The problems reported by Toyota Tundra owners vary by model year, production period, and configuration. Reports and service-bulletin notices can point to symptoms worth investigating, but they do not prove that a particular truck has a defect or show how often it occurs. Toyota has issued safety recalls for certain newer Tundras, including an engine recall affecting selected 2022–2023 trucks and a transmission-control update for certain 2022–2024 Tundra and Tundra Hybrid vehicles. Check any truck’s VIN for campaign eligibility and completion before buying or driving it.
What owner reports can—and can’t—tell you
Owner complaint databases collect reports submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). They are useful for spotting concerns people have raised, but a complaint is not a verified failure, and a count is not a per-truck failure rate. Reports may be incomplete or unconfirmed; older model years and trucks with higher sales have had more time and opportunity to accumulate them.
RoadVitals’ captured dataset lists 6,884 NHTSA owner-reported Tundra complaints and mentions body or structure, engine, brakes, suspension, and powertrain among the components. Its model-year counts include 428 reports for 2022, 400 for 2023, 334 for 2024, and 130 for 2025. These are raw counts shown by that publisher, not reliability scores or evidence that one year is more failure-prone than another. The page’s own caveats explain the limits of interpreting them: RoadVitals’ Tundra complaint summary.
Official recalls affecting certain newer Tundras
A recall is different from an owner complaint: it is a manufacturer campaign for vehicles that meet specific eligibility criteria. The model-year range alone does not establish that an individual truck is covered. Confirm applicability and whether the remedy has been completed using the VIN.

Engine machining debris: certain 2022–2023 trucks
Toyota’s May 30, 2024 notice covered certain 2022–2023 Tundras built from early November 2021 through mid-February 2023. Toyota said machining debris might remain in the engine after production, potentially causing knocking, rough running, a no-start condition, or loss of motive power. The notice stated that dealers would replace the engine assembly free of charge for covered vehicles; remedy availability was to be phased by production period. Toyota’s initial notice described the concern and the later remedy notice gives the repair details: Toyota Safety Recall 24TA07 notice filed with NHTSA and Toyota remedy notice.
This campaign does not mean every 2022 or 2023 Tundra has the condition. Toyota’s notice listed approximately 98,600 vehicles covered by the campaign; that is a campaign population, not a count of confirmed engine failures.

Transmission may not fully disengage in Neutral: certain 2022–2024 trucks
Toyota’s February 21, 2024 notice addressed certain 2022–2024 Tundra and Tundra Hybrid vehicles. Under the described condition, transmission parts might not immediately disengage after the driver shifted into Neutral, allowing the truck to creep at low speed on a flat surface when the brake was not applied. Toyota stated that dealers would update the transmission-control software free of charge. See Toyota’s recall announcement for the campaign details.
Other campaigns require a current VIN check
Toyota announced another recall involving certain 2022–2025 Tundra trucks in May 2025. The available announcement information here does not establish that campaign’s defect or remedy, so do not infer either from the model-year range. Use Toyota’s or NHTSA’s VIN lookup for the current campaign details and to determine whether a specific truck is included. Recall eligibility and remedy completion are vehicle-specific.

Service-bulletin notices describe narrower concerns
Technical service bulletins (TSBs) communicate repair or diagnostic information for particular conditions and vehicle configurations. A bulletin is not a recall, does not prove that a vehicle has the described problem, and does not mean the issue affects every truck in a model year.
A secondary index of notices for the 2022 Tundra includes examples such as hesitation from a complete or rolling stop, a loud pop or clunk beneath the truck on the first start after an extended rest, possible water entry associated with a disconnected HVAC drain hose, and notices involving diagnostic trouble codes. Some listed notices refer to vehicles from more than one model year, and each has limited applicability. See CarComplaints’ 2022 Tundra TSB index; ask a Toyota dealer to check the actual bulletin and its applicability for the truck’s year and configuration.

How to check a used Tundra before purchase
- Identify the truck precisely. Record its model year, production details if available, and whether it is gasoline-powered or a Tundra Hybrid. Campaigns and service information may apply only to specified years, production periods, or configurations.
- Check the VIN with Toyota or NHTSA. Look for open safety recalls and campaign eligibility. Do not rely on a seller’s model-year description or a generic list of affected years to determine coverage.
- Confirm completed remedies. Ask a Toyota dealer whether an applicable recall repair or software update has been performed, and request service documentation. For the engine campaign, verify whether the covered vehicle’s free engine replacement has been completed.
- Review maintenance and repair records. Look for documented work related to the truck’s reported symptoms and ask when the work occurred. Missing records do not prove a fault, but they leave important history unconfirmed.
- Arrange a model-specific inspection. Have a qualified mechanic assess the truck and investigate any symptoms in its actual configuration. If it has warning lights, a diagnostic-code reader may retrieve codes for further investigation, but a code alone does not identify the failed part or replace a required recall remedy.
How to interpret symptoms and reports
Match a concern to the truck rather than treating all Tundras as interchangeable. The useful comparison is the exact model year and, where relevant, production period and gasoline or hybrid configuration. Then establish whether a recall applies to that VIN, whether its remedy is complete, and whether the symptom matches a bulletin for that specific vehicle. Raw complaint totals cannot rank model years reliably because vehicle age and sales volume affect how many reports accumulate.
