed on 4 October 2026, Maruti Suzuki’s official Celerio page listed petrol and S-CNG variants, with starting prices ranging from ₹4,69,900 for the LXi manual to ₹6,75,400 for the ZXi+ AGS. The page states that prices prevailing at invoice apply. These are new-car reference prices, not a guide to what a used Celerio should cost. No corresponding current official Tiago price source is established here, so the figures should not be used as a direct new-car price comparison.

For the model-level trade-off, start with the Celerio if fuel economy in Autocar India’s test, cabin and boot space, and a softer ride are your priorities. Start with the Tiago if you value the compared car’s cabin presentation, equipment and more engaging handling. Then choose between the actual listings on documented history, independently checked condition, exact equipment and a price that makes sense against local comparable cars. The better used hatchback is the better individual car for your needs—not automatically the model that led one comparison.
